Please understand, I am not one normally to complain as I love this game and feel the devs do a generally amazing job. I love how ANET has made our characters interact with others and the environment.

but…

I can’t stand Taimi, Bram, Marjory, Kasmeer, and Rox. They’re supposed to be this incredible fighting team, but they whine and act like babies most of the time, not to mention they are incompetent in battle (though I understand why).

So, can you please not shove them down our throats? Let us players have our moments in the story WITHOUT anyone else. We don’t want the Diaper Destiny’s Edge.

To be fair three of them are basically kids, so it would make sense that they didn’t behave like full adults. I don’t think they have ever been claimed to be an “incredible fighting team” actually for that matter.

I am sure there will be parts of the story where we will be alone. But one have to keep in mind that we are going deep into enemy territory, doing that on your own is usually not a very good idea.

Agreed, but I would rather have some pact members who aren’t the focus of the story tag along.

Again, it’s just me complaining. Feel free to ignore.

The Pact is basically destroyed, so not really many of those that can tag along anymore.

The thing is, people prefer to have some sort of connection with the characters around them. Bringing along Pact Warrior #6 and Pact Mesmer #2 isn’t really all that interesting.

Honestly, I like being around the B-team more than Destiny’s Edge. You’re not just another hero of the group. You’re both the leader and the mentor. Of course they’re going to be annoying at times, but so were Destiny’s Edge with all their in-fighting. Right now, the player character has the most important job in every fantasy setting: passing on the torch to the next generation.

Also, unlike DE, this is a team that came together through some pretty messed-up situations, not because a few of them were jailed and made to fight in an arena. And it should be EXTREMELY difficult to judge the second team in the HoT story…since all the majority of the playerbase has seen is a chapter taken out of context.

I completed all the LW stories, so I am well aware of their place in the pantheon. I guess what’s tough to reconcile is the fact their level 80 characters who apparently have SOME kind of authority, yet have shown no competency. At least with the real Destiny’s Edge, they were highly skilled combatants and leaders among their races.
It’s not a deal-breaker, but I know I am not the only one who can’t stand them.

Being level 80 have a grand total of nothing at all to do with battle power in-lore. It is simply mechanics.

If we compared the LS group to DE at the same time (roughly two years into their group), they share the same importance. At the start Logan was just a scout, Rytlok was a soldier, Eir was a Norn (Norn have NO leaders), and Snaff and Zojja were just golemancers. The only one who could claim a position of importance was Caithe really.

They were highly skilled because they had YEARS of training, save for Zojja. That’s probably why Zojja let Taimi go along with us so much. Five years ago, she was WORSE than Taimi (in terms of experience and attitude). Logan, and Rytlok were both soldiers in armies in the middle of a war.

Think of it this way: How many times do you hear the Living Story guild bicker due solely to race? How many times have you heard Taimi call another member a bookah? This group is the evolution of Destiny’s Edge. That group came together despite the racial tensions of the day to prove that a united Tyria is a stronger Tyria. The Living Story group is the player character keeping that legacy alive. They could have only existed because Destiny’s Edge laid the path for them.

Now, I’m not saying you can subjectively like one more than the other. You don’t even have to like all of them (or any of them). But Destiny’s Edge was fully developed by the time we started playing. We just brought about the turning point and resolution to their story.

Good points, thank you for posting. Perhaps I should give it more time to see if they develop.

Just to echo the “don’t shove them down our throats” sentiment: I don’t even know who of any of those people the OP named are. Taimi I’ve never even heard of, and the rest I’m only familiar with in name because of items in the gem store. I have Rox’s quiver and bow, but otherwise I have absolutely no idea who/what this person is. Same with the others. Even though I hated aspects of the personal story, I at least liked that I knew what was going on. If the new xpac features this cast of characters that I’m not familiar with (and assumes prior familiarity) then that strikes me as problematic. I’ve been playing GW2 since the open betas, but I’ve taken numerous breaks and I’m largely a WvW player anyway, but if the new xpac storyline has me unable to understand what’s happening/been happening all on its own, I’d ask that this be considered more carefully. At the very least, consider adding some sort of review cinematic or something. I’m sure new players might appreciate this as well. I can imagine being thoroughly annoyed if the story presumes I have knowledge of events and people I’ve never participated in or seen.

@*xev*: To me it sounds like you havent played living world season 2 or 1. Those are when most of the “new DE” were introduced and fleshed out a bit more.

This makes me think Anet will either include some sort of in-game cinematic that summarizes what happened in living world season 1 and 2 or they will sell multiple box versions of the expansion where one box contains access to season 2 of the living world.

I say this because yeah from a new player’s perspective (or even a returning player from a long break who did not participate in living world) will find it jarring to go from the 1-80 personal story into HoT personal story.

So, can you please not shove them down our throats?

Why is this always the complaint? Who gives a flying kitten what NPC’s are or are not with you? Nobody’s forcing you to care about them. Just do the quests and move along to whatever content actually interests you.

Since this is their story, their “lore”, they want us to care.

Do we really need this kind of thread everyday?

I don’t know why people care so much about NPCs lol
I could have a random NPC tag along with me all day and I wouldn’t mind a little bit.

If you dont care, why do you read those threads and even post here?
Who are you to tell other ppl what should they care about?

Well just to state my opinion on the matter, it’s kind of hard for the devs to make their story and lore something you’d care about if they don’t put that lore and story into the forefront to draw you into wanting to know more.

This is why such threads pop up, for ppl disappointed with lore/characters to voice their opinions. One day maybe, just maybe, we will see an improvement
