This really fits with the them of the profession. I like it a lot.

Does this mean we will see a profession or two have anti-shouts like “Well of Silence” or “Ulcerous Lungs” in GW1?

http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Ulcerous_Lungs

OR, maybe this spec also has those in there to be its direct counterplay as well as a way to also counter/hurt shout warriors and guardians. aaawwww yissssss.

Well, while the English name is quite cool, the french translation is ugly as hell. I knew we would have to pay for the better name we got for the Dh, but not this fast…

What’s the translation?

Fauchemort. Word for Word, it is Reapdeath. And that’s crazy, since Reaper would be Faucheur, (and the name of Death is sometime the Grande Faucheuse, so it would have been better).

So, it’s basically the reverse of the Dragonhunter.

Oh, i am so sorry.

I see many Voldermort jokes incoming for you now. :/

I’m concerned about a long windup needing large groups of foes for full effect. I don’t see it as a bad thing, just not my general play style. I know that any slower skills I have are just about completely useless when I have others around me because the enemies die before my shot even lands (I’m staring at you, Thief Shortbow 2). And I seem to face one or two mobs far more often than groups of five or more when I’m fighting on my own. So this spec may not meet my personal needs. Which is why it’s good there are so many professions and spec versions thereof! Because some people are going to revel in this.

Tomorrow’s live stream will help a lot, if it’s run like the DH ReadyUp was. That one made DH look far more viable for how I play than the blog/video had.

This is not me saying I think the Reaper is lame, bad, or in any way uncool. I’m just unsure it will fit into how I play. I still have a necromancer with 100 skill challenges done just in case!

I have to say, the Reaper holds a lot of promise for the Necromancer in the future. Many players had been speculating about the Necromancer getting shouts with the Greatsword and basically just becoming a Guardian/Warrior. Yet they were all also considering how the profession could still feel like a Necromancer. Anet have definitely succeeded in retain the feel of the Necromancer in theory and we don’t even need to be actively using the greatsword for the incredible AoE lifeblast and DS mobility of the Reaper.

Now all we need is the Necro to provide some kind of unique support effect (Guardian is reflect and blocks, Mesmer is reflect and quickness, Ranger is spotter and frosty, Warrior is Banner of Discipline, Ele is love Ele is life, Engineer is everything if you’re lucky, thief is stealth), the Necro could easily have a shout that provides a unique benefit to allies, though it likely won’t be “hi, my party now deals 7% more damage” like the Warrior and Ranger. We just need to keep an eye out for it.

So long as you can keep moving while you ‘windup’ your attacks, I don’t think it will be a problem for me. Once you get used to the timing, slow attacks are not a problem if you can keep moving while casting, much like the guardian hammer 4 skill.

Of course, like you say, it will come down to each player’s preferred playstyle.

Simplicity is complex.

Good feedback is key to getting the developers to listen to you.

Well this is the first specialization that suffers a huge penalty for not taking the new weapon along with it. Power Necro’s can’t AOE well without the new GS so I guess we will see a very large amount of GS necros now. Not necessarily a bad thing, just interesting that this is the first specialization that can’t take full advantage without the weapon.

Also they don’t get any new F skill, just different particle effects for their existing F skill… which is odd…

Well not all necros have to be power. Still I see where you’re coming from, the new weapon really does give the Necros what they lacked, decent AOE direct damage. So I’m not sure this will be a must have for all power necros (especially since it seems more focused on group encounters).
Also they seem to be replacing one of the F1 skills.

Only negative I can see with this is that my Mesmer and my Necro are my two favorite toons. How the hell am I supposed to decide which to play in HOT first now?

Simple. Necros are getting a bad-kitten new theme while Mesmers get more butterflies. So Necro obvious XD

WHY is this so cool but guardians get crap dragon hunter?

Oh come on Necros have been needing some loving for a while now.

None of necros current power weapons hit more than 2 targets.

I assume you mean with the default attack?

So glad i have on of everything at 80 xD

And I’ve got 2 necros! Going to move my Condi off on my second necro and then go greatsword on my main. Going to have to get some proper zerker gear though… Eish more ascended grind XD

I believe that, in its core, the elite spec will be slow, but you could be able to integrate quickness into the build to help speed up a little bit. Not that you will be able to overcome the natural slow speed 100% of the time, but still… that’s a thought.

Weapon – Greatsword

  • Slow attacks with big damage modifiers

Sounds easily interruptable.

