Now that we've seen (part of) Mordremoth...

…what do you guys think of the direction they went in? Do you like the whole “made of vines” thing? Do you think that it’s just an avatar? His actual body? Only partially grown like the Mordrem in the beginning of the trailer? How does he measure up to Zhaitan in looks?

It appears to be his avatar (you can see him build it before they cut to the M. Guard). Based on the avatar’s looks, I am pretty excited. It’s very big and intimidating and I like the purple glow. I was actually a bit surprised to hear him speak, and very clearly at that. Granted, we know the dragons are intelligent and capable of speech. Zhaitan was probably too rotten or wasn’t interested in taunting us (and at the point where we meet him he is weakened and probably in WTFWTFWTFWTF panic mode).
I like everything about Mordremoth more than anything about Zhaitan. He was the least interesting of all of the Elder Dragons to me.

I think what we’ve seen is “a” body, but not the ONLY body he has. As the Elder Dragon of mind, it’s not unreasonable to think that he might control several at once. Five, I’d guess.
I liked what I saw, but I doubt it’s going to be as simple as the fight against Z was.
I believe the thing thing that was being built was the Mordrem Guard itself….and at the end, that is definitely Elder Dragon huge. They even cut back to a wide view to give you the scale of how big Mordremoth actually is….Rytlock and Co. looked like ants in that view.
I believe we only saw part of mordey though because you can see a “talon” crushing a rock but the part of mordey we see at the end has no talons.

Actually, I think that goes against what we’re supposed to know about them so far. Until now, they’ve been shown as more animalistic, just raw forces of nature and destruction. With Zhaitan, it was his underlings that were smart and thought for him, which is part of the reason why he was able to be taken down like that at the end. We didn’t just starve him, we lobotomized him by cutting him off from his smart minions.
Mordremoth is the dragon of mind, though, and he may be able to think for himself more than the others can. If he gains the knowledge of any sylvari he corrupts, then he’ll know all about us and the world at large already. I’m sure he’ll want to exchange a few words with the people that killed Zhaitan, and be smart enough to use an avatar when he does so.

Hmm, you’re right. I was just thinking of Glint, but she was tampered with by the Forgotten iirc and is also just a champion.

I don’t think it’s the guard being built. The construct in the cave has the same sinewy appearance and a similar face to the one that stares down Rytlock (they may not be the same) while the guard has a plated, boney look and teeth. I do agree that we haven’t seen Mordy proper. You get a glimpse of what appears to be a wing-like structure in the cave, along with him breaking the rock, though.

Yes, that’s why I wrote “just a champion” after I was corrected.

May as well post my theory:
What we saw was a partially grown version of him. He can deconstruct and regrow himself at will. The Mordrem what we saw regrown at the beginning appeared to start off as a mass of vines that solidified into a bark-like skin. What we saw in the trailer was Mordremoth’s head starting to take shape, with his body unformed. It’s a good compromise between keeping it a total surprise and spoiling his full form. His fully grown body will have the bark-like Mordrem skin covered in vines, and may or may not be rooted to the ground.

Or we couldn’t hear Zhaitan speak because we don’t have undead characters? Only reason we can hear Mordremoth is because we have dragon minion characters, if we were allowed to make Frostbrood or Branded characters we’d probably hear Jormag and Kralkatorrik as well.
That aside, Mordremoth might not even be “speaking”. It’s presented to us as words, but that’s probably because there’s no other way for ANet to really describe a dragon trying to impose its will on our characters.

It definitely is building the Mordrem Guard at the start.
My favourite part is “I am this world, you are a part of me, it is time to come home.” Elton John zooms in on his piano THE CIIIIRCLE OF LIIIFE. Yes your bodies WILL become the grass!!!
PS. Loved Mord wasn’t fleshy or “dragon” shaped.

I love it!
He seems so threatening and imposing. The voice feels spot on and I really like that he seems to be so much more than the original design of the dragons.

I liked the design, it was absolutely not what I was expecting but it was a nice surprise. I don’t know if he is big enough though, but that may just be because a lot of him was in the canyon, not shown. I will have to watch the trailer again and judge his size compared to teq or the shatterer for example. For the actual look of him though (assuming that was mordremoth himself, which I believe it was) I am very impressed that they went for the ‘made of vines’ look rather than the traditional ‘dragon’ look.

He is a plant, just light him on fire and give us another expansion in six weeks.

If it’s just his Avatar then they can turn him into zone wide boss like Triple Worm where a few times a day you have to stop him from full manifesting before killing him for good either at the end of the PS or LS3.
Um…where did you see this?
It’s the HoT Launch Trailer, check the threads on that for the YouTube link.

Actually the developers have stated that all the dragons can speak and are in fact more intelligent than mortals can even comprehend, they’re basically gods, just not the nice kind.
They don’t normally speak to us though, because the dragons consider themselves so far above the mortal races as to have no reason to ever communicate with us. It’d be like an exterminator talking with ants. However I’m betting that changed when we killed Zhaitan, now we’re a threat, and we’re going to hear Mordremoth and the other dragons speak a lot more often.

Really? Crud, I hate being wrong on stuff like this.
Do you have a link to where they said it? I want to see/hear/read it so I’ll know if they gave any other important details that I’ve missed.

I thought the dragons were originally designed to be like “forces of nature” and not necessarily intelligent. If so then that has obviously changed with Mordremoth.

Well something to remember when thinking about Mordremoth which was slipped in (quite easy to miss) was he is the Dragon of Nature and Mind – so the communication could be unique to him.

We know from vanilla Guild Wars 2 and the Edge of Destiny novel that the Elder Dragons do have personalities and desires and that they happen to be incredibly selfish from what we can see; it’s just that in game this hasn’t been directly stated per se until Mordremoth and is a “read between the lines and how the minions reflect their dragon master” kind of thing. The “force of nature” reference is simply the common races of Tyria trying to comprehend the vast powers of the Elder Dragons and likening them to natural catastrophes, but the dragons aren’t mindless beasts and they act for a reason in a very malevolent manner. For a more detailed analysis with some examples to support this statement, see my post on the subject here (the first half of the post is relevant to this Elder Dragon discussion).
Also, based on the dev comments during Twitchcon, it appears that the “Mordremoth” we saw in the launch trailer may not in fact be the Elder Dragon per se but an avatar of sorts. This would fit with Mordy’s earlier depiction in the ending cinematic of Living World Season 1 where we see part of his snout and he appears more reptilian there. It’s possible, though, that this Mordy was merely an early concept and the real deal will indeed be more plant-y, but time will tell what his finalized look will end up being. After all, Zhaitan went through a few concepts until Anet settled on his current eldritch look.
apparently the devs said in the stream thats not mordemoth, just one of his champions
apparently the devs said in the stream thats not mordemoth, just one of his champions
this is correct
they referenced to it as a “large vine monster”
