Mastery points and the ^ or v icon
That’s part of the point behind Mastery points though. You’re supposed to overcome the challenge of finding them, however long it takes. Which, if my memory of BWE2 is correct, is why there was a Mastery point that had no icon on the map.

Now I think they MUST put those icons to make it clear for everyone.

its helps to know if they are above or below you and the challenge is still intact getting to them
