Non gem gliders (friendly request)
You answered the question in your last paragraph. You just have to add patience. I haven’t used a cent of real money in many many years except to buy HoT (waited patiently until a sale btw).
My request, or rather, a suggestion, would be to have an end goal rewarding 1 or 2 glider skins for ingame effort, rather than outright purchase.

What would be cool is to unlock a mastery themed glider for the next expansion and further released mastery tracks.

Yes, one of my friends is working on Ad Infinitum now. But they don’t look like normal gliders. My suggestion was more about having 1 or 2 better, but normal looking gliders. Ad Infinitum is a bunch of floating rocks and The Ascension is just a plain atrocity (no offense, anet) so I can’t blame my friends when they say those aren’t valid options when they just want a normal glider.
Normal gliders like: Classical, Shining Blade, Phoenix Kite, Ugly Wool, you know, a normal mechanical contraption with a cloth or solid surface. The gliders don’t have to be fancy, just normal, and slightly more sturdy looking than the basic glider.
There’s also the fact that the two backpack/glider things are LEGENDARIES. So yeah, practically impossible to get for more casual players. Casual friendly non-gemstore gliders please!
It would be a nice change of pace for the meta achievement reward for one of the LS episodes to be a glider instead of more gloves and helms.

If they were going to give one away, a retexture of an existing one would be the most likely approach. The SAB glider for example, they could have had an angry cloud variant for completing all of the achievements. At this point, the ending of season 3 would likely be the last chance to add one, assuming they transition to a new type of mount in the next expansion, then the cycle repeats.
They could try the carnival weapons approach again, selling a glider for around 200g (700 gems ~208g). Maybe one day they’ll do cultural gliders.
Would be really cool to have gliders for the 3 orders! And there’s already a good place for them as well. They could be handed out as rewards for completing the order backpacks. So say you finish the lightbringer’s pack collection, then instead of just getting the lightbringer’s pack, you get a chest that contains the lightbringers pack and an Order of Whispers glider in it as well.
All told, this would still only be 6 gliders available through regular play (1 of which is given to players), and they would all be fairly expensive to acquire since they would necessitate either finishing a legendary or spending hundreds of gold to complete one of the order armor collections.

I think it would be nice to have one for open PvE as well.
….gold is so easy to amass in this game…just play efficiently and u can have the gold for a glider combo really fast. Besides they would never make a glider cool enough to compete with the gem store ones otherwise it defeats the purpose of selling gliders for gems altogether.

I don’t agree that it’s “really fast” to get enough gold to change for gems for a glider. Not everyone likes to grind either.

Too be fair, The Ascension is very simple to acquire, you play ranked games during the season and win X times on each class, doesn’t matter what rating u are. It can very casually be crafted, not to mention a decent chunk of gold to purchase t6 mats with by the time you complete the achievements, essentially allowing you craft the back piece upon completing the achievements. But I agree that more content should be added into the game via achievement than simply purchasing it.

Except not everyone is good enough at PvP to win matches. I know for a fact that whenever I play PvP, my team is carrying me and I’m 99% sure i’m the downfall of any matches we lose. That’s just the simple truth. I suck at PvP. It’s not casually acquireable for those who can’t PvP.

Luckily, that doesn’t matter. As any win on any class you play, counts toward the progression. So you can be free to win or lose as much as you want, every win (no matter how close) puts you 1 step closer to the backpiece, and you can play as many matches per day as you would like. Benefit being, you also accrue shards toward Ascended gear at the same time. There is a reason why many Bronze Gods have the backpiece, while being the lowest rating division, because it does not require skill to achieve, you invest the time, and unless you are at a 100% loss rate, you will eventually craft the backpiece.
Casual =/= bad , Casual = relaxed and unconcerned

Well luckily for you, you now don’t have to win very many matches to get the backpack, but winning matches would make it more enjoyable. You do still have to win some, but not too many.
it wouldnt hurt anyone to see a glider as a rare drop from a raidboss or an open world boss or a fractal boss or ab wvw lord or a pvp box or w/e
Going by the game’s logic a glider drop from bosses wouldnt be anywhere near good store gliders, which means most people wouldnt even use them to begin with. And the rest of the people that have it will all be gliding around with the same kitten glider instead of the default kitten glider.
Let’s be real, this is never gonna happen.
In my opinion Anet is gone too far. There are a kitten ton of gliders and only 3 are (2 of those legendary!) are skins you can get in game. There is not a single fancy glider you can get via achievements or as a drop from a (raid-)boss. The soul river for example would have been perfectly fit as a rare drop from Gorseval – a missed opportunity!
One thin I loved in WoW is to find and collect mounts via achievements, special boss drops etc. It motivated me a lot. And in GW2 you are left with buying stupid gems for 99% of all the skins. A shame.
