Pretty much. Instead of giving valid reasons as to why this small expansion is worth $50, they just convey how great a game it is, so we just need to blindly support them.

No one I’ve told about this has said, “I gotta rush out and get this!”

In fact, the reaction has been a universal “Wow, that’s a really lousy deal for the existing players.”

Until the entire player base posts to a forum, the actual percentage for or against anything discussed on the forums is based on guesswork.

I understand people voicing concerns. I feel badly for those who are unable to communicate those concerns. Not all the deficiencies in communication are on the players side.

I actually really enjoyed Wildstar. The end game was where it fell apart. I loved the cities, the quests, the characters, the paths. I thought it was generally very fun. I just dont like raiding (at least when not when its the only thing there was at end game)

strangely enough, i’m feeling it for both sides, i’m trying to see anets side too in the challenges they face with today’s market and having to please investors, that can be pressure.

I’m just trying to find the point in time when they stopped trusting us to just buy stuff and support them, and instead thought more about marketing and statistics ?
where exactly in time did we stop being friends ?

i’m guessing it’s quota’s – you have to consider how fast the gaming and 3d market is changing, and the costs of keeping and maintaining those servers.

but seriously, if they just put out regular expansions for affordable prices, I’d buy them knowing it keeps them safe and us entertained ….less the questionable marketing.

ok, so the gem store wasn’t enough – yall do great work, just keep the expansions coming like every 6 – 12 months.

Soooo much of this +1

Off the top of my head, 3 events come to mind:

  • When the other founders and hold-over krew from GW1 quit
  • When ArenaNet moved into their new multi-million dollar HQ we bought them
  • When Nexon and krew got involved

I still cannot believe players aren’t down at AN HQ with torches and pitchforks. They didn’t finish Guild vs Guild in the core game GUILD WARS 2, let alone the ending, and then 3 years later are charging players $ for it.

That’s the equivalent of a Star Trek game charging you extra to use warp drive, or a Star Wars game charging you extra to use a light saber.

And instead of rioting, a lot of players are CELEBRATING this fact.

I think that no one has been kittened, insulted yes, devalued maybe but there is no indication tat Veteran players cannot just open a new account thus allowing them to get the same benefits as others.

Value wise no I don’t see what has been shown is worth what they are currently asking for, maybe for the bundle yeah.

Also I hope there is some sort of apologize from ANet about the FAQ and for the lack of tact when it came to wording their comments about new players being valued and not paying homage to the Veteran players. This and the fact that they are taking so long to rekindle communication.

Also there should be apology from the community as well there has been alot of distasteful reactions.

Supposedly when they hired a new monetization manager to run their marketing in late 2012. Let’s see what happened after that: Introduction of ascended grind-or buy-gems; Attempt to charge 300 g per commander tag color; Attempt to force customers to only buy gems in preset amounts; Discontinuing full armor sets in the gem store in favor of the more quickly and easily produced (thus more profitable) outfits; Not providing a character slot with HoT Standard knowing very well the majority of the players will have to buy one.

Do you think an expansion every year is sustainable? Or even healthy? Considering the amount of content desired in an expansion, do you think adding 5+ maps every year wouldn’t create a bloat of unused zones or adding a class + specializations for each profession wouldn’t cause balancing issues?

actually no, I don’t……the living stories were like expansions – they could have bundled them to sell for low prices. While they gave them away for free, that doesn’t help fund the company to be self sustaining.

Rather than give those away free, just package them at a lower affordable price so you don’t have to play catch up on one main expansion.

Further on the living stories, I wanted to play more of them…….but they came and ended so fast , I felt overwhelmed with the game already having to catch up on ascended, the new areas, the new events – so as cool as they thought it was to give me a ton of new content, what they did was overwhelm me…..It got to a point that i actually feel relief when events are over. But now they can’t be played again. Had it been an expansion, I would have just purchased them and played them at my own pace – they would have gotten paid for their work, I wouldn’t have missed out on a timed event and they wouldn’t have to play catch up because they did all those timed events for free.

so i respectfully disagree with your assessment because they were already expanding the game in those stories.

how many living events did we have in one year ? 3 ? 3 story events for 30 dollars wouldn’t be unfair imo, all while giving me a chance to play them at my own pace and get items I wouldn’t otherwise be able to get because the event ended before I could finish it.

