100% disagree.

Taimi is by far my favorite character in the entire game, and I would hate it if her role or character was diminished in any way because some people don’t like her. I think her voice acting is perfect, her lines are spot on, and she has just the right amount of everything that makes a good character.

She’s pretty annoying for sure. Seems far better suited to a children’s cartoon. And I like dumb, goofy cartoons well enough but the cuteness just seems out of place here. We’re up against ancient dragons and evil cults, kitten .

Weak argument, especially with all the visual bling-bling you can have on a character which can feel – depending on the kind and combiniation of it – equally or more “off”.

Otherwise: I disagree. Taimi is awesome. Her optional dialogue about her role in the team in Rata Novus was quite good, and I like her interaction/dynamic with Braham.
“Doing something about her” simply due to her voice and whatnot is pretty immature but I concede that everyone has (a) character(s) bugging them and who could “fall down a cliff” without caring about it.

I disagree. My argument is pretty solid. The theme and setting that the game establishes have nothing to do with individual player design choices. There’s room for both goofy and grim elements either way, but I would have preferred a heftier serving of grimness. At least we still have Canach.

Nope, not everyone’s.

Nope, many people find her amusing.

her jokes are kitten

As fun as a kitten? Yes, many people would say that.

and overall her voice is higher than everyone else …

Like every asura, her voice is higher. Plus, you know, she’s a kid; their voices are typically higher, too.

Being smaller and weaker doesn’t justify the need to make the player’s ears bleed.

Correct. Good thing Taimi doesn’t make most players’ ears bleed.

Braham grieving over the mother that he ignored for so long, Jory grieving over the sister she lost — nope, those guys aren’t a barrel of laughs.

(Mind you, I also think the writing has been more uneven for their parts — the bits that include Canach and Taimi are more colorful and work better in terms of dialogue, progressing the story, and keeping me in the moment.)

I always loved canach, but he’s more a source of sarcasm and dark humor than a good laugh. Taimi provides that.

As for Braham, yes, he just lost his mother.. but he’s being rather irrational, and could use a good a pat on the back, with a chair, with some force behind it

Subjective opinions remains subjective opinions.

With story and character elements you’ll never be able to get everyone happy. The best they might be ablt to do is offer a mute option for story voices in general, I doubt unique character mute options are on the table.

That being said, I love most of the new crew (and old crew but that might have been because I read the books pre GW2 release). If there is any character which I might call slightly anoying at times, it’s Logan and his “my queen and country first” attitude earlier during the story. Yet while it did anoy me, I could understand his motivations.

As far as Taimi goes, absolutely love her. She reminds me in some aspects a lot of some people I know.

I have three problems with Taimi:
1. Her voice is shrill and obnoxious to listen to, regardless of content.
2. She’s a complete idiot that ‘sounds smart’ – to anyone someone with an elementary school vocabulary. And middle-manager smug. This is a problem all Asura really have, though.
3. She goes off on tangents and rants of no significance, subjecting us to complaint 1 for far longer than necessary.

So every single child voice is obnoxious to listen to? This opinion is highly subjective.

2. She’s a complete idiot that ‘sounds smart’ – to anyone someone with an elementary school vocabulary. And middle-manager smug. This is a problem all Asura really have, though.

So she is writen in character? Also I know quite a few people who are exactly the same. Come to think of it, this could describe a majority of the adult population.

3. She goes off on tangents and rants of no significance, subjecting us to complaint 1 for far longer than necessary.

Yup, still something widely spread in the adult population. Especially the teen to adult population (though in all fairness to teens, this extends to all ages).

IMO she is a believable character, and that’s what counts no matter if you like her or not.

I don’t mind her personality myself, I find it fits her. In my opinion I think they have done so much better with Taimi this season. Keep her as a smart in the lab person more, keep her talking to us on the radio, keep this child that has a physical condition that leaves her very vulnerable out of direct combat!! It was so frustrating to have her tag along so her golem could conveniently break down so we have to save her. Maybe use some of that authority as the commander to have her serve where she would be more useful.

I do think that they use Taimi too much to the detriment of the other characters. It’s funny that Anet styles our PC as “the hero” and yet what we have done this Season is be Taimi’s assistant. People talk about making a believable story but the former Commander of the Pact is not going to run around at the request of a young one with no position. Even if the Commander is a really nice person and doesn’t mind Taimi asking him to do things, he would be too busy dealing with leaders, planning meetings, or leading battles for this to be actually realistic.

This on top of my general complaints that Dragon’s Watch should not be babysitting children (Taimi or Braham) while we are trying to save the world.

As long as the quality of writing keeps improving, I think this trend will slowly die off. When these characters were introduced the writing was in a pretty shallow place, and these characters were two dimensional. Some improvements were already seen in LW season 2, but for me anyway I didn’t start noticing big changes until HoT and the LW season 3 seems to have good direction to the character development. Personally I was really unimpressed with how shoehorned in they all felt in LW season 1 and it took awhile for that first impression to wear away for me.

