No exp, no loot, no point
So… what’s the incentive to actually stick with the event?
For the mobs that spawn during the event
The mobs which give no loot or exp?
those mobs?
Only the ones that infinitely respawn. The vast majority of events have mobs that give XP.

That hasn’t been my finding. About half of the events in TD and practically every one in DS spawns mobs – at set interval, so i assume related to event progression – that give nothing when killed. AB is patchy with them, and there are one or two in VB as well.
There are some where it’s understandable, where the mobs do actually spawn infinitely – skelk springs to mind – but i still think the solution is to limit mob spawns, not take away rewards entirely. The skelk event felt awesome to play with the huge waves of enemies which were rewarding to kill, and our group was actually trying to kill it (and succeeded, eventually).
Taking away the rewards turns it from an engaging experience into a chore. Oh look, the skelk adds are getting out of control, can someone get on that? thanks

I’ve done all meta event chains for VB, TD, and DS. The majority have mobs that give XP. When I say majority, I mean the upper 90 percent of them.
The endless spawning is part of the challenge for those that have that mechanic. It should not be removed.
Frankly, I haven’t noticed mobs that don’t give XP or loot but I can think of a reason they wouldn’t. You get enough of both through the completion of the events those mobs are in. I don’t really get the complaint .. what does it matter if the XP and loot come from the event or the mobs in them?
For argument’s sake, what would be wrong with receiving loot and XP from both the individual mobs killed and for a reward at the end of completing a given event successfully?
Nothing. But I don’t see the OP’s issue that even though you get XP and loot form the event, you don’t always get from mobs. To me that’s semantics.
It’s pretty simple. I get maybe 20k exp from an event – sometimes more, sometimes less. That event probably took me 10+ minutes to complete.
How many mobs can you kill in 10 minutes? with just a few small boosts active, i can easily get about 1k a mob, and probably make a handful of silver as well. Even at a fairly conservative kill rate, i’d pretty easily outstrip that 20k from the event and have some loot to show for it as well.
And then, just for kicks, lets tag the event at the very end of that 10min. Maybe i can’t get gold contribution, but i at least get bronze and i bet i could get silver for probably 15k exp.
So… what’s the incentive to actually stick with the event?
The fact that the event gives you the XP/loot. I mean, if event mobs don’t give XP/loot but the event does, your incivent to stick with the event is to get your reward for participating. Am I missing something here? Seem to me that if what you say is true, it’s actually SETUP to entice people to stay at the event.
So you would prefer to have no loot and just the event xp, rather than the loot/xp you could get from killing non-event mobs and the event xp?

Then you have somehow managed to have entirely the opposite experience from me. I wouldn’t go so far as to say 90%, but somewhere around 1/3 of all events seem to give no experience for killing the mobs spawned.
And i know it is part of the challenge. It is this design i am criticising, where you are offered a difficult challenge but offered no special rewards for overcoming it.
I guess my only recourse is to memorise which events are actually worth doing and leave the others to the poor people who don’t know better. That feels like toxic gameplay to me, though, and it’s sad to see it systematically encouraged.

Personally I think that tying the rewards to event completion is a reasonable solution to event mob farming interfering with event completion. But, “on kill,” triggers should occur even if a mob gives no loot or xp.
That said, I liked the idea put forward earlier that perhaps event mobs could give rewards for a limited time period during the event’s duration. Or perhaps a diminishing returns effect during the event duration.
Am I missing something here? Are you making real-world money off of loot? Cause if not, why does it kittening matter? You play games to kill time. You play games to have fun. Loot and exp are just bits on a server. What’s the big kittening deal? Why are you turning this into an optimization problem?
Are you serious? The primary reason to play games like these are the in-game rewards. Very few people play soley for the experience, and they are much more likely to quit after the first few times through.
The loot is what keeps people coming back.
Personally, I play for entertainments sake…I really don’t care whether or not a mob drops loot…I mean, yeah, I’ll see if there’s anything to pick up after I kill something, but I just move on to the next one if there isn’t…no skin off my back. People need to remember not to lump everyone playing a game in the same category, or that they all play it for the same reason, everyone has their own reason for playing.
So you would rather have no loot and just the event xp, than the loot/xp you could get from killing non-event mobs and the event xp?

