No more Sylvari in HoT?
The answer is: no, there’s been no confirmed, concrete and consolidated response from the devs about removing Sylvari as a playable race come HoT. It’s just people shooting the kitten, and some doing a bit of light trolling.
Was there something a dev said that wasnt very cleverly worded, like the "better get a level 80 sylvari for the xpac’ and now people go crazy because they think "kitten, better get that saladman suited up in case I wont be able to create one once the xpac is there?
Exactly.
A dev said something like “This is a good time to make a Sylvari”, but just that, the rest are just people going nuts over pretty much nothing.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
So whenever i enter one of the major cities, there are people discussing the ‘fact’ that we wont be able to create sylvari characters once hot hits store shelves.
I honestly cant, under no circumsdtances imagine anet doing a thing like that. So, aside from the trolls that just make up stuff as they go, where do people get that idea? People get the idea from the story of HoT. They think that because a few slyvari go mad they think all of them are going to be mad and that we will have to defeat Traherne because he’s gone mad. It’s just like how there’s a thread about a tengu in a WvW screencap and people are going mad because they think tengus will be a playable race in HoT even though the devs said no new races right now.
Just very bad lore on Anet’s part

I’m hoping for that bolded part… Only bit of story I’d actually be interested in.
Revenant deep dive had screen shots of a Sylvari Revenant, so I’m hoping that is enough to prove they will still be available. Also, abolishing new Sylvari characters makes as much sense as deleting our Sylvari characters.
The 1-80 personal story is set before Zhaitan died. Season 2 was set after that, and It’s been a mix of instanced stories and huge world things that only take place in level 80 zones. Season 1 was all over the world and until the final bit where Mordy woke, it could be reasonably set in a time leading up to Zhaitan’s death if that’s where you happened to be yourself. No one called you commander until after Scarlet died at least, and all the dragon lore in season 1 still didn’t deal with one of them dying.
They’ve been very clever about giving you a cohesive, linear story that you can encounter at your own pace throughout the open world content that’s been available to you. They couldn’t possibly wok themselves into a corner where they HAD TO dispose of an entire race and all the specific content that goes with it.

PCG: One of the big revelations at the end of episode eight was that the Sylvari were from Mordremoth. They’re corruptible. How are you progressing that given that they’re also a playable race?
Colin Johanson: You know, I think that’s a great question that we are looking forward to showing people when they get in and play the game. We don’t want to give away too much of that right now, other than to say that if people don’t have a Sylvari character yet, it’s a great time to make one and have one ready to go for Heart of Thorns. It’s really going to be an interesting experience, and a twist that a lot of players are really excited about what it could mean for the game.

I can’t imagine them not allowing new players to make Sylvari characters. For my part, I’d organise a riot to storm the ArenaNet offices if they tried that. I already have one of each prof but am not going to miss out on revenant.
The way I interpret what he said about “being ready” is that there’s going to be something interesting for max level (i.e. HoT content ready) Sylvari characters.
It will be like the GW2 beta event where people who died became the enemy and we had to fight them ;-)
I would say the comment about the Anet staff member saying something along the lines of ‘if you haven’t made a sylvari for HoT, you might want to’, I reckon will be just about having additional dialogue or something in the story.
I think sylvari characters might have a head start in knowing some sort of language from the creatures/NPCs in HoT too. Either that, or maybe they’ll do some weird animations as they go in-and-out of being controlled by Mordremoth. Who knows.
I doubt they’d make sylvari characters unplayable. Sure it would be interesting and out of the blue (like the destruction of Lions Arch), but imagine the rage about people not being able to take off their ascended/legendary stuff and put it on another character if sylvari became completely disabled/unplayable. I think that would deter players, which is something they don’t want, especially with an expansion trying to gain as many players as possible.

Well it wouldn’t so much be killing Trahearne so much as the story surrounding it. If Trahearne just pops out of nowhere and starts attacking you, it wouldn’t be very satisfying. However the story does hold the potential of the slow corruption of Trahearne and his inevitable fall into the claws of Mordy. Bonus points if they can actually get us to care a bit more about Trahearne before we have to kill him.

