If you hadn’t said that you weren’t a native English speaker I would have never known.
Your idea of changing the current masteries to collections/achievements would make the progression fun instead of what’s currently mind-numbingly dull. I initially thought that masteries would be unlocked primarily by doing the story like any Metroidvania or Zelda game, but it’s completely the opposite. I was also hoping that getting the elite specs would come from achievements or story, only having mastery points on the map, but it takes the same far too long system to get an individual elite spec. I also wouldn’t mind if map completion takes masteries, but requiring them to get hero points is really wrong.

Best idea I’ve read in a long time. The xp really sucks too because it just becomes a game of who can stack the most boosters. This system would be way more rewarding and it would be way more rewarding through exploration.

THIS is an amazing idea!
There’s so many posts out there just bashing the system. (I don’t like it either), but +1 for coming up with an actual solution to the very real problem instead of just complaining about it.
This would be sooo much more enjoyable than grinding for EXP. and you’re completely right, why the hell would killing mobs help me learn how to speak a language or glide…
It would be much more rewarding if there was something like your suggestions behind it. Or even a small quest.
EXP is terrible for this. I absolutely cannot enjoy it, I’m stuck in the story, and instead of having fun gliding around and exploring I’m finding myself following a few people mindlessly for some exp to get my mastery points to a point where I can at least play the story. It’s not fun. Exploring however is what I loved about the original game. I could go do whatever I wanted. Here I’m stuck waiting for my masteries
Masteries should be fun to get. Not a grind. At least the ones that I needed for the story. I don’t care if it takes forever to get the speed bonus in cities or the other useless masteries. But making it a grind to get through the story is annoying.

I have a feeling, this is what ANet wanted.

Brilliant idea. I only know about VB from these forums, but even I can see that your idea is much more palatable, and fun, than what we currently have. Frankly, each mastery should be like a renown heart. Do a bunch of related quests, scavenger hunts, etc. Then the mastery is unlocked.
Take the frogs, for instance, first they don’t trust you…then you gain their trust as part of their quest line. Then they send you to get a book or something so you can begin to learn. Eventually, through a series of mini-quests, you get the mastery.
But now, it sounds like you just kill mobs until you get the xp. How…um…“clever”?
It just makes me sad because all the art, music, the new specs and the idea behind masteries is really great.
I realise that its way to late to change something on this magnitude at this point but, man, I really hope that the next expansion gets back to what makes this game so great.

I just hope ANET to REMOVE the mastery requirement to continue the story. It’s easy to let us be able to use it in the mission only.

Firstly,
I think the new maps are beautiful and amazing.
Although I think 400 Hero Points is to much for the elite specs (250-300 would be okay imo) it’s not my biggest problem. To my point:
What I dont like and honestly don’t get is why the Mastery system has to progress with exp.
For me, GW2 was always about exploration and finding cool stuff like jumping puzzles etc.So why do I have to kill enemies to get better at gliding? Why do I have to kill enemies to suddenly understand frogs?
That makes NO sense.
You already have a system that would be waaaaaay better than the exp grind.
Collections.
Make me run around the Jungle to search for 10~ NPC’s that teach me a new language.
Let me search the map for NPC that teach me how to be better at gliding.
Let me collect ingredients that make me resistent to poison mushrooms. That would make sense. It would let me explore the world. I would have the chance to choose what I want to improve.
Its just not fun to see that Hero Point and spending the next 10-15min to figure a way out to get to it only to be stopped by a poison cloud.
At this point I would’ve been happier with not knowing that there is a Hero Point at this place.Grinding EXP is just not fun and you should’ve known that.
why would you give us EXP tomes and lvl 20 scrolls if you didn’t know that.ps: not a native english speaker. be gentle pls
Great idea !
What you’re suggesting would actually give the path to masteries some purpose… what we have now instead is a grind in the purest sense.

Only good part about this grind is that it’s once only. The masteries are account bound, thank god.

Completely agree. It’s just very disappointing, I was expecting a lot more passion to be put in to this expansion by development. There are a lot of little things I’ve noticed (like NPC mouths not moving when the speak, and the ridiculously clunky implementation of ‘activities’) that show a slow decline in the quality of product they’re producing.
When they stop caring about the little things, the much bigger things suffer as well. And masteries, being one of those bigger things, it a perfect example.
These aspects are just very disappointing. Don’t get me wrong, there are parts I love about the expansion – the look of the new area/s is wonderful as always for example – it’s just a shame they don’t seem to care as much as they once did about their product.
After some more thought I came to the conclusion that maybe I just expected something different from masteries.
When I first heard about masteries they sounded more like end game progression(the pact commander and legendary masteries are like that). Something that I can work towards after I completed the core experience. The exp grind would be more acceptable that way but thats clearly not what they had in mind.
Maybe I’m the problem and not the system it self?
