New solo content?
No doubt that the vast majority of the content in HoT is going to be soloable, just like how the base game is.
That’s not exactly what I meant. Let me try again.
Will there be any more challenging solo content?
I’m not sure about challenging, but if the living story continues to progress as it has, I imagine we’ll see more “Achievements to unlock after completing it” type deal.
I would like some solo challenging content though, much like Liadri.
Thief 80 | Elementalist 80 | Mesmer 80 | Necromancer 80 | Revenant TBA
I’m pretty sure HoT will come with a new personal story
Yes, please! More challenging solo content.
Of course that would be more difficult than the group challenging content
and would actually warrant a legendary armor reward.
Any new solo content coming? And No, LS doesn’t count.
Some of the masteries can be worked through challenges, some of which seem like solo content. Plus, most of the game can be done alone, without a party. I’m sure that will still be true going forward.
There will be story chapters. We don’t know how much there will be, or how far into the plot they will carry, because they don’t want to spoil anything and fair enough. There will also likely be a living world continuation of those events, but how quickly those start happening, who knows.
How difficult the story chapters will be is unknowable, but hopefully they will be moderate difficulty, similar to most of the story content so far, but perhaps with “challenge mote” options for those that enjoy that sort of thing. The default “get through the story to the end” should not be so hard that most players cannot solot it, but fully maxing out every option can be fairly difficult.
As for other soloable content, keep the “Adventures” in mind. They are new types of rapidly repeatable events, similar to Wildstar’s Challenges, and the ones I played were very difficult (out of gold/silver/bronze, the best I did was like 90% to silver, only about 50% to gold), and even if you do get gold, there is a leaderboard that allows you to compete against even better players.

What have you considered to be challenging solo content so far?
Give us a base line on what you consider to be challenging since that’s subjective. Some people find soloing dungeons to be easy. For me, it’s challenging. Challenging enough that I can’t do it at my skill level.
Did you play in the beta weekend? Those smokescales are no joke!

One word: adventures
The problem with challenging solo content is that it is even less accessible and harder to balance without relying on gimmicks. Challenging group content in comparison is only challenging to the group as a whole, rather to each individual and they don’t have to balance it with every profession in mind. It’s only a matter of time before people are carried through challenging group content, whereas for some people, they’ll never manage to complete challenging solo content without sharing their account.
The living story achievements were referred to as a hard mode, and the instances are designed for one person, but groups are allowed to trivialize it. This is intended to be challenging solo content, but there’s no reason to repeat it and groups greatly diminish its value.
Adventures could be challenging and they are for one person, but most of the challenge will likely be in competition with the leaderboards.

Well, that’s why they need to go two routes, either make the solo content use bundles to restrict everyone to the same kit, which adventures seems to do, OR offer alternate challenges that are balanced for different circumstances, but passing one of them is equivalent to passing all. So like maybe you could fight an enemy that is strong against power but weak against condi, which isn’t fair to power classes, but maybe there could also be a similar fight that is strong against condi but weak against power, and beating either gives you credit, fighting both is either impossible or at least provides no additional credit.

Well look, on the one hand they could always add optional achievements to the story mode stuff that require you to solo them to earn that achievement. Bring someone else in and it turns off. Personally I don’t like that idea. I don’t think you should have to solo, or get bonus rewards for soloing. I think that if you want to solo, solo. You have that choice, you aren’t forced to group it and the game does not have to give you any special recognition for soloing.
If you prefer to solo, solo, don’t complain that the game is not forcing you to do it.
It reminds me of all those people in other games whining that the game should offer a “hardcore mode” in which if they die, their character gets deleted. Well I’ve never once encountered an MMO in which it wasn’t possible for as player to do this himself if he was really interested in committing to the idea, no developer support is necessary beyond giving the player the option to delete his character at will.

This right here.^
Adventures are one of my most anticipated features of HoT after playing the last BWE.
Better keep new content focused on multiplayer, it is not a single player game after all.

I would instantly give you a +1 to just be always reminded of this thread, OP. But sadly, I can´t because people would probably think that I actually support this message and the question asked.
This may actually be my favorite question asked in MMOs.
“When do I get my next itch of SOLO content in my Massively Multiplayer Online game?”
Working as intended I guess…
Not sure why you don’t count the LS as challenging solo content. Some of those achievements are no joke.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
I can’t think of any challenging solo content. It was either really easy or just not possible (like soloing 5 man instances).
Adventures? What are they?
LS achievements? Are those the typical ANet achv, kill 1000 giants (when only 2 or 3 exist) or 1,000,000 yaks?
Can you name an mmo that has this? I honestly can’t name one. The closest i can think of is the WoW trial arena where you get Bronze, Silver and Gold in either tanking, healing or dps. And then again that simulates group content and is fairly easy.
I think SAB in this game quite counted, but that was really unique. Giving it’s popularity i guess that may come back after HoT.(maybe a jungle version :p?)
Don’t get me wrong, i do like some challenging solo gameplay, but i’ve never looked for it in an mmo. I don’t see how anyone would tbh.
I played WildStar during a hiatus from GW2. They said they had a large number of solo players (IIRC, they gave actual percentages), so they added a solo raid. Personally, I don’t think it was difficult enough to be called a raid, but I do know a lot of people struggled with getting gold reward.
FWIW, I just started the HoT beta story today. Ranged mobs come in packs of a half dozen and each hit in the upper 2K’s to the lower 4K’s. Bosses will 2-shot you. That’s harder than anything else I can remember in GW2.
GW2 was marketed to non MMO players. The catch phrase was like, “if you hate MMOs, you have to check out GW2”.

GW1 was pretty much a solo game.
Whether its designed for solo or not, I will solo it.

The LS achievements are things like this: https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gates_of_Maguuma_%28achievements%29 (if you scroll all the way down you can click on the achievements of the other LS episodes).
These are adventures: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Adventure

Over time, GW1 turned into a solo game. Heroes were a large part of that. Originally though, GW1 was designed as a gvg game.

Imagine taking on a Champion smokescale in solo content “shudders”
[DAWN] First Light Gaming – Blackgate
There are plenty of people that can solo dungeons. So step up.
Oh wait…the game isn’t supposed to be played solo.

GW1 was not an MMO. A fact many people forget when they bring it up. Not only that but the hero system and having everything instanced outside of public cities encouraged solo play.
As others have pointed out the LS2 achievements is great for solo play. From my experience in BWE1 & 2 the Adventures will fill this void and we can probably assume LS3 achievements as well. I also found running around VB by myself on a glass Daredevil and slightly drunk to be a risky affair;-)
4 New maps, Loads of adventures, New set of personal History, Masteries, Achievments.
There is content for solo playing.
Any new solo content coming? And No, LS doesn’t count.
If LS doesn’t count, the what other solo content is there? Serious question, I need something to do when I’m pressed for time.
