Oh boy this is going to be fun. XD forum > game

I don’t know why you’re so obsessed about what’s wrong with the Silverwastes. This is about how HoT should’ve been, not about how to solve the leeching and boss-hopping in Silverwastes.

LOL you brought it up, I merely pointed out the flaws.

I brought up what I said I brought up, not what you think I brought up. Read the thread from the start, all posts, every last word. Don’t obsess over a single phrase taken out of context.

Nothing has been taken out context silly goose. You wanted wanted silverwaste maps with paticipation reqs ( which ironically is what the hot maps are). When pointed out its flaws its suddenly “out of context” – 2 broken systems doesn’t make 1 working system mate.

No need to beat around the bush mate, just come out and state " I wanted more mindless farm maps with low particpation requirments".

OK, I’ll come out. I have never farmed anything, ever. I detest zerg play and I don’t do it more than I need to achieve things I want to achieve. I haven’t done a world boss in weeks.

Silverwatse is a mindless zerg map soo….. " Do you smell it?…. that smell, that kind of smelly smelly smell…..that kind of smelly smell that smells semlly?"

Unless there is overwhelming voices like that for the full price expac with no bonus slot or the reskinned t3 human, they won’t pay any mind.

They are paying mind. Colin J. has announced accessibility changes to the HoT maps/metas coming with the spring update.

yes we’ve NEVER EVER have heard that before…..big on talk and little on action

At the end of the day silverwaste map is still open…..

Yeah, I know. Nice for the people who like to play there. I’ve been done with it for many months.

Indeed it is espically for the players that want silverwaste-like maps…..

But of course …..in fact the very moment I pointed out the glaring issues in the map that you wanted hot maps to resemble is when I became “wrong”. I’m not addressing the thread ( which has multiple views of different thing from different users) through you.

A good portion of the player base wanted increase difficulty in content- the only way to do that in this game is to require map coordination- In order to have deceant coordination there had to be a general timer.. Obviously with numerous time zones its not going to be exactly perfect for EVERY player.

No need to beat around the bush mate, just come out and state " I wanted more mindless farm maps with low particpation requirments".

A) HoT meta events are no more difficult. They’re in fact pathetically easy now that people have the cat-wrangling aspect of it down. Requiring coordination is fake difficulty.

HoT maps are mindless zerg maps. Just more inaccessible because of timers, and that’s the aspect of Silverwastes that I’d have liked to see. Player-driven progress. I’m astounded that people consider HoT map meta events challenging, by the way. They’re no more difficult than anything produced in the preceding 1 or 2 years. Break some eggs, hit a boss. Press ‘f’ near some mushrooms. Hit a boss. It’s mind-boggling how this can be perceived as superior content. I think it’s mainly a matter of people justifying their purchase.

Sure, it was a mess. That’s why I proposed something like Silverwastes, but not exactly Silverwastes. In the very post you’re quoting, no less.

Wait for it…

Silverwastes with rewards tied to participation level
Hopping from map to map to just do the end boss will net you next to nothing if you always have 0% participation.

I never said I wanted the HoT maps to resemble Silverwastes. That’s what you’re taking out of context.

Denial over 5000!!!!!

That is agreeable, unfortunately thats the price of open world gameplay. That plus this games’ userbase…..where if they fail its too hard or if they don’t get an item 10 mins into the patch then game is grindy. I like that arguement when i see it " This game is so grindy, its like I have a second job….. all I want to do is spend 40 hours a week playing the game my own way"

And with that I’m done with you. The very notion that you know what I want better than I know myself is just laughable. Or sad if I had any empathy.

Because he didn’t consult us about it? He could have been thinking of leaving for years. When I left my position as manager of a computer store I’d been at for 13 years, not a single person expected it. Caught everyone off guard, but I’d been wanting to leave for many years. I just didn’t have the right situation lined up to do it. Eventually I left anyway. The point is, people who worked with me every day didn’t know.

There’s no real way to extrapolate that he left because of HoT.

Very true.

Pattern matching is one of the strengths of our brains. Someone dies every time we use a particular waterhole? Let’s use a different one: maybe there’s a crocodile in the old one.

Trouble is, we’re too good at it, thus various superstitions and the like.

That said, there could very well be a link between Colin leaving and HoT. When a major new project does not meet expectations, it isn’t exactly unusual for the lead to move on or to be asked to move on. It could be something planned long ago, it could be he doesn’t feel like making the changes it is now apparent are needed, it could be he was asked to leave. While we don’t know for sure, some linkage is more likely than not.

Not knowing for sure isn’t the same as not having a suspicion

I find this thread very hard to understand.
I bought HOT and I must confess I didnt like it much.
Basically too hard to find your way around , so I simply went back to playing in the world that existed prior to HOT.
HOT is an expansion, it doesnt change the original game , so if you dont like HOT why does this make the original game not playable.
I used to play WOW which had many expansions.
Some I liked and some I didnt, but I never left the game because of an expansion I didnt like.
I did leave it finally because it consumed too much time , expansions not withstanding.

