Really like the slight technically angle we get during the last parts of the blog. Always nice to read some behind the scenes thingies.

Outstanding information and agree that they seem to be going out of their way to show us what they are building under the surface – which will be important as the game grows through living story and other updates.

There is, however, one thing I would like to see a developer add or expound upon and that is particle effects from player cast abilities. Fire building up in an enemy’s belly wont be of much value if players can’t see it through all of the player attacks/effects.

That said, I am extremely excited about this kind of content. This kind of stuff is what I most want from the expansion.

Effect clutter in large group situations is something that we’re aware of and have been working on improving, though it’s a difficult challenge with tradeoffs between having good communication of the abilities, especially in smaller combat situations or PvP, versus readability and visibility in large fights.

One advantage we have with the Wyvern is that it is big enough to rise out of the haze of effects so that it’s easy to see the skill animations and effects without being too big to the point that you can’t tell what it’s doing when you’re close to it.

Glad to hear you are finally fixing Defiance, hoping you’ll address condition caps next.

Is the Defiance fix going to be applied to old bosses and creatures or just to new content?

Dat Defiance change, me likey. Will this effect enemies across the entire game, or just the expansion? Because if it’s across the entire game, then we’ve just seen something which could really revitalize some of the fights in the game.

This new system seems excellent! It also feels a lot more organic and true to the word “defiance”.

Can’t wait to smack down that defiance bar!

From what I’ve read about condition caps, it’s going to be very difficult for them to fix that anytime soon, so don’t get your hopes up.

As for whether or not the defiance change affects old content, I can’t imagine why you have to ask this question. Why on Earth would they change something like that only for the new content?

With ANet putting more efforts into visualization techs of various sorts, I come to ask myself now, if it might be also possible, if you will improve with HoT or in general also more of the rest of this games combat visualizations…

Alot of enemy creatures, champs and world bosses so far have no clear visualizations for their skills and aoe attacks that make it clearly visible for a player what a creature/champ/world boss is planning to do, so that players often have to try to read the “body language” of a creatures combat animations to get to know, when its best to dodge .

there are even parts in the game, where still that old visualization system gets still used which shows for AoEs just only these very thin and sometimes barely seeable red rings.
Thats somethign that needs to get changed, thols old red ring animations need to get completely exchanged out with the improved attack visualization system, that you introduced with the beginning of Season 2..these broad shining orange visualizastions are much better and do look also alot better, are much better clearly visible and recognizable for everyone to know

uh oh, I should get my virtual butt quickly out of here to not get hit.
Thats a section, where i think, that ANet coukd get alot of inspiration from the designs and systems of FF14 and Wild Star, when it comes to combat visualizations for attacks to give players to see, when and where an attack is coming, what a KIND of attack it is (circular aoe, line of sight aoe, cluster aoe, fan aoe ect. and especially by changign the color or by adding other effects to it a signal, that shows the player, how DANGEROUS that attack is, so see, if that attack could possibly kill you, if it hits you, or if you might mostly likely survive it with your current amount of health)

lso combat visualizations should be added also to PLAYER versus PLAYER combat in PvP and WvW too, to give players a better visual warning about what kind of attacks enemy players are using agaisnt you and to visually see better when to dodge these attacks.

In PvE for examplewe can see, if an enemy is using a Line of Sight skill agaisnt us thanks due to the visualizations in combat, that season 2 brought to the game in the newer maps (thats my question where I hope, that you will update with this also all older maps someday)
But this kind of visualization system should also work for example in WvW or PvP, when I fight agaisnt an other player, for example in this case a great sword warrior which wants to use its whirling line of sight skill against me, then this attack shoudl be also visualized for me, if this attack gets used agaisnt me, but currently the game doesn’t visualize this in combat where players can battle agaisnt other players, works only for PvE so far sadly

TL DR: can we see in the future more visualization upgrades and actualizations for the games older content too??

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

I wonder if this Wyvern will have exclusive loot (like Jormag).
Looks waay to cool to be just a ordinary legendary boss.
What if the new particle effects for Fire Effects replaced the old ones? like Fire Elemental (Boss),Warrior Longbow skills,Elementalist fire skills (duh)

PS: Finally the right thread

From the Tentonhammer interview http://www.tentonhammer.com/interview/guild-wars-2-interview-jon-peters-and-kevin-stocker-talk-defiance-wyvern

Jon: One thing I will say is that because the Defiance bar is going to be in the core game, we’re not going to keep the old Defiance system on the old bosses. They’re going to use at least the most basic version of – they have a bar that you have to work together to break to stun this creature. That is the most basic version and that is the version that will exist which we retrofit that we don’t have time to do more on. That’s in every part of the game, not just Heart Of Thorns.

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

Excellent article!

Will other bosses from the core content be eventually redesigned to to take the new effect into account? I saw the bit about it being added to the old bosses, but it could be a good chance to redesign ones like Shatterer who need work anyway (see other threads on him)

This sounds like a lot of fun. I never really bothered trying to contribute to defiance before, because I’m almost never part of a well-coordinated group when fighting world bosses. To avoid screwing up what other groups might be trying to do, I’d simply stay away from using control type stuff, and focus on dps and healing. With this, I feel like I’ll actually be able to make a meaningful contribution to crippling a boss without having to find an actual team to join first.

I must say I’m rather disappointed with the subject of this blog. We already knew about the defiance changes.

I would have liked to see a blog about something we did not yet know.

Edit: And kitten this is the second time today a link from tentonhammer goes death mere seconds after I post it. Does this site run on a potato?

According to this the problem is not on my end. just checked the link and it worked again, then refreshed and it was down again..

That website only seems to work when it decides it wants to.

Listening to the description of the Wyvern just reminds me of the two years I spent doing Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, and how annoying Silver Rathalos can be.