Not to mention the fact that the gem store exists to support the game and new content creation, but they completely abandoned the living story and large updates in favor of the expansion. So we’re basically paying for it twice.
They’ve managed to continue with gem store updates in spite of it though. <_<

While there are some that believe that Anet shall not be questioned for they are our lord and savior, there are others, like myself, who think that there are valid reasons for the expansion being priced at this point IF the following occurs, and I have a suspicion it might:

1) Unlike GW1, GW2 has shown a B2P model where not all of the content is released all at once. Whether you consider Living World, Silverwastes, Dry Top, Southsun Cove, etc. to be “free” or paid, it hardly matters. These things did not come out with the base game and were added later as a bonus to people playing the game. In the case of LWS1, only people who were playing it at the time get to benefit from its existence and people like me are waiting for its return through the fractals or some such method. Undoubtedly, while HoT is not starting out with a lot in terms of map area, they will certainly be adding more maps, with more events, more bosses, more jumping puzzles, and more “challenging content” (I’ll get to this in #2). Consider this particular expansion as the beginning of the expedition deeper into the jungle. What is the full extent of the content by the end of HoT? The entire area west of Metrica Province/Rata Sum is the Maguuma Jungle, and it is pretty big. If they develop all of that eventually, then I would bet hardly anybody would be complaining.

2) The challenging content. We don’t know what this is just yet. I really hope they announce it soon because it’s been the carrot on a stick for many people. They hired former raid and dungeon designers to work on whatever this is, so we are getting some form of end game progression, hopefully actually challenging, which is what the community has been dying for ever since level 50 fractals have become a breeze for more than just a handful of players.

3) Ignoring the map, what else do we get? Many would, rightly so, argue that the remaining things we get are not worth $50, but outside of the context of an expanding jungle is really only where this makes sense. HoT players get access to a new class and 9 elite specs, Guild halls that are non-instanced and exist in the world (outside of the Verdant Brink too), gliding (which I’ve heard is quite fun even by itself), precursor crafting, etc. for example. This is adding a huge variety to classes we already play, and it’s turning the meta on its head in some cases. They also incorporated a new PvP mode/map (hopefully more to follow, we’ll see) and a revamps WvW map that has a lot of new mechanics. These are put in for people even without HoT. They could have locked these behind the expansion too, but they didn’t. Maybe that’s their fault and that shouldn’t be considered, but it is something they are doing so that the PvP/WvW community doesn’t get split into the haves vs. have nots.

There are plenty of reasons why people defend this. Ignore the people who think Anet is some god and can’t be wrong, but don’t ignore people who do have valid points.

look, you can’t fault them for trying to create a sustainable business model.

My problem is that they are not considering the user side as much as they should be.

This could have been avoided, had they simply made smaller packages for lower prices through out the 3 years they waited to put out an expansion.

Judging from the price, if this is “my” beloved original gw team, they are just trying to keep up with the books…..Not take advantage.

unfortunately catching up with the books, is making them look like they are taking advantage. I’m not ready to believe that they are sinister like that …..

clumsy maybe, making hip shot decisions without consideration of the impacts, maybe …..but not evil. You can’t make such a great game if you are evil, evil is something exclusive to the marketing department lol :p

fire the marketing guy, put his head on a stick show it on the forum and everyone is happy again lol

I am not sure about that.
I am see a lot of post for the “Stay calm and just pay up” camp. I am also not sure why they are so interested in this topic because it really does not effect them. The group that feels cheated has a stake in this, and the other side does not lose anything either way.
But, I want to thanks them for keeping this issue alive.
