So Either Mordremoth is truly just small , or that was a trick and it was just one of his champs. I really hope it was a champ, because the fight was so underwhelming. Anyone agree?

If you pay attention to the dialogue leading up to the fight you’ll find out that the boss you encounter is actually a physical manifestation of Mordremoths mind within the dream.
Many people are arguing that the MASSIVE world boss you fight in Dragons Stand is his main body, but as his mind can outlive that body (something something jungle) he just grows new “mouths”.

Even rushing through on no sleep I thought it was pretty clear that was his mind in the dream we were fighting. That’s not his real “body”.

Edit: From a mechanical view point, I think the map-wide mouth fight combined with the solo mind fight is pretty satisfying.

While I have several negative things to say about this encounter, I have to applaud Anet for how they presented the fight. In the game there are 1000’s of other players running around, but we are each our own protagonist. By having an instanced fight against the ‘mind’ and a map-wide fight against the ‘body’ you get your cake and eat it too.

Every player is the ‘slayer of Mordremoth’ because they were the one that went into the Dream and destroyed him, while the rest of the population was struggling against the ‘body’ and distracting him.

I also enjoyed the mechanics of the fight, it was refreshing and having several stages made it feel more enjoyable.

This is the end of the positive things I have to say about the Mordremoth fight.

My smallest complaint is about the model of Mordremoth — It did nothing for me, he looked like a fat bowser without a turtle shell, to the point that my friends and I have taken to calling him Koopa-King. I know the fight takes place in the Dream and that this model is used to represent a ‘self-image’ of Mordremoth or even just a form that the Player Characters can perceive. I don’t have an issue with the ‘small size’ of the boss, as there are several things you can do mechanically and combat wise with a smaller (and humanoid) target.

I would like to say, however, that Anet does have a decent track record with four-legged enemies in Living World and the previous story steps in HoT. The Jungle Dragon Lieutenant that attacks the Pale Tree was a very good fight, that really felt action-centric — you felt as if you really were being hounded by a dragon in that encounter. I can’t help but think the fight may have been more ‘epic’ if they had followed this model, but at the same time perhaps they wanted to take a break since they have done that so often (Lieutenant, Vinetooth, Faolain). This really boils down to a personal preference, but I did not like the model for Mordremoth.

Next: BUGS. Oh good lord. How did this not get polish? This is the single most important fight of the entire bloody expansion (storywise), how did this not get the resources to nip the myriad of bugs that plague it? I personally experienced only three, but I’ve heard of a few more. The one’s I experienced were: Reality Rifts spawning in mid-air and being unusable, Pale Tree disappearing from the arena totally but having courtiers spawn and spell effects play (for 10+ minutes) and the final Rift ‘overload’ just not working. I also experienced some difficulty with the updrafts apparently not working but I’m not sure if this was a L2P issue or not.

All-in-all this fight was heavily tainted by the frustration of these bugs (some people have also reported crashing between cutscenes). The fight itself was not too difficult and the mechanics were novel and fairly interesting, but being forced to restart over and over by encountering bug after bug after bug totally ruined the experience for me. Please Anet, if there is one part of the story that you can choose to give extra polish and ensure it is bug-free, make it the climax! I have other problems with the story of HoT, but I dont’ want to derail.

TL;DR: Koopa King needs some TLC.

The Mordremoth you fought in the story was how you, the commander, associated him to look like or what he manifests himself as in the dream. The whole thing they were playing throughout this expansion was that Mordremoth has no physical form. He is all the vines/roots you see throughout the maps. Meaning, even if you were to kill all of the vines, they would just grow back.

Thus, he has no physical form. However, it is implied that the Mouth of Mordremoth in the Dragon’s Stand meta is how Mordremoth represents himself. Meaning it’s how he would physically represent himself if he were to associate with a “form”. This is implied by the fact that in the story instance, if you noticed the constant black shadowy face that is always behind Mordremoth is exactly the same face as the Mouth of Mordremoth.

Now as for mechanics? The fight was waaaay better than Zhaitan but lacking in build up mainly because it happens so quickly and drastically. The bugs in the instance sucked though.

I like the idea of the fight well enough. But some of the beings you have to fight are annoying for the sake of being annoying, compounded by the bugs…I’ve decided to wait until they fix some of those before I try to finish it again after getting shut down twice by the rift in midair bug.

I found 3 bugs for now, it’s impossible to complete:
1) I got a rift spawning in the air so i could not cuse it
2) I fell in a spot through the border where i could nor ffall down nor jump up so i needed to drop the instance
3) After channelling the rift, nothing happened (it was the second ally)
(4) to survive the big attack i used the jumping thing but i got downed mid jump and when i landed i was dead, poor design.

It seems this mission didn’t go through enough testing and was released in an inacceptable state.

SPOILER!

Definitely a Physical manifestation of Mordy’s mind in the dream. We’re attacking the mind while there are thousands (presumably) attacking his body. I enjoy the fight except for the bugs.

Caithe manifest will continue to attack after you’ve “dazed her” and try to open the rift. This interrupts your channel and you have to try again…… Only she continues to chase you…. I’ve tried it with stability and still manage to fail.

Some rifts appear out in space and you cannot get to them….. you have to jump off the edge and hope you don’t get revived so you can reset the fight.

Pale tree manifestation sometimes goes invulnerable mid fight and cannot be damaged. I ran around smacking her for 10 minutes and the buff never went away. Had to restart the instance.

Eir/Garm Sometimes Garm will pop right back up and you won’t get a phase to dps Eir… makes for a very long fight.

EDIT: I forgot about the updraft/glider phase…… Sometimes the glider opens on its own, sometimes you have to manually trigger it. If it opens and you try to manually trigger it… you close it up and fall back down to die. Best workaround I found is to wait until you are falling back down to trigger it manually, that way the game has time to trigger it if it’s going to.

I’ve bug reported many things in the final fight. I’ve currently played through it with 3 different classes trying to get my full set of Leystone armor. Currently working on Reaper and then Berserker for the last 2.