It’s more of ‘people left because they had nothing to do in-game that they have not already done ad nauseum.’ And we won’t have anything new to do until around July. But don’t worry. Someone will say the population and the game is fine despite my and others’ experience. Nevermind the many threads that have posed this question whether directly or indirectly. It’s all fake ‘doom and gloom.’

This is the official forums after all.

Except that we’ve been losing top guys to other companies for a long time even before HOT launched. Which is more likely. A game that has some heat but didn’t actually fail, because if it did we’d have heard that at the stock call, decided to ask a game director to leave after 12 years at the company, or he got hired away like Jeff Grub, Chris Whiteside, Jon Peters, Eric Flannum….this hiring away thing has been going on a long time. It doesn’t help that Amazon is in the same town and they’re looking to make some kind of online game. Anet can’t compete with Amazon.

So there’s more than one pattern to choose from and saying oh, it’s more likely they asked him to leave is probably crap, because if that were the case, he wouldn’t still be working his last week.

When you ask someone to leave, you don’t leave them around to finish up stuff. It’s just too much of a risk.

No, I don’t believe for a second he was asked to leave. There are far too many people being hired away to believe that that isn’t a more plausible explanation.

I wish I had a nice system to play on. But running the game off of a core i3 mobile integrated GPU I can’t really do better than 20-30 FPS even on “best performance” settings. It’s a shame because even so the new maps are amazingly beautiful and detailed. Definitely a step up from the old world maps, but be prepared for the convoluted layouts (hope you like exploring!) and difficult enemies! It was quite a surprise when I first entered the verdant brink (Oh! Wow! How beautiful…and I’m dead!)!

There have been many forum threads analysing how dependent GW2 and now with its expansion, HoT, is on running most of all its main process on a single thread even on multi core (or multi threading) processors, so you will not see any better performance just because you have a high end computer, especially with video card in crossfire or SLI which will not be of any help much in these kind of situations. Two or more video card is only good when clients core processing can take advantage of processing that information in time and send it to video card to handle the parts of that information which a dedicated video processing unit is better to handle like physics and visual information.

With higher resolution it can be worth to have more then one video card, but for only playing GW2/HoT it will not solve problems related to how this game have been designed to distribute workload CPU with more or less only one main tread instead of dividing workload after how many potential core/threads that a processing unit can handle and let video card handle physical and visual calculations instead.

On a laptop you usually don’t have a very large display with extreme high resolution (like 4 times 1920 × 1080 [3840 × 2160] pixel aka 4K or UHD) at least not for normal usage. Gaming laptop will have to be a bit large in size compared to more portable lightweight work computer due to get rid of heat and therefore need to have heatsinks and air vents to get rid of heat. They also cost a lot more then the cheapest “office” or “multimedia” laptops, so you can not compare a gaming laptop or stationary gaming computer with the more mobile laptop designed for light workloads.

There is a 64 bit client which work very well, but the core engine in this game is nearing its threshold for what can be done with more and more advanced video processing (ambient occlusion; different types of AA etc) and what is going on in game like more vertical levels with maps you now both can glide into and get hit on a different level from ground/air, more mobs and large scale fights do also take its toll which have to processed both from on your computer through its client and from ANets server which both have to keep up their end to not create rubberbanding (you toon might jump back and forth as client and server have different information on your position in game or your hits isn’t accounted correctly for in visual, so you seem to hit something which isn’t there or getting hit by something invisible).

The first weeks after HoT was released to public there where several posts about problems related to how much more processing there where in these maps (probably because at that time there where a higher population on maps; zergs) which gave odd behaviour for game. There is still today problems where people complain about DC or not getting any loot when large scale event is over.

In short:

High end computer does not solve every problems that can be shown as low FPS during zergs (or places with many things to calculate in a short time frame and show on screen) and every other problem this might have which can be related to client/server problems. Game engine have been designed for that time of visual content and video card, processing power and DirectX that was common at that time which now is beginning to show some limitation for what can be done.

64 bit client helps in that game engine can access more RAM directly and that way reduce some problems with how game handle memory allocation.

(A) If you upgrade to gaming laptop, get one that work with other game engine then GW2/HoT. Don’t expect that more cores/threads on CPU will be used in this game (at least not how it is working today without a redesign of core engine) or that you will need SLI/Crossfire solution to get the most out of this game.

(B) If you get a stationary gaming computer, then you will probable get better FPS with good video card that run with a dedicated video processing unit. Have enough RAM (8 GB or more). You will probably also have larger screen then on a laptop and therefore have a slightly higher resolution (depends on how far you sit from screen and your need in general).

