Let Down by HoT because...
pretty much… especially after realizing I need to be level 80 to use it now.
Research is your friend. Why would you make an assumption that you could use a greatsword on the profession. The information has been out there forever. You should probably do a bit of reading before buying a game.
That said, I know some people who use the warhorn on the ele and think it’s great fun.
IMO, you get 5 skills with necro’s GS, but 8 skills with ele warhorn. Warhorn skills are awesome. Tempest with warhorn is now one of the best professions to play. Ele with GS or hammer sounds pretty silly. you can expect him to get sword in the future. If ele were to get 2-handed weapon, it would mean ArenaNet would have to create 20 weapon skills for him. Plus, imagine the uproar if one profession got 20 new skills and other profession got just 5 or 6… people would be angry.
I didn’t really keep up with GW2 since a few months after launch. I came back a few days ago because I saw the xpac trailer, very late, and was excited at the thought of getting to use new weapons on certain classes.
Mostly being excited about using a Greatsword or Greathammer on my elementalist! I thought it would be so cool to wield fire and ice with a big kitten sword! Hot kitten !
I didn’t realize, though, with the expansion you only get to unlock a predetermined extra weapon for each subclass or specialization whatever they are calling it.
And Ele’s is a warhorn… a horn? Necro’s got the kitten giant sword, and I get a horn. Needless to say I am pretty freakin disappointed. I’m sure they made it clear to people who follow the game that there were still restrictions.
But from a pure outsider view it made it seem like all weapons were finally open to all classes.
:(
ele’s also got tempest, we got storms and shouts, all pretty cool stuff, we have 7 weapons, plus we can summon 3 weapons (including a fiery greatsword) and a shield. That’s a lot, considering you can combine them for different skill sets
If every class had every weapon you would start to use the flavour of each profession, its nice to have an alt that does something different imo.

but would also result in a product that might not satisfy anyone”- Roman Pichler, Strategize
I honestly wouldn’t care if the tempest’s new weapon was a pair of fuzzy pink bunny slippers so long as it was a mainhand weapon. As an offhand weapon, all it does is compete (largely unsuccessfully) against the support abilities we already have which are majorly found on our offhand weapons.
They basically made 7/10ths of a support spec.

A pure outsider would have no set expectations for what weapons were open to what classes though. Furthermore, even the littlest amount of research on HoT would have resulted in you figuring this out on your own. HoT isn’t the let down here.

How did they do this? Do you have any quotes where they implied all weapons would be made available to all classes in HoT?
Well…if you take a “lore” perspective Elementalist is a wizard. Wizards use staffs or wands (the scepter). The offhand is a supplement e.g. the focus. Giving the Elementalist double dagger is pretty odd from a lore perspective. I think the war horn is in response for the desire for a “battle mage”.

Spellcasters, including elementaliss, in Tyrian lore, have always been able to use swords prior to GW2.
The archetypical fantasy wizard, Gandalf, carried a sword.