All of the events in DS have mobs that award XP other than the blighted tower event. I should know as I was getting about 1.5M XP an hour with boosters leading up to that event. I was getting about 1M from the VB meta chains although I primarily farmed the Pact Encampment one up to the Sylvari part and then rushed over to finish up the Nobles one.
HoT maps are so unrewarding to play it’s depressing. Only way I make money there is from flax nodes but price in those are dropping every day so that won’t be good for very much longer. Past VB, most these events don’t give loot, exp, or good rewards at all. It kinda sucks.
Ya, I can go do an entire DS event, get 1/100th a level and around a golds worth of sellables for 2 hours or more worth of effort. Suffice to say, I don’t do DS no more.
Heck, I am back to farming cursed shore for money….I had thought I was done with that place years ago but apparently not. Guess they better nerf CS then!
I can play games for fun, sure but in the end GW2 is based around LOOT and the aquistion of GOLD to get nice things. There is no deep Bioware story telling here, it’s all bland and boring compared. So that leaves wanting me to get constant zaps to the brain when loot drops, that carrot on the stick I suppose to keep me going but currently HoT is not doing that for me. I can make more gold per hour farming newbie zones than HoT. Yay?

So you would prefer to have no loot and just the event xp, rather than the loot/xp you could get from killing non-event mobs and the event xp?
I don’t understand what this has to do with the thread. Getting the XP and loot for an event on event completion is a reasonable approach to ensure people contributing fully to the event get the most reward. To be honest with you, I haven’t actually encountered what you are talking about. I get tons of XP and loot, even if what you claim is true.
Truth is, if everyone was (an idiot) like me and spent a fair amount of RL money on a ton of cosmetic stuff, they wouldn’t need to be so mean with the loot.
Unfortunately, some people either can’t afford, or have no real interest in, cosmetic stuff.
So, apparently, we all have to be denied decent loot, to try to force us to spend (even more, in some cases) RL money.
I agree with it, in theory, because some people have virtually no real life money; so, the people with more, IRL, can (and probably should) subsidise the others.
But, we all know that some people aren’t poor at all – they are just extremely careful/mean with their money and/or don’t care what their chars look like.
So, us all being loot-starved, at least partly because of them, is not ideal.
I’ve said it before, but really what they probably should do is set a certain minimum limit, that they need people to spend (in RL money) on the game, for x amount of time, to make it healthy and profitable.
Then, after you reach certain increments, they give you better (i.e. more valuable) ingame loot, for the appropriate amount of time the money you have spent buys.
So, say they decided they needed $300 a year from us (I doubt they would need that much from everyone, but we have to assume some would still spend nothing).
Once you reached that amount, they could give you more rewards from playing for the next year.
Obviously, they would need to backdate this system to the start of the game.
So, say you’ve spent $600 since the start of the game, they could give you 2 years of better loot and so on.
Then, the people who couldn’t afford to spend any RL money and/or didn’t care about their char’s looks, could still play for free, as they do now.
Nothing would really change for them.
But the ones who do spend quite a lot, wouldn’t feel they had to either play too much, or poor endless amounts of RL money in, to get the few more cosmetic items they really wanted, over the next year, or whatever.
This system would not only be good for the players who have spent RL money; it would also, probably, be good for Anet.
As some of the people who have spent, say, $240 so far (and could afford it) might decide it was worth it to them to spend $60 more, in order to benefit from the scheme.
Obviously, this is all off the top of my head, so it might need fine tuning, but still.
The only two downsides I can really see are, firstly, that it might create a haves/have nots type of situation.
But, really, you already have that, with F2P and people running around in basic armour and with basic weapons, vs people running around with gemstore armour and legendaries.
The second possible issue is inflation, caused by more gold entering the economy.
Although, I’m not sure how much of an issue that would really be, as we already have gold entering from, real life money, gem to gold conversions.
More than anything, I think it would help retain people who spend (or who have spent) more on the game.
As there must be people who have spent quite a lot, but just can’t justify spending even more (in the shorter term, anyway) and don’t feel they are being fairly rewarded ingame either, so they stay away.
TL;DR: Consider rewarding people, who have spent a reasonable amount of money supporting the game, a little more in ingame loot/currency.