That’s the safe bet.
Since Commander is having a voice outside the cutsceenes I think it will mostly be different dialogue due to a lot of the pack being resentful towards the Sylvari.
I don’t think Anet would do something like remove the entire playable race.
If they do remove the option to make Sylvari characters for a while, that could be kinda bold and cool, but it should happen a little while after HoT release, as part of a living story update. That way Revenant Sylvari would still be possible for a while.

IMPOSSIBRU!!!
I’m making a slyvari reverent just to see how that opening story narrative looks. I bet it will make some of the crazy forum dwellers explode from rage.

Hah! My warrior ended up Asura specifically because there were raging forumites pre-launch expressing disgust that all races could be all professions when Asura are obviously too small to realistically be warriors.

I love the Asura 100 blades!
Its a dumb conversation. They wont remove a race. Btw the lore says the mother tree protected sylvaris and some of them corrupted because the pale tree is sick. But nothing to fear for the rest.
Just the WvW
R3200+
As if it isn’t blatantly obvious that, for the most part, the Pale Tree is free of the majority of Mordremoth’s corruption. That can’t be said about other sylvari trees. Most sylvari we deal with are those of the Pale Tree’s Dream. Any we fight are of the nightmare or trees that never broke free of Mordremoth’s influence. Nothing will happen to player sylvari.
I’d be all for getting rid of sylvari and making room for dwarves.
221 hours over 1,581 days of bank space/hot pve/lion’s arch afk and some wvw.
I’d be all for getting rid of sylvari and making room for dwarves.
Other than the petrified one in the Priory, they are all dead. Even the Mursaat had more reason to be alive than dwarves do, and we supposedly hunted the “last” of them down in GW1.

Such a poor imagination. Anything is possible in the world of fantasy and magic!

Imagination has nothing to do with it. They gave us lore. Unless there is some odd exception or retcon, the dwarve’s fate is literally written in stone. They are done.
Nothing will happen to player sylvari.
Having revealed their true origins, maybe Sylvari players get to explore that go a little dark side. With only one player faction they couldn’t go completely bad. At least not for good. But they’ve made a big point of revenants being a little bit bad too, channelling whichever legends – including outright evil ones – it takes to get the job done.
So there’s room on our side of the war for a little bit of dark side.
Possibly Sylvari players could get a story choice which involves becoming a bit corrupted. That could include changes to appearance and racial abilities.
Sylvari will remain Sylvari but more of them probably join the Nightmare Court which is obviously going to be fighting on Mordremoths side.
I honestly dont see why people would be confused since the Sylvari has had an evil side all along, just like the Asura have the Inquest, Norn have Sons of Svanir, Charr has the Flame Legion and Humans have… fancypants nobles.
I honestly dont see why people would be confused since the Sylvari has had an evil side all along….
If that’s directed at me I’m not unaware. It is different though. Up until recently bad Sylvari were viewed as the aberration from the norm but now we know it’s the other way around.
That’s potentially quite shocking. It wouldn’t bother me personally. If I learned that I was adopted and both my parents were serial killers I wouldn’t care. I’m me and who they are / were doesn’t change that.
But it’s the kind of news which could really shake up a lot of people and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Sylvari players getting the option to explore their dark roots in the expansion.
“You can’t trust Humans or Charr. They belong to Kralkatorrik now.”
Hope this puts the Sylvari haters in their place! ^ ^
I have to go with racism against sylvari’s. I was listening to audio with braham, in the personal story, with a pact leader, and it sounded like it did sound abit racist to sylvaris o.0. Make me furious, since i have a main as a sylvari, but yet, pulled into the game at the same time XD
Why would they remove Sylvari? I think people tend to forget that every race can be evil (Sons of Svanir, Inquest, etc) yet other races aren’t hated by some players…… What the kitten? -_- We are under the protection of the Pale Tree! We are not the Soundless, we are not the Nightmare Court, we are not evil and not corrupted. -_- We fight against Mordy just like the other races…
Has there ever been a game or MMO where they actually removed a playable race? That just feels like something you’d do to kitten off part of your playerbase.