A single GTX970 or AMDs competing GPU will be enough for resolution around 1920 × 1080 or a bit higher. Crossfire/SLI means more heat and potential more sound from air ventilation. Water based cooling is an option, but cost a bit more and isn’t necessary absolutely soundless. Air cooling with silent running fans in a sturdy built case to reduce vibrations can work as well and you will need to have fans even on water cooling somewhere.

Woah! That was a lot of technical info there, ShadowCatz! Thanks! But I have a hard time believing I wouldn’t see playable framerates on better graphics settings if I were running the game off of a decent, dedicated GPU. It just isn’t in the cards for me at the moment, and I will always prioritize performance over appearance (especially when I’m already at the point where the framerate starts to show a good bit of chop!).

No big deal. The game still looks better than anything else I’ve seen. WAY better than WoW, certainly! And I had to play that on lowest settings, too. I even reached 100% exploration in VB the other day, but still find myself going back just to bounce around the jungle fighting off enemies and completing events. The place is just too cool!

I’ve seen on countless sites that GW2 in on the top mostp layed MMOs out there, mostly in second or third place.

I also noticed a lot of the controversy caused by the expansion — more related about its content, features, perfomance and price.

I’m on a weak laptop, but I manage to run GW2 with average 25-30 fps in all of Tyria. Sadly my fps are below 10 in HoT, but I manage to play it if I select the lowest graphical setup available.

I don’t really like the new maps. They’re really hard and I feel lost. I prefer to play by myself and when I bring a friend we just rush it. I also have died a lot.

There are way too many threads complaining about GW2: HoT. Many people have left because of the expansion and another handful of players avoid the expansion like the plague. I also heard that the HoT sales were dreadful. Is this true?

hey man, i hear you. tbh, me and my guildmates, started playing since the betas. we kept at a solid pace of playing up until the release of the HOT. we stopped playing, why?

because we felt short changed. think of it like we felt we were robbed at some point. here’s why. we bought the game for $60 the gw2 original game, which we enjoyed without a doubt. and when we heard that the game was going to be for free, we were like oh okay thats cool. so more people could play.. But then we thought, how does the pre-paid players differ from the new free guys who play now? whats the $60 advantage over the new ones?

free story expansions? more character slots? which are more or less UNLOCKABLE as a free player, and a FRIGGIN AESTHETIC SET.. thats all?

and those who would opt to buy the HOT is the SAME PRICE as the original game?!?!
so we thought maybe an incentive would be nice to the OLD players who built this game’s pillars and reputation, maybe arenanet would give us like a discount on the HOT, i mean for the existing players… maybe we play $30 more for expansion? seemed fair. but noooo… arenanet wants to milk our wallets.

we found it unfair.. a lot of us did. and to think, we beta players believed that we would be taken care of. veterans of the game are then shrugged off to the sides… no mere compensation for the hours we put into the game….

all we asked for was a mere respectful “discount” to the pre-buyers of the game.

so what did we get from the $60 before?
a friggin set, extra expansion slots, inventory slots, adventure content..

and to think, aside from the set, the others mentioned could be farmed for within the game. great sale value for $60…. what a rip off.

i dont hate the game. i loved the game for all its content… we just felt short changed and very disappointed with how they, arenanet, wont give an acceptable compensation for the veterans.

sorry for the rant. i just thought i could share my guild’s, my friends’, side on this matter.

goodluck to you mate! i hope arenanet serves you guys better than they did us.

How does a free player go about unlocking character slots, etc ?

Let me get this straight. Anet produced a game that you bought and loved. You played it a lot I assume? And now they owe you compensation for the fact that you enjoyed the game enough to play it a lot? You, as you stated, spent time using a service and expect the service provider to compensate you for using the service? Apparently I have been doing things wrong all this time. Instead of paying for cable and internet I shall submit a bill to Comcast for the hours spent using their service. Hmm, $50 per hour, 8 hours per day…hey I will be able to quit my job!!!

Free players are HEAVILY restricted. They can’t buy and sell stuff on the trading post. They can’t talk in map chat. They don’t get daily log in rewards. In fact it’s very very difficult for free to play players to make money at all, or get ascended gear.

Try that without laurels one day (which mostly come from log in rewards they don’t get). Not being able to buy and sell freely, or access a guild bank, or talk in map chat is a major handicap. It’s more like an unlimited demo than the full game.

You really should try a brand new free account with no help for a while, because you really have no idea of the limitations it comes with.

Not to mention unless you bought it right before it went FTP you also got to play it long before the FTP players did. I can buy games I bought for $60 years ago for less than $10. I’m not being screwed over by this, it’s just how it goes. They don’t need to compensate you for the hours put into a game because playing the game is entertainment, not a job. Presumably you were playing because it benefited you.

That said a discount would have been nice because it’s a bit pricey for an expansion.