As if free to play wasn’t bad enough you now want a Chinese style premium membership? I’d burn my Rytlock statue and never look back.

Actually, I don’t really want it, at all.
What I want (or would have wanted, if I hadn’t spent a small fortune, already) is a sub.
But, if the alternative is everyone getting practically no loot, for fear of some people farming gold and then selling it, or keeping it for themselves (and refusing to spend a penny of RL money on the game), then I can’t think of any other solution, really?

Guess it’s not a big enough issue for ANet to care about fixing.

Well, games that have subs typically also charge for xpacs.
Or, at least, the most famous one does…
The sub is for the servers, to keep the game running and for ongoing (smaller) updates (patches etc.).
You can’t only pay for an xpac, once in a blue moon and expect that to cover everything.
Not saying you think that, obviously, but some people seem to.
I play the game, because (ATM) I want to play the game.

That’s actually a blatant falsehood, event mobs in SW did and do give exp/loot, it’s just not in the volume you’re expecting, so it appears as if they give no loot, but I can confirm from my own experience that they did drop loot on occasion, even if the percentage was negligible(I’d get loot from at least 2 – 4 mobs each event…but that “loot” included junk items…it’s all “loot” in the end).
As for HoT event mobs not dropping loot, I haven’t run across that problem yet…I get loot from all event mobs, maybe not the type of loot you’re expecting, but those junk items add up after a while.

No, event mobs in SW absolutely do not give exp or drop loot. You might be confused because there are usually some regular mobs mixed into the event area and you see some drops from them, but none of the mobs that specifically spawn for base defense events give exp or drop loot. Equip a weapon with a Bloodlust or other similar stacking sigil and count how many stacks you have at the end of an event.
You’ll be lucky if you have any.
Edit: apparently it’s been changed since I last did SW, because going back to check now does trigger Kill Effects. So it’s something that actually has been addressed, just not before I got tired of that map; prior to this change I had to go around killing mobs on the map to build up Bloodlust before going to defense events, otherwise I wouldn’t have any stacks.

Silverwastes defend event mobs do give exp and therefore on kill charges. Escort events and wandering mobs drop loot as expected. Vinewrath mobs are also exp-bare, presumably because they could be farmed? idk.
I have never seen loot drop from a mob that i can unambiguously say was associated with a defend event though.

Sure, link it if you want, but they can say what they like.
The truth is, they sell stuff to people in the gemstore.
So, that is, at least partly, how they make their money.
They didn’t just sell the base game and then live off that income alone, for almost three years, until this xpac was on pre-order.
If people spend a lot of money in the gemstore and then find they can’t make enough back ingame, they may get disillusioned with the entire game.
That is the problem, here.
BTW, was thinking about this and it occurred to me, that if we travelled back in time and were having a conversation re. how games should be paid for, 20 years ago or more, we would probably almost all agree that a sub would be the fairest way.
As, then, everyone would be paying the same.
However, back then, the gap between the rich and the poor (talking about in the West, here) wasn’t so extreme.
So, almost everyone who worked (or whose parent[s] worked) had (or had access to) at least some disposable income.
I think it is a very sad indictment on our times that we even have to discuss this, or wonder how games should be funded.