You know what they say about actors…if there is something making you hate / love their character, they’re doing the job right. Storytelling is about emotions, there are characters you like or you can connect to and then there are the others.
Can you imagine reading a book where there are only nice, likeable characters? Would be boring, wouldn’t it?

wouldn’t it be great if there was like a super villain who’s really powerful, and sometimes just casually shows up for some dialogue without all the villanous pompous behavior? Just like, oh hey, you here? just some local nice guy who’s friendly to everyone and in the meanwhile is just preparing for the end of the world. It would indeed be awesome to have some unusual bad guys. :)

I can even imagine a chain of events leading to Taimi being later portraited as bad one. Maybe her experimenting with strange inventions and energies would lead to a massive catastrophe? Maybe she’ll end up making the dragons more angry? Maybe even so much angry, that even our heroes cannot save the world and the remaining survivors would blame her?

What? Taimi is our sunshine. If not for the dragons, for her alone I would walk through whatever she sends me.

She (and Canach) are the best developed and believable current story NPCs. Essential. They have depth, Canach even more. The others are somewhat flat in comparison. The really annoying couple (Marjorie and Kashmeer) were “nerfed” already in LS3, so all is ok for upcoming events. At least as I see it.

Yes, that’s kind of my point there. I’m sure she has only the best intentions, but despite that anything could go wrong. And after some kind of dragon doomsday scenarios, there sure would be some survivors not considering her motives and blaming her. Even our history has many events misinterpreted by those who survived them.

But of course, we are talking purely hypothetical here… :)

Taimi is 17 so it’s not like she is an infant. This is reflected nicely in her character as I had mentioned earlier. Her not finishing school has nothing to do with it, who knows what it actually means to finish school as an asura.

Yes it is an artificial situation with a disabled and young character who is ment to require the player characters aid. We can’t have all those war heroes constantly messing up asking for help, sometimes it actually has to be someone were it makes sense they would be in need.

Taimi is probably the best character in all GW2. Her voice have never bothered me… but that doesn’t have so much to do with the character as it have to do with the voice actress.

It is very probable people that hate her voice simply have a better ear than me, and can hear some annoying tone I simply don’t. Like the bitter taste on brusel sprouts that I am not able to perceive.

Opposite to brusel sprout disgust, Taimi hate seems to be rather uncommon and highly subjective. I’ll continue enjoying them, they are just fantastic.

If the disabled person were controlling a high powered war machine or super modern drone, please explain to me why they wouldn’t be taken along. You are comparing apples to oranges. Taimis usefulness was never reliant on her phisical prowes. As a matter of fact, I’m quite sure most modern drone operators are not as physically fit as Seal Team members.

Now add to that she’s a 17 year old who is still in school (i.e. isn’t a child super genius already on a think tank) telling the Commander of the Pact what to do. If she was really that smart, why didn’t her government scout her ala Good Will Hunting?

Actually she is a child genius on a think tank. She got her research stolen away from her, is a driving force behind the excavation and research of Rata Novus and has to handle different interests of different parties while still trying to achieve her goals. It’s all there, you just refuse to see it.

Yes, unfortunately “the whole planet” is a hard character to care about without smaller more personal characters to whom we have made connections with. You are again throwing things together which belong seperated. A well designed crisis on a planetary scale provides a narrative setting, the characters in it provide meaning.

Not only is this situation with Taimi not believable, I laugh at the silliness every time she is involved in the story.

You dislike her, fine that is perfectly okay. Others enjoy her character and accept the character for what it is. I haven’t seen any arguments so far which support vast disbelief in her writing.

So, what does Taimi do???? She’s (apparently) really smart, sees all the answers that no one else can see, and devises solutions no one else is thinking up. She’s Wesley Crusher.

If that’s not an indictment, I don’t know what is.

what taimi does is research how magic works and how it can be used against the elder dragons since they like it so much

I guess that’s one way of looking at it. I think Taimi has proven distinctively useful to the team. It’s not like we’re out picking up her laundry.

My past couple of replies have been responses to comments that the Taimi writing is believable. The fact that she has turned out to be useful has nothing to do with the fact that the writing regarding Taimi is the least believable of all of the Commander’s party members over the seasons.

Yes, we know that. But look at the entire structure of Asura culture. It revolves around competition to be the best in your field and invent the best things in your field. During this time of war, why is the most effective group of people fighting the dragons (the Commander’s party) toting around a young Asura who hasn’t even finished school? Why don’t we have someone from the top ranks of Asura culture who has already proven themself?

And frankly no one should be allowing Taimi to do this research. If a college student discovered a secret building with alien technology, the grown-ups he knows would not allow him to keep it secret and go in there and play with the technology. Especially someone who has essentially been a NATO commander. They would tell the relevant authorities.

In real life, the entire group would be brought up on charges for keeping this information from the Asuran government during a time of war. But in GW2 Taimi’s research will save the day so everyone will overlook what she did and how we helped her hide it. This is why the Taimi writing is nonsensical.