Utilites – Shouts
snip

  • Effectiveness based on how many opponents are hit

So it’ll be useful in Courtyard where the enemy tends to zerg, but not very useful when you don’t have many enemies on you at once. Roamers with interrupts will love fighting Reapers lol.

they will probably be the class that can trait a defiance bar.

got to see it in play, but this one seems like it will have a very strong playstyle difference, really expands necro.

now i have to ponder if i should make a new necro… asura with GS doesnt really excite…

I agree, it makes a ton of sense thematically for what they described they wanted the Reaper to be. A slow but unstoppable force character is exactly where I’d put a defiance bar. Doubly so given that Necro as a whole gets very little in the way of boons like Stability which would be the other option for this sort of character.

On a whole I love everything I’ve seen so far and can’t wait to see more. This really feels like it’s addressed a lot of things necros have been wanting for ages. A high damage melee weapon with proper cleave/AoE. A leap/mobility skill, alongside a pull.

OK, I am really getting tired of this belief that if you are not somehow actively buffing everyone around you that you are somehow a selfish class.

Condi-cleanse and redistribution, boon stripping, area CC and conditions all help a group during group play. Can we please stop labeling Necro as a selfish class simply because they don’t play like the other classes already? Not everything in this game revolves around dungeon speed runs. I could make the argument that thieves are the most selfish, but it wouldn’t be entirely true either.

I like the direction the Reaper is going in since they seem to be about both keeping with what the Necro does well (in direct team support) while also delivering better on the damage front.

I find it a bit sad. Necros wanted shouts. They got them. But they were hoping shouts would lead to more group utility. Seems that their shouts are all damaged based. So it really seems that, unless old traits/skills are getting reworked, they still offer very little group synergy. Still not fond of the death shroud mechanic and I doubt I will like the reaper shroud any better. Hopefully this is a fun addition for necro fans. It didn’t entice me as someone that doesn’t like necros currently.

I’d like if we could get some real feedback, suggestions, and concerns on the new Necromancer Specialization.

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Reaper

There is the link to the wiki page that sums up the article: https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/meet-the-reaper-necromancers-elite-specialization/

To start it off; I’d like to see some GW1 necro put into the Reaper. We got some shouts that deal damage, could we get a shout that deals X% of your HP for each enemy hit, dealing X% damage to each, with an additional effect, be it 100% crit chance or healing per % damage hit.

Now that I’m not busy with classes and finals I can become more active, I plan on making more of these; if they are successful. So lets get a nice list I could send to Arena Net before HoT is out and maybe some of it can actually go into the game! Direct feedback is nice isn’kitten

Whilst we’ll have to wait until tomorrow to see if it actually makes the class viable the examples they give are not encouraging. The traits make it seem like it’s going to be once again very selfish oriented and that shout is just another minion skills, and the weakest minion type at that.

There’s so much boon spam, there isn’t a NEED for an entire spec dedicated to it! If you really want a bunch of might, get a War or an Ele. If you want Aegis and Protection, get a Guardian. As it is, either barely anyone wants defensive boons like Vigor, most have Fury coming out their ears and people outside of WvW don’t even know what Retaliation does. So even if this spec was ‘supportive’ to a team, if it didn’t give might or aegis, it’d be labled as trash anyway.

This minor trait with chill on fear is kinda odd. Makes sense if it is adept or something. What if i want to fear someone off a cliff? My victim will have enough time to think and use condi removing thanks to walking speed my fear will give.

That will be a drawback, he WONT fall off the cliff; so you dont play a fear reaper in that case, you play a fear necro.

With fear reaper, you are trying to keep them disabled but close by to hammer them. Cliffs arent always available after all.

That being the case, this could be a lot of fun to combine with runes of the nightmare, necromancer, or sunless.

Not a massive lover of the name…but that goes out the window after reading;

This devastating melee brawler is at home in battle when surrounded by as many enemies as possible, cleaving through hapless foes for life-force sustainment. Once the reaper has enough life force, they can transform into a devastating avatar of destruction that leaves enemies frozen in terror.

Some overlaps to my old Dervish

I’m confused about the shouts.
THE benefit of AoE is that the more enemies within it’s reach, the more effective it is.
This actually creates some balance issues, inherent to the nature of how AoE works. The more effective something is single target, the greater it becomes when it hits multiple targets. There’s a multiplying effect.
This can be a problem though, since skills can then either be too powerful when hitting the maximum number of targets, or lackluster if only affecting one target.

With shouts, it sounds like they took that and compounded the problem.
Quote from the blog:
“All of these shout skills act as attacks that can hit up to five enemies and scale in effectiveness based on the number of targets struck. In this way, the reaper is rewarded for diving into the thick of battle to engage as many foes as possible.”
Their design direction for the shouts seems to be “let’s make them great in AoE situations”. Or, read in reverse “let’s make them utterly lackluster to use single/duo target”.

Wouldn’t you usually look for ways to alleviate the AoE balance problems, not make them more extreme?
