So I was thinking about it and, one problem with the no new gear tier policy is that we have no big new numbers that other MMOs rely on to push players through. Now GW2 is not that type of game of course, but it means gear can’t just be new weapons and armor like other MMOs.

Now, it is cool that masteries may prove one thing that lets us feel progression. But it feels like loot seems continually useless, just fodder for the TP.

Having new skins we have to really work for, like the Luminecent, is a good start. When you see people rocking a full set, you know they’ve run a lot of Silverwastes and gotten through some of those annoying achievements to get it.

And of course, the new Precursor mastery along with the new Legendaries will provide something to work for.

But yeah, we sorely miss new exciting loot and I’m not entirely sure how to make that work while keeping the promise of no new gear-tiers around.

I’d like to see more trinkets and toys as drops, just little things that you give you some little fun ability you couldn’t do before.

Titles have actually been some fun to get, maybe something like a little logo to go next to your name to show the fruits of your labour for the harder challenges, like the star for World Completion.

If we got Polymock/Mini-Battles, it might just add some value to some mini drops out there.

Honestly, I know it’s forum poison, but we gotta at least acknowledge mounts and housing as typical solutions to this problem.

What do you think would be a good way to grant us players good loot, without resorting to a new gear tier?

Because going through “annoying achievements” surely is on the top of my list of things to admire…

I think having more options in one’s wardrobe is always a good thing. The difficulty though is that tastes vary widely.

For myself, I think the best armours in the game are the Sylvari racial ones. Some of the Arbor dungeon ones are ok too. And I really love the gem shop magitech medium armor skin. The crafted exotic heavy draconic (?) set is nice too.

But honestly I think most of the rest range from mediocre to dreadful. To me it looks like it’s been styled for the Asian market. That makes good business sense and I don’t mind it being in the game at all, but I’d never wear it. So there’s no incentive for me to get most of the game’s gear. As a general rule, the higher up it goes the uglier it gets. Legendary weapons are the prime example.

That’s one of the advantages of the mastery system. It’s not taste-specific.

But I agree it kind of sucks that loot is just fodder, not just for the tp but for salvage. It’s truly bizarre but nothing excites me half as much at the moment as getting level 80’ish green and blue cloth armour, cos that means a chance at silk.

Many would argue that isn’t a problem at all. New gear tier is simply a way to gate content from players – if they don’t have new gear, they aren’t going to be able to do the new content; the new Masteries system is a different way of gating content by forcing players to grind something else other than gear, except it’s not dictated by the iron fist of RNGesus.

What do you think would be a good way to grant us players good loot, without resorting to a new gear tier?

Increase variety and the effectiveness of various builds, so that more people will be encouraged to create alts of the same class with wildly different builds.

I had three pages of characters on Champions Online, which is around 39 characters, because there were so many different effective builds and gear combinations I could make; every piece of gear I got was worth something, I never sat there and thought “well, that’s a useless stat/stat combination” like I do in GW2 when I pick up Condition/Toughness/Healing Power (for example) gear.

Conversely in GW2 I only have 8 characters (one of each class) with two builds each (generally an offense-heavy power or condi build and a soldier build for events with structures that can’t be crit) and that pretty much all I will have until new classes are released; I have no incentive to create any more characters and thus any gear I find, even if they have good stats, are worthless to me (beyond their selling/salvaging value).

At least they are persistent.

Medium armour needs more trench-coats :P
