Hello, I recently purchased HoT so I’m still kind of new. I decided to open some of the chests “Recovered Pale Reaver Chest” on a low level character to salvage the gear for crafting reasons, and to my surprise I got no gear at all from those chests when opening on a level 30 character. I did however get Airship Parts, but nothing else out of them. I had 20, and only opened 5 until I realized I was not getting any gear. I have farmed Silverwastes for bags to open on low level characters and so I am perplexed as to why this is happening with the HoT chest.

Is this some kind of bug? Is this a deliberate move by Anet for some reason? If so, why are the chests account-bound and openable on any level character? What gives?

The loot tables for those bags for lower levels was probably never populated (the game rolls to see what you get to match your level, and comes back with nothing). This could be by design.

As for why they are account bound, it’s probably closer to why would you make them soul bound. If they’re soul bound, it adds annoying restrictions such as not being able to put them in your bank as you’re going along, or wanting to open them up on another character who may have an empty inventory, allowing for better sorting, etc.

Interesting. The loot table never being populated seems plausible. Could be by design, or an oversight. Also surprised it was never brought up before? It is a shame though, that I cannot do HoT meta events/events if my intentions are to save the bags for lower level characters to open. I guess if I want to do that, I have no choice but to do Silverwastes instead of playing HoT content…

I would really enjoy being able to do new content instead though when wanting to get mats for crafting, rather than having to resort to old content.

Seems more likely this was just an oversight by Anet, considering they are account-bound, yet no loot table has been established for lower level characters. The end result clearly being empty bags of gear lol..

I found the same thing in the HoT areas. I got loot containers for doing events on the new maps. I gave them to my level 53 container opener char and found out they were empty.

It has come up before, some time ago, over in the Bugs sub-forum. It’s only those particular ‘Recovered’ chests. Other chests and champ bags (from HoT areas) work just fine with lower-level characters.

If you contact the CS Team, they will replace the chests for you. (They did for me.)

Dear Anet, will we get a fix for this?

It seems I get a lot of the masterwork quality chests, and they would be great to open on low level characters. I do not open champ bags on low level characters because presumably there are higher chances of exotic gear on an 80.

I also noticed, when I opened a few champ bags and bags of rare gear on low level, I got low level rares. I do not know if there was a change to that, but I seem to remember I got level 78-80 rares with those bags even on low level characters.

I’m much more interested to know if this is a bug or if it’s by design. I’ve got a bunch of these bags sitting in my storage, and would like to know if there’s a fix on the way or if they’re working as intended.

It must be a bug or an oversight. I mean, Anet wants more and more people to play in the HoT zones. So, making bags give no loot to low level characters discourages this very idea of playing in HoT zones and is contradicting.

Like I said, if I want to farm mats I’d LIKE to play the new zones and save the bags for a low level to open, but if they designed it so there is no loot, there is no reason to play VB over say Silverwastes for that intention of salvaging for materials.

That’s been the situation for a long time, but it has always been inconsistent as some bags scale to character lvl and some don’t.
I always open rare (yellow) bags with my lvl 80 as they generally have a high chance for a rare item, which I then salvage for ectos.
