So you announce a new expansion anet, and it looks great, I’ll give you that. But I see one problem: your base game is STILL broken. Why release a new story for us to play through, when the old story, the original story, is still in shambles? And don’t even give me “We’re trying to figure out how to fix it”. It’s been 5 months now since you changed things, you’ve said many times you have plans for it, yet now instead “Her’s an expansion!”. I will not be buying the expansion with the current story in the state it’s in, as how can I trust you’ll make the expansion have a good story when you’re so willing to let your orginal story be torn to shreds? Please, PLEASE, fix your base game before you throw an expansion at us.

real funny, but it’s true. the story is torn to shreds, there are glaring plot holes, it is no longer the story many know and enjoyed. instead of throwing an expansion at us and hoping we forget, why can’t they do a simply fix and put it all back in order?

i realize it could be fixed before it releases, in fact that’s my hope. i’m just trying to make my voice heard, and didn’t see a thread that i wouldn’t get infracted on for “derailing”. hopefully yes, they fix it before the expansion. however, 5 months should have been enough time to begin with, so i’m not too hopeful.

dude 5 months really? it has been freaking 2 and half year after release and they did nothing with final instance and final fight, which is everything it was promised want be. Boring as hell almost half of hour through broken and unfinished dungeon with “epic” fight in the end with elder dragon which is clearly smashing one button when u get to the turret. Cool huh? Don’t think so. And they did nothing to change that. If they don’t care so much about one of the most important elements in the game you can easily forget about them doing anything with current PS. We can only hope HoT will do it much much better then the base game did.

What’s broken from the story of the core game?

There will always be minor bugs in everything. It’s impossible to not get them all out.

I’d rather they spend more time developing new content, than fixing things I’ve done over and over.

They can fix any big glaring problems, but new content is more important to me than minor issues in the core game.

The missing chapter of the personal story that disappeared when they reshuffled the storyline for the NPE.

The My Greatest Fear chapter. It held some fairly major plot points so it’s pretty important that that gets worked back into the story. Either by reinserting the chapter or moving the plot points to other chapters.

The personal story (though okay) is not that important to me (other than a means to get good xp) I don’t understand why people make such a fuss about various things in this game when you look at the amount of content that’s in there, the amount of hours of work by many people, and for no subscription. Its a great game, good job Anet is what I say.

To be fair, from your perspective their fixes may be five months overdue, but there are also people who feel that an expansion has been overdue for more than a year. If we weigh both issues as equally important, I’d argue the people who have been waiting longer could do with some love first.

yes, this is true. however, if they hadn’t touched the story in the first place, this issue wouldn’t have shown up to begin with. i am not saying they shouldn’t be having an expansion, i’m saying they need to make sure the core story is fixed before they give us a new one.

@loam.2786: i am making such a fuss about it because its one of the things i enjoyed about the game. i enjoyed playing the story, i enjoyed fighting through the conflicts, through orr, hell i enjoyed fighting zhaitain. content does not equal enjoyment for everybody, some of us would rather a good story than sheer amount of stuff to do

Why did they remove the My Greatest Fear chapter anyway?

As far as we know because they wanted to condense it down to 8, roughly equal, chapters so something had to go and they picked that.

My best guess is they saw it as a largely self-contained ‘side quest’ that had little to do with the overall story and thought it’d have minimal impact. What they missed is that there are references to it in almost all of the later instances, which now make no sense. They also changed the order of the remaining chapters which caused similar problems.

For example our first mission after reaching Orr is to help Trahearne with his clensing ritual and during that instance (The Source of Orr) we meet many of the main characters of the later storylines for the first time. Where they thank us for their help and for our support in helping them get over the deaths of people we meet (alive and well) later on.

At one point later on (Temple of the Forgotten God) we go to get a briefing from Trahearne and he’s randomly talking about how you mustn’t blame yourself for the death of someone you’ve never even met, or heard of.

Eh… Let me say what is usually said to post complaining about stop doing A so you can do B.

People who do A are not doing B and they do not have to pull manpower from A to work on B so A can be worked on at the same time as B is worked on. I am pretty sure that The main story was ruined by B long after A had started working on Expansionpack so B can still work to fix what they did wrong while A is working on the Expac.

I’m not sure if you were talking about other stuff than the story, but it seems like that was your issue with it.
Some of us don’t care about story you know .. We just really want some new content.
Like every mmorpg out there have meh story. Go watch some Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad or play a Telltale game if you wan’t real quality story.
Even though the story has becomed a lot better in season 2, it will never be THAT good.
And what do you want them to do? Remake the story? The story have already been told. The only way to improve the story is to give us more.
Try to enjoy the other aspects of the game.
It is no news that mmorpg’s have bad storylines.

Hah. Do you really think ArenaNet is currently not on Panic Mode, trying desperately to get the entire studio* to work on the expansion, so it actually sells well and offsets their recent losses?