There is no point in playing HoT or WvW because of the xp / loot issues.
At this time HoT is a bust.
Leveling a Rev in the old world for now and playing other games while I wait for the devs to get a clue.

Not really. There are many sources for XP and you’re only focusing on the few that are not because they were exploitable.

Lol, don’t know where you got that nonsense from. I didn’t mention anything that was exploitable.
HoT is a grind fest without loot. Those are the facts.
It takes forever to get a level of xp all so you can buy more abilities that only work in HoT. And those abilities make it easier to get…. no loot.
In the past I would just WvW until the devs fixed things, but they screwed that up also.
Boring…

Lol, don’t know where you got that nonsense from. I didn’t mention anything that was exploitable.
HoT is a grind fest without loot. Those are the facts.
It takes forever to get a level of xp all so you can buy more abilities that only work in HoT. And those abilities make it easier to get…. no loot.
In the past I would just WvW until the devs fixed things, but they screwed that up also.
Boring…
The exploitable part were the events that spawn infinite mobs which is why they give no loot or XP.
It doesn’t take forever to gain mastery levels in HoT. You’re likely not killing anything and focusing solely on events.

You are right on the mastery levels. I spent 2 hours out in verdant brinks yesterday and was able to fully level out stealth training(from 0%-100%) now i dont have any mastery points to buy it with because ive used so many on other masterys ;-;
The loot and xp is fine, it’s just been moved away from mob farming and on to events and chests to encourage people to play the game in the intended manner (do events and explore) rather than in a way that the game isn’t designed around (farming mobs)
Loot is far better in the new zones. Do events>get currency/keys>buy keys>open chests.
GW2 was never designed around mob farming for loot. They just took out the parts that made people attempt sub-par methods of play like farming. You kill mobs because they help you progress events, or in self defense, not because they drop loot. You’re doing events and looking for chests to get the loot. The mobs are the obstacle, not the objective.

I love the personal story, but I did enjoy it more when I received loot from the mobs in them.
Loot is fun. shrugs
Lol, I love your assumptions, especially since they are always wrong.
HoT is a grind fest without loot. Those are the facts.
You can try to claim black is white all day but it doesn’t change the simple fact that playing HoT is boring and pointless.
I work for a living, GW1 and GW2 were great for people like me. HoT is for basement dwelling no lifers.
Fact. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Each of your facts are opinion, which of course you are entitled to. Opinion however does not transfer 1 to 1 from player to player. Just because you feel one way about something does not make it a fact. It is your opinion, which has been noted.

It was cool, I agree, but I’m pretty alright with the more interesting rewards they give for completing the steps now, and moving other rewards to challenge achievements so you’re more encouraged to do something different on replays rather than repeat the same instance on the same character.
The backpack collections and stuff like “here, pick one of the new sigils in a totally non-rng way” really made me not miss getting mob loot in story steps so much.

Didn’t they remove loot from stories after people farmed the one in Mount Maelstrom?
There is no point in playing HoT or WvW because of the xp / loot issues.
At this time HoT is a bust.

Without loot? Why are my bags always full after running DS or any large meta event chain? I’m starting to get the feeling that you haven’t actually played in the expansion maps because people do get quite a lot of experience and loot contrary to your belief that it’s the exact opposite.
And thanks for the insult to all players that play and enjoy HoT. Constructive.
Lol, more assumptions from you that again are all wrong. And also some “mis statements” too.
I didn’t have any issues soloing most of the maps, except the champs of course. Participated in most of the events in all of the maps. The loot drops suck and the xp rate is horrible.
I have 2 of my characters in HoT atm. One of them spent all weekend there. The other one just enough to get his elite masteries then I left out of complete and utter boredom. I haven’t taken any of my other characters to HoT because it’s just not fun or rewarding.
I would prefer to WvW but they screwed that up too.
I expect they will fix the drop rates eventually and the xp curve. They already made a lot of the content easier by relocating hero pts and changing some of the champs to vets. But I didn’t care about that, the content isn’t too hard, it’s just pointless and unrewarding.

