No. Somebody paid for the gems you exchanged the gold for. That’s why they let us trade gold for gems. They get money either way.

If they did that, the exchange rate would spike to a point you wouldn’t be able to realistically afford it. If you really want to buy the expansion with gold however, you can. Simply become a gold seller. You can even sell to them.