Not once has been said that dwarves are dead. Once the they’ve turned to stone they can live much longer or almost indefinetly unless they are killed. Since most dwarves went to caverns to fight there is no way to say if they are dead or alive. Also remember there were two dominant factions of dwarves, some weren’t loyal to Jalis and there is good chance some haven’t followed him underground!
Edit: I do not remember how do dwarves reproduce. Are they carved or born but if they had children I doubt they would take them against destroyers
Stonehealer is currently last remaining KNOWN dwarf.
I’d wish if the character race pick looked bit more like:
(This is fake, found it on google year ago)
(edited by Nephziel.6053)
Every pther race can be currupted by the other dragons, and you are still wandering around. Its the same for the Silvari, and Ventari’s teachings give them a defense against the corruption.
The nightmare court are screwed, however.
Just goes to show how the mysterious Sylvari should have been left out as unplayable from the beginning and Tengu should have been the 5th race. Makes more sense.
I kind of like the idea of the Sylvari becoming unplayable to all but those already with characters created for a while. Just seeing as any Sylvari that are recently awoken might be unable to resist Mordremoth (its not quite the same as the other races evil part, those under the influence of Mordy would have no free will ). Just my thoughts.

That would seriously suck for anyone wanting to make a Sylvari revenant.

True, and I am considering making a Sylvari revenant. I just think it would be a bit interesting in terms of the story.

I wrote down in my idea notebook; make charr revenant, worst idea i could think of, going to make a human instead.
Removing or restricting play for a whole race in an mmo is just pure dumb..specially for new players.
The only thing i see them doing related to sylvari is just radically change the dialogue boxes u get with NPCs and (low chance) cutscenes. Don’t expect more because that would be, as i said, stupid.
Im figuring all sylvari will become the enemy. If you have a sylvari every non sylvari will see you as an enemy and vice verse, so you could be attacked anywhere even in cities, even by npc unless your at the sylvari home or base. Also you can attack any non sylvari, pve, www, etc. should make things interesting.
That would completely baffle and kitten off new players who don’t know what the f is happening. For us as oldschool players yea that would be fun and a bit of a twist…but u have to take in consideration the whole picture.

Wow, just wow. There is just no way. There will likely be special dialog for Sylvari that show distrust by other races. May be an extra mission option or two (they said they are going back to giving options), but nothing that changes the game dramatically. If they really did what you are proposing, they’d likely lose a LOT of players, including me. I don’t want to stop off to get stuff out of my bank, and then end up getting killed while managing my inventory.

When asked in another forum what race your Revenant will be, a dev said his choice was Sylvari because the glow is great on Revenant. Additionally, in a POI we saw Pop the Sylvari Revenant.
In the end, since Revenant is only in HoT this all but confirms they remain to be a playable race you can create at the launch of HoT.
Just very bad lore on Anet’s part
I feel that’s not quite true, but I do concede that if a Sylvari PC has the same conversation(s) and story branches as a non-Sylvari in the story mode of HoT it will be beyond “awkward”……
Now, if the story gives us a “decent” reason not all Sylvari become, “red eyed screaming ghouls”, that might be an out but I don’t see it not being “messy” for at least some period of time at the start of HoT story mode.
Outside of the Lore issues, does Race really matter at ALL in the mechanics of GW2 game-play? Beyond Aura being harder to SEE in PvP / WvW, or Norn/Charr having a tougher time in JPs, I can’t think of any.
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances

Can’t fault that logic!
Not that I expected them to be made unplayable, but I think puts that particular theory / concern to rest.
That would be like humans, asuran, norn, char, or every other race for that matter becoming unplayable because they could be corrupted by Zhaitan, the fact that something can occur doesn’t mean it always will, so yeah, SIlvari will still be playable.
Now what we truly need is to make Quaggan a playable race.
Lol I’m pretty sure they aren’t removing sylvari as the main hero is a sylvari.

The comment about people might want to make a Sylvari now has to do more with the HoT content is max level content. So if you wait until it launches to make one, you’ll have to level up before you can experience the content. The idea they would spring removing a playable race from the options without telling anyone first, is ridiculous.
What people who do have a max level Sylvari will find is a bit of a different experience from the other races. One of the main themes of HoT will be if they can be trusted or not and players will have a lot of chances to trust them or not. Plus there’s undoubtedly something which influences if a Sylvari is corrupted or not, which will be delved into. I mean it’s worth asking why some Sylvari feel drawn to the Nightmare Court and other do not. It is essentially the same thing.