This. I had to empty my bags three times in Verdant brinks last night because of how much loot i was getting, not just from the chests, but from the monsters i was killing.
Just from verdant brinks alone(bladed chest piece!!) i havent done much on the other maps, since launch
Im sitting at 4/6 gliding, 3/6 Itzel, 4/5 Exalted, and 4/6 Nuhoch.

It’s always been that way and I think it’s completely fine because SW is one of the top methods to making gold atm. Imagine if the mobs during events dropped loot? Profit level would be over 9000! I’ve been in SW for over a hundred hours already and I think it actually needs a nerf. Making thousands of gold there in simply a few months is nonsense.

It’s not slow to me, the mobs died fast. I soloed because I didn’t need a group for most of it. Mobs die fast if you know how to play and GW2 PvE has never been hard. And in the events there were plenty of people. You are just plain wrong.
And if you are saying you HAVE to be in a group to get loot for killing the same mob then that is just plain stupid design.

No. I maxed out all of my masteries late last week. I think I would know what gives experience and loot. It doesn’t matter you’re killing normal mobs faster. It’s still slower than with a large group of players to upscale it so more mobs spawn and scale up to veteran or elite (more XP per kill).
I’m not saying that you have to be in a group. It’s just more efficient. HoT is only grindy and boring because you are choosing to make it so.

You apparently think getting a backpack full of junk and blues is a great loot score. Get a clue.
You can get better loot and more of it in a shorter time period just playing the old game or doing the Holloween event. That content is much easier too, so much for risk/reward.

You seem very combative.
If you knew how mobs scale then you would realize that higher tiered ones reward more XP and more mobs spawn. This equates to more XP and shooting you well above what you would earn which is evidenced by your experienced compared to mine and others who did them in groups. I suggest you try doing them in groups.
Back back of blues and junk as loot. Weren’t you claiming earlier that they awarded no loot? We’ve gone from no loot to junk now. Yes, the Halloween farm awarded valuable items because of the new shoulder skin. There are other areas that award a higher gold per hour. The point of this thread isn’t about whether or not HoT maps provide the best gold per hour through direct gold or drops.

I already told you I participated in the events with plenty of people, enough that we had to taxi people in. The loot sucked.
You don’t want to admit that HoT sucks for xp and loot. That’s fine, if you like it then more power to you. But for everyone I play with we hate HoT because there is no reward for playing anymore.
It’s even worse in WvW, which I prefer to play and level in. But they screwed that up also.
HoT is pretty, the flying is fun and the music is awesome. But that doesn’t carry a game beyond a couple of days.

No. I maxed out all of my masteries late last week. I think I would know what gives experience and loot. It doesn’t matter you’re killing normal mobs faster. It’s still slower than with a large group of players to upscale it so more mobs spawn and scale up to veteran or elite (more XP per kill).
You assume you are the only one who knows how events scale. Get a clue.
You apparently think getting a backpack full of junk and blues is a great loot score. Get a clue.
You can get better loot and more of it in a shorter time period just playing the old game or doing the Holloween event. That content is much easier too, so much for risk/reward.
And the only reason to get xp in HoT is to get more abilites that make it easier to get to the to the loot that doesn’t exist in HoT. It’s a horrible design and they have already acknowledged that by the many changes they made in haste during the weekend.
HoT is a bust.
Thank you for your opinion on HoT.
The rest of HoT is a very boring waste of time. More work than play.
No you didn’t. You said you did the events solo.
So you changed your argument from no loot to loot that sucked. Is that your final stance or will it change again?
HoT provided great XP. Maybe not like CoF but still pretty amazing compared to the beta weekends. We’ve always received meh drops in open world and these are no different that in the core game. I don’t see why you’re using it against HoT when it was pretty prevalent before it except for a few notable farms.
You play the game and you get XP. You play the game doing various activities and such and you get mastery points. You play the game and you get map currency for rewards. It’s only work because you choose to make it such.
Boring…
The exploitable part were the events that spawn infinite mobs which is why they give no loot or XP.
It doesn’t take forever to gain mastery levels in HoT. You’re likely not killing anything and focusing solely on events.
HoT is for basement living no lifers.