Define broken, I’m legitimately curious. In my opinion, the game wasn’t so much as broken as it just wasn’t thoroughly planned through, they couldn’t decide just what kind of game it was going to be. So I don’t feel it was broken at all so much as it was just not as great as what was promised.

That being said, since I was a fan of Guild Wars – this expansion and hopefully more to come, were just a long time coming. I’d have easily just opted for expansions that delved into more content of new areas (much like how they handled Season 2 LW) in large installments instead of bi-weekly events with some months worth of hiatus. While I think they have done quite well with Season 2, that isn’t saying much when you come from a predecessor that gave you an entire new continent, story, and content every six months… or so (GW:EN took a while).

With how much they delayed the game, I wish they released it now. Elder Scrolls Online has the form of combat I wanted to see in GW2. But, we have what we have now and they’re slowly generating new flavor into their game – GW2 isn’t a terrible game personally, it’s just a game full of missed opportunities.

City of Heroes was also shut down based on a business decision, not that it was actually losing money. Were one to go look at quarterly reports of NCSoft, after CoH:Freedom, they were generating a substantial amount of money. I’d almost wager it was comparative to TOR, who mind you – was ranked 3rd on the MMO board of 2014.

If they play their cards right and not rehash the Elder Dragons as the primary kittenes, we also still have Cantha and Elona we could revisit. I’d like to see more closer resemblances to GW1 though, a lot of the areas in GW2 just don’t feel as familiar as those same areas from GW1.

Ah, no.

The last 4 quarters of CoH, which 9 months is after it went F2P, it’s income was only 11,992 million KrW, roughly $10.6 million USD, for the year. In comparison GW2’s last reported quarter was 19,686 million KrW.

Basically the game couldn’t support Paragon Studio so when NCSOFT closed Paragon due to lack of any ideas that the mothership would approve, CoH was collateral damage. It may have had 50-100K paying players when it shut down but it wasn’t a lot in comparison to moderately successful MMOs that are still about then and now.

TOR went F2P when it’s annual income dropped below $100 million USD a year.

Considering how NCSoft owns ArenaNet, the GW2 devs would definitely be panicking if that’s true.

I think a few of the things in HoT should have been added to the base game. The precursor hunt should be a base game change. The system they had was awful and helped break the economy, why would you not try to fix that asap? The new WvW map and mechanics changes, same thing. In 2+ years you gave WvW what amounts to nothing to fix the problems that were there on day 1, yet you’ll stick it in the expansion because otherwise WvW players wouldn’t buy it. The same goes for the SPvP gamemode, that should have been added to the base game. A new class and Sub-classes when the game has had glacially slow and clueless balance passes?

The bottom line for me is that the support for GW2 after launch was incredibly sub-par. So many portions of the game were in disrepair and left to rot, but suddenly there are fixes in a paid expansion. It looks like a cash grab pure and simple. If I buy this expansion are they going to go back to not supporting the game in order to work on another paid expansion? If they are going to treat the expansion like they did the base game then I don’t see a point in buying it. Day 1 we will find out all the horrible design decisions they made and they won’t be fixed for 2-3 years until the next expansion, which of course will cost you!

to those saying i want them to stop doing the expansion and go fix the sotry: I’m NOT SAYING THAT. i’m saying they need to make sure they fix this as well as do the expansion. preferably, they would have fixed the PS by now, but since they haven’t they should fix it along with releasing the expansion.
@grayskull: i am not ungrateful, and im not trolling, they took a piece of the game that i enjoyed, the personal story, and took a cleaver to it and rearranged it so it makes no sense. i’m not asking for more, i’m asking for a return of something that already existed.
@chemiclord: i never begged or pleaded for an expansion, i was happy with the base game in fact, so don’t fit in your little idea
@zeefa: yes, thats exactly what i’m hoping for at this point, that they have people working on both. i understand that an expansion is wanted by most of the player base, i’m not saying drop the expansion in favor of fixing the old story, just do em both at the same time.
@hollow: yes, its f2p, yes, im free to move on and leave if i don’t like it. however, i’m staying in the hopes that things will get better in this game. also, this isn’t some baseless QQ, they tore apart the story, and even new players are going “wtf?” at the order of things.

Half of those games died because they were crap. The other half because the company mishandled the game from the start (looking at you, Sony, thanks for nothing for SWG). And one was due to fiscal mismanagement, something had to be chopped and CoH took the hit.

Not really a fair comparison since a bunch were not really top tier games as far as production goes.

WoW still carries on, as does EVE Online. Both of those games carry on just fine.

Both of them have multiple expansions.

GW2 will probably see a similar bump in active accounts as those two games do every time they release an expansion.

“Broken” implies that something about the game is physically preventing you from playing the game as it’s meant to be played. Is the story crashing your client? Is it stuck in an infinite loop? If not, don’t call it broken if you haven’t put in a bug report yet.
