Mentor-Tag abused as Comm-Tag
Just last night, somebody used a mentor tag to guide people in a HP run in Tangled Depths. As in, he led us through most of Tangled Depths and got us nearly all of the HPs (the only one some of us couldn’t get, which he explained beforehand, required poison and wallows mastery).
So yeah… restricting it to low level zones would ruin that bit of fun and community spirit.
I agree and disagree,
Where I disagree: I’m often in verdant brink and have a lack of commanders who actually know how to lead and only promote zerging which in turn leads to events being ignored especially night events where people seem to think that killing bosses is the only thing that needs to be addressed.
I was actually going to get my mentor tag today sometime so that I can help with rally points and escort missions which are the most ignored events in night VB.
Where I do Agree: It is NOT a WvW appropriate commander tag, and should be used appropriately in VB AB and the other maps.
It is not a special snowflake tag and flaunting it around standing in DR is about as annoying as seeing a commander in PvP or just standing in DR flaunting their looks – it’s useless.
I think commander needs an upgrade maybe put ‘Commander’ in front of the names and players who have the tag equipped or change their names and chat to the color of their tag to better identify who is who.
That’s what I mean, some people actually use the tags the right way and some don’t. But that doesn’t give people the right to be rude to them and threaten them to tag down when they’re actually helping out. If they’re just messing around and standing still, not helping out and such, then alright, ask them in a NICE way if they can please tag down so that people won’t be confused.
Yesterday we tried to get T4 at nighttime in VB, we missed 1 comm so we asked if someone could tag up, even a mentor. Because we partied each other and if they didn’t know what to do, we’d explain it to them so that they could understand what to do.
(we failed by a tiny bit tho, people didn’t listen sadly)
Anyways, my point is. Be nice, seriously. Yesterday a friend of a mentor tag had to literally speak up in the mapchat and ask people to please stop harassing and threatening their friend because of the tag. People shouldn’t have to do that over a stupid tag.
I agree with you, SnowHawk, that Commander tag getting a special chat designation such as “[Comm]” would be awesome. The tech is clearly there, considering mentor tags, so it shouldn’t be too hard a thing to implement and it’s not like it’d hurt anything.
I’m finding the mentor tags annoying in most cases. I can both agree and disagree here, though. I think there’s some people with them who genuinely want to help (the person described above who led a thoughtful and detailed walkthrough on hero points in Maguuma for example) but it seems like most maps I’m in now are just covered with these tags, and I just find it’s incredibly cluttered and distracting. A majority of the time they’re not speaking either (perhaps just to their guild or group?). I think a select few are trying to use the tags to be helpful, but most are just putting it up to flaunt it or something?
I’m not sure what a good solution is here, but I would like to see these tags rethought a bit.

Hmm. This gives me a thought (I’m brainstorming). If they implemented a toggle for mentors to allow their tag to only show to party members, then in cases of small guild/friend groups, they could use that toggle as a courtesy so that their friends can see it but not the whole map. That way if a map has a lot of splinter groups of friends running around, it’s not going to be cluttered with a mentor tag on all of them.

A toggle for mentor tags would be a good idea but I would suggest two more things. Not having it display mentor in chat if they are toggled off and not letting you toggle off mentor tags if you are tagged up as a mentor yourself.
I wonder how many of the people who dislike the mentor tag have a commander tag and just don’t want their purchase to be devalued?
Me, for instance.
It actually enrages me to find that I’ve wasted 300g on something almost free.

Your honesty wins the thread.
not everyone waste 300 G to be a commander and almost no one ask to be inside the squad… this new tag is a blessing, you don’t need a real comm to lead an event train anyway
This. Gold is better used elsewhere.

Tbh those “commanders” who are harassing people with mentor tags are the real problem.
Would be interesting if those people got there precious tag revoked if reported enough.

Commanders should take their expert leadership abilities to wvw and mentors should be tweaked to do the job commanders currently do in pve, also change the way commander tags are earned into a wvw thing since that was the original purpose for the tag(obviously refund everyone who bought the tag since that’s only fair).
Another option is rename mentor pact commander since you gain it from the mastery track of the same name….heck rename the commander tag to commnder of the mists to destinguish the two and give both the same abilities but restircted to their own areas and problem solved.
Also maybe restrict the ability to tag up in all maps to a later level pf pact commander mastery as it’s something worth working for if you really want to lead….this however would mean fixing the xp farms folks use to max masteries in tyria.
As someone who tries to do his fair share of pve events commanding, i don’t mind at all. Now i can work with people who are active and on teamspeak, instead of someone who by pure chance has a commander tag. It’s awesome.
Easy fix: Instead of pact mastery 1 auto unlocking the mentor tag, it allows you to unlock it at a vendor for 300g.
I’m some one with both the commander and mentor tag.
In open world PVE. I’m struggling to find reasons to use commander tag over the mentor tag. I usually just end up using the mentor tag. You stand out more.
Just make the mentor tag visible only to members of the mentors party. There is no need time in which someone needs to “Mentor” an entire map. If you’re doing that then its commanding.
I already knew this would happen when I first looked at the masteries. I guess the easiest way to solve this problem is to make the troll tagging reportable. First with a warning and something like a 1 week suspension, to be followed up by a permanent removal of the functionality if the player still abuse it (if reports are taken seriously, of course). If I’m new to the game and see a mentor tag, I expect that person to help out, not to pull trains and whine about the noobs they’ve actually set a mark to show their help for.
I’ve never seen anyone pop a mentor tag in WvW.
Most everyone serious about WvW bought the tag when it was still 100g; I did.
Having only red mentor tags on the map means it is more difficult to differentiate for multi team coordination.

You know what though? I could just like, get a mentor tag and lead people around because I have content or hero points or whatever I want to get..and have no clue what I am doing but because I have the TAG people will follow. I would never do that. but I bet some will.
The only problem I have with mentor tags is people in maps that can’t answer any questions. If you’re wearing your mentor tag, you had better be able to answer any question about that map that I ask you.
Otherwise, tag down.

This. If someone really wants to help people, like REALLY, then they should get their kitten up and farm 300g for Mentor Tag. Its not that hard… I would gladly buy it for 300g.

That would utterly defeat the point of it being a mastery. Anet clearly wanted to give people a way better help out other players that was not high in cost.

I am lost. Why do people talk about them as if they were interchangeable?