Now you are just trying to defend the indefensible. The truth for most people is that HoT is a boring waste of time.

Or you were not clear enough. You claiming that you did things solo was pretty evident and clear in your posts. Nonetheless, others including myself have seen the opposite of what you are claiming. Are you even using XP buffs? And before you say it, no you do not need to buy them from the gem store.
Most people find HoT boring and a waste of time? Do you happen to have a source for this? Did you conduct an extensive survey this past week that I missed? Or are you assuming that your opinion is the correct one and that your experience is what others experienced otherwise they’re just making false assumptions as you so claim?
Check the meaning of participation and then reread my posts.

Check the meaning of solo. If I complete an event solo, wouldnt that mean I participated in it?
Loot is always a thing in any MMO like Guild Wars. I agree with people who argue the psychological worth for the lifespan of events – so many players flock to one or two places in the game where they can earn worthwhile loot, rather than playing everything in the game and making the whole world a more populated, interesting, and supportive place. It can’t cost Anet too much to add significantly more weapon/armor skins and make them drops/droppable by mobs or events (no balancing required), and the result would be twofold: 1) people would enjoy fighting random mobs and participating in events more, and 2) people would feel urged to buy bank/inventory slots from Anet. Win-win! Loot it general could also be made more valuable, but that would require some kind of budget from Anet; they’d need to find other aspects to add to the game that balance the shift of economy and make it change (a daily/weekly economy change mechanic due to NPC purchases/sales and supply/demand due to war effects could be quite interesting).
I’ve long thought that ascended crafting should have the option of items being guild-bound by their maker (this is Guild Wars, isn’t it?), where each guild prizes and pays its armorer/weaponsmith/etc in cash or materials, but since things like that don’t exist, players need to rely more on drops and personal crafting to get useful items. And that requires loot.

No. I maxed out all of my masteries late last week.
There is no way you maxed out your masteries last week unless you took advantage of some of the xp farming spots that have been changed, period.
Your posts seem to be nothing more than an attempt to look down your nose at players who chose to actually play the content and are now complaining because the rewards are reduced.
As of right now if you want loot/xp the best way is to intermittently hit events and spent the majority of your time on non-event mobs which I doubt is was the intent of the zone designers.

Nope. I gained most of my XP from Verdant Brink doing the Pact Encampment meta and then Dragon Stand.

In order to max all masteries, you kind of have to play most of the content. That’s what the mastery points kind of require you to do. There is some leeway as you can choose 19 mastery points that you don’t want to do.
I’m also not looking down on anyone. I’m correcting someone who is claiming that you can barely earn any XP and no loot (well terrible loot now that he changed his argument) which is not the case from my experience and others. You’re reading into my posts from something that isn’t even there.

The best way to get XP is from mobs. If you do them in with groups of people, kind of difficult not to in many cases, you’ll upscale the events so more mobs spawn and at higher levels (i.e. veterans & elites) providing even more XP. There are very few events that spawn mobs that do not give XP.
You are one of “those” people. You know what I meant by the statement you quoted. Taking it hyper literally is just a sad attempt on your part to troll even harder.
We get it, you like the grind, you like the lack of loot, you like trolling people who don’t live in a basement..
HoT is a grind fest that goes against everything the devs promised.
But there is hope. The old GW devs knew how to fix things they screwed up and make them better. I’m hoping the new set of devs and their egos aren’t totally blind to the failings of HoT and the correct fixes to improve the fun.
Making content easier is not the fix. Making it fun and not a grind is.
One of the first things they need to do is deal with all the different xp tracks. Separating them was a horrendous mistake. Simplify that immediately.
