From the sound it, you won’t have to “master” it.

You’ll still be able to use the mechanic to get around to the jungle top, but you won’t be as effective or have access to certain areas that people with mastery in it can get to.

No, you’ll need gliding to get across gaps you’ll also need other masteries to get around (to bounce on mushrooms, etc).

Nope. They said in one of the interviews that gliding would open up previously unreachable areas of the map.

That’s a new question, not your OP.

But no, you’ll need to glide to get to the jungle tops biome. But as I said, you do not need to master it. It’ll be something anyone can do.

Without mastering it however, it seems you won’t be able to reach every nook and cranny out there.

Mastery affords you secret places, shortcuts, and stuff like that that only people who decide to master it get access to.

Of course since when HoT comes out, every level beyond 80 gives you a mastery point, you can ultimately master everything given time.

So it’s a non-issue. Just a matter of what you want to sink your teeth into first.

Not quite. Mastery points come from specific activities or specific places. See this video for a good description of how the mastery system works: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=JlBFoHs_siY#t=175

Yeah, that confirms what I said. Leveling up in HoT will give you a mastery point in what your trying to level mastery wise, not a skill point like it works now.

How we get skill points is going to change.

Actually unlocking a mastery to master comes with playing the game, specific activity or place, like you said.

They’re not sure how they’re going to make tomes and skill scrolls deal with the new change, and the idea could change before launch.

Watching the video though, I’m thinking maybe I am wrong about how all characters can use basic versions of the glider, etc.

But I think for the demo, a higher level of mastery was used just to show off. It could still work at a basic level without needing mastery.

You probably won’t be able to do fancy stuff like randomly leap into the air and into glider mode like that without mastery training though.

But like finding a specific place in the jungle floor biome where you need to get to the top, that might be a place to unlock the glider mastery.

You won’t have trained it or anything since you just unlocked it, but for the purpose of getting to the next biome, you can probably get there from that point. Make sense?

I could be wrong.

It looks to me like the storyline, HoT zone “skill challenges” and possibly some other sources will give mastery points.

I remember hearing that post 80, with HoT you’d earn mastery points instead of skill points.

So my interpretation of that is this:
- at level 80
Two options:
1)“level up” as normal and gain a mastery point
2)select a mastery to train and exp bar becomes a mastery training progress bar.

It sounds like the latter may be something like n*level 80 exp to complete ( say n = 3, you’d need 3 tomes of knowledge to complete*).

  • As a possibility. I can see why this would need R&D time.

Gotta say I’m intrigued by it. I’ll still be hoarding writs of experience and tomes till HoT ( if nothing else, easy level of my rev and nothing else to do with them..) It does just sound like dual grind though (once for mastery points, twice for mastery training).

for #2 i believe masteries are also based on what zone or region you are in like you won’t get mastery points towards gliding in core tryia

not quite, it will let you level up your mastery track after you have put enough mastery points into it to unlock the next level. It does not give you a “mastery point.” You have to invest mastery points into the track before your exp can go towards it.

Yes, a bit like leveling up something in WvW. You still gain points on leveling.

What makes it different is that at a certain point your leveling bar will count to that end once you unlock the mastery.

That, and I’m hoping it’s not exactly like WvW, so that all the things can be realistically obtainable.

Unless you’re absolutely insane devoted to WvW, you’re forced to specialize in some mastery’s and miss out on others.

I hope HoT won’t be like that.

That might work for people who play tons of characters (they can make different characters do different things), but I don’t think everyone plays dozens of different characters… do they?

I don’t. I hope I’ll be able to reasonably achieve most things with my two characters.

It almost certainly won’t be exactly like WvW, because you will not gain points on leveling. From what I understand, leveling will just increase your skill in the mastery you are actively training. So, if you are training gliding, then leveling will increase your skill at gliding, it will not give you more mastery points.

It’s kind of the reverse of WvW, really. In WvW you level up to gain points to spend to increase your skill in various WvW abilities. With masteries, you spend points to gain the ability to level up in that mastery. You gain mastery points by doing other activities and exploring, not by leveling.

I’d say it’s a combination of PvP reward tracks and wvw. You select your ‘track’ aka mastery which you need to unlock yes I know, then gain exp for doing activities like wvw and it gives you ‘exp’ for that mastery as if it’s a track.

More or less what I said, you just make it sound more convoluted. Not that I’m doing so great at it myself.

I guess we’ll know better during PAX or during the closed betas.
