Soon commander tags will have a completely new UI, with the new squad functionality. For raids and WvW the new squad functionality will be really useful as it gives commanders and the entire squad new tools to use.

Speed boon is only in cities and only affects your 5 person party. It’s actually not related to the tag, you get that even if you don’t have the mentor tag up.
Mentor tags are PvE only
Mentors cannot create squads or use squad chats.
Mentor tags cannot change their color to differentiate from others on the map.
There are reasons for mentor tags. There are reasons for commander tags. I plan on using both at different times, it all comes down to which is appropriate. Most of the time the answer is ‘neither’. The only reason to complain about tags on the map that pretty much anyone can get is because the commander tag was bought to show off.
I bought a commander tag to mostly do mentoring. Then I found out about the mentor tags a few months later. Was I annoyed? Anyone would be because people had been asking for that exact thing for a long time, then breaking down and buying a commander tag as the closest option. Was I upset that everyone had a tag? No.
The only real problem I can see is if we see a flood of these tags being used (after the novelty has worn off) by people who have no interest in mentoring.
You do know you can get a mentor tag too. Just do some PVE in original content and or grind for that level 1 mastery and get your free tag. You can then be a “Mentor Commander”.
What I don’t understand with the Mentor tag is that you can activate it in lvl 80 zones. This is supposed to be used for mentoring new players so in should be in lower level zones, ok not necessarily only in starting areas but after level 70 they shouldn’t be used anymore. And also having a limit on the number of tag per maps could be a nice idea b/c in some maps every player is mentoring… but the question is : is there still anybody w/o the tag to be mentored?

Even level 80 content requires teaching others, Ranael. I’m fine with the tag what it is, as soon as commander gets the upgrade of the new squad/command UI.

I fully support that. The tool is good, people just need to use it. The way it’s meant to be used, not to show off they have it. It used to be the same with commander tags back in the heyday, every jerk displayed them all over maps. We’ll have to wait for the novelty to wear off a bit. Then they’ll stop. Not much ANet can do about that.

And you miss the purpose of what it means to be a mentor. YOU see them as poor man’s commanders. Mentor, who tries to be a good mentor, is someone willing to teach mechanics of the new map. Leading through people that are in for the first time, for example. You can’t ask for something you don’t know is there. There’s no reason to restrict something that’s potentially good just because a bunch of nitwits don’t use it right. It would be like removing washbasins from public bathrooms on the basis that some people insist on spraying water all over the room.
When the novelty wears off, those people will go away and find themselves something else to amuse with. Just like you don’t see 30+ commander in each city anymore.

I’ve also experienced one or two VB where there were Mentor trains, in one case it was a guild, the other one not even. When people started to ask them to turn their tag off, the answers were :
-the guild one : “Yeah complain to Anet because we don’t have the squad when we need and we want to play together”
-the random one : “kitten this is our reward for grinding our mastery, you are just jealous because you paid 300 g for the same thing”
I know bad apples exist, no so long ago I encountered a commander who was still yelling in /m “NO AOE ON RED YOU MORONS !! GG NOOBS” but the mentor tag increases the probability to get one of those bad apples.
I personally think that in a high level zones, people should be experienced enough to be able to actually ask in map chat or ask for commanders to tag. A map like VB, even if you don’t need so much organization, should be handled by serious coms in each of the 5 chains (like we did in SW).
How do you know they aren’t being used correctly? In my experience most of the Mentor tags I’ve seen are explaining how each event works as they go. I have seen a few that act as commanders in the labyrinth, and I’ve also seen them tag down once a Commander tag was available.

Sure thing i am all in for commander tags 10k AP here so i don’t mind it even if they put the limit there.
Just like with Commander Tags, people can and will troll with mentor tags too. As far as I’m Concerned I like the mentor tag. I have both, I LIKE the fact we get a Chat Title (mentor) before our name, as it makes mentors stick out better then commanders. Commander tags have an array of colors to choose from, /squad commands, and /wvw commands that the mentor tag does not have. Also I do not believe the mentor tag can be used in WvW at all. So there is that too.
Also. I got my Commander tag when it was 100g, so for those that are QQ’ing over mentor and buying your tag for 300G please QQ at me some, as I need to feed on the QQ for my daily supply. K, Thx.

you are putting to much value on these tags in PvE.
I think we can all agree on one thing. When a player zones, All tags should be auto disabled. When a commander/mentor does, their Tag should be disabled.
This way if a player is tagging for a reason, they are forced to do it often.

Yes, by the time you are 80 you should not need a mentor. It is not uncommon to run into 80s who know less than someone who just joined though.
