I was in WoW when The Burning Crusade hit. That expansion was worth $50 and then some. New races, mounts, a slew of new zones and dungeons, and I’m not including the patches which brought the Zul’Aman. Asking $50 for HoT which has content that from all appearances is 75% less than The Burning Crusade is nonsensical. You’re comparing apples to oranges.

They are both MMORPGs with the same concept with a different theme and business model. Not Apple nor Oranges it’s a software not a fruit.

Apples and oranges indeed. WoW… I’ve never even played that game, so I can’t comment on anything wow related. The other games I play, though, offer ‘expansions’ either entirely for free (both sub games and f2p ones) or at 1/5 of the cost of HoT. And the original Guild Wars expansions were both cheaper and offered more content (and free character slots, where relevant).

Talk about the generosity only to be loathed by so much ungratefulness.

I am sure ANet was anticipating the obvious outcry Blizzard had when they announced their plan.

I’m new here but I need to understand something. Why does Blizzard or World of Warcraft even get brought up. It doesn’t matter what WoW does compared to anything..

WoW is a game with a sub and not a non sub retail game that requires one purchase. It’s not the same and shouldn’t be compared. Wow is one of the only exceptions in the industry to be able to pull off a sub model extremely successfully and for many years. Most companies who try to make a subscription based game end up going free to play, take Wildstar as a shining recent example. Most games are moving toward free 2 play. Some good models and bad. Comparing this game to WoW is crazy, it’s not the same pay model at all. If you want to compare it to MMO games that are similar compare it to Crowfall, ESO, Elite: Dangerous and EVE Online.

While I’ll admit GW2 is a decent game (or I wouldn’t be playing it, with or without long breaks), I don’t really find it all that amazing. I’ve actually played better. Though please keep in mind I prefer full-on world PVP, without artificial population limits, and complex crafting, the type you’d get in EQ2 and SWG. And that I positively loathe dungeons/fractals.

As to value over time for another 3 years… I REALLY REALLY doubt it after seeing what’s in beta so far.
- I think the map verticality is a gimmick, not ‘extra value’ in itself.
- I am not encouraged by the statement we’ll get 3-5 more maps total. That’s really not all that much for the price.
- I couldn’t care less about specializations.
- I hate grinds, and the idea of grinding for precursors/specializations/masteries doesn’t exactly fill me with joy

In fact, I’ve been having problems with the direction the game is going in for a while now. I burned out on SW and Drytop pretty fast: got what achievements I could and went back to other stuff. I am physically unable to get a bunch of the special storyline achievements (too much twitch). And what I saw from the beta is more of the same.

Your mileage may vary. Either way, ANet won’t get another penny out of me till they add some content I find worthwhile paying for.

Oh: and I’d probably have bought HoT anyway if they’d just added another character slot. Not doing so was pretty much the last straw.

I’d have paid $40 if the character slot was included without a second thought. Or not much at least. While I want to support a game that I like, I’m not paying 50 for how little they appear to be offering, nor for something where I need to pay another 10 anyway.
Point being, if they didn’t decide to gouge us that little bit more, they’d have made more profit and their name wouldn’t have been so mucked up.

1. Stop comparing to sub games, we do get a lot LESS content than some sub games. Features? maybe not, depends. Content? Definitely less. Please stop trying to white knight for that at least. You are being just as much a whiner as some arguing against you.

2. The cash shop is ‘optional’ enough for them to make more than enough from it. If you compare this to GW:EN which was the first expansion they did, it was MUCH cheaper and had a lot in it, and that didn’t need a gem store too. Funny that.

3. Goodwill being shown to new players while expecting players who are not new to pay the same high price tag with no benefit with goodwill at all, that is bad practice. You treat your customers equally or don’t have customers. EVERY SINGLE COMPANY knows that! It’s called customer retention.

4. Anets continuing silence on this has made this much worse. The price is still high for any expansion which is going to have much less than a full game which retails at the same price.

5. Anet got caught with shady marketing practice that gives people other causes for concern. Your defense of that only proves that you really are either arguing for argument’s sake or you really are comfortable arguing for a company that clearly committed a shady practice and has it’s head in the sand over it, regarding the recent discount to bundle/faq change.

6. We do not owe Anet any loyalty either as just as we gave them cash via the gem store and pre-ordered, gave them lip service, helped out their new players, reported bugs and suggested the changes that they are now making etc

7. A WoD pre-purchase got you a free level 90 also, which basically benefited both new, returning and current players. So please do not even TRY to say ‘look that was $50 too’, it gave a benefit that usually costs $60 bundled with a pre-purchase, and the standard version STILL includes that free boost.

8. Looks like you are still carrying on with that patronising attitude of yours too. It won’t get you anywhere except making people more annoyed at you.

9. Some of the very features going into this expansion are features that were meant to come at launch, like GvG and Guild Halls. So a lot of it is already promised material for cash paid also. It is not our fault Anet are deadline shy.

Please show me how I can access the gem store armors, weapons, account upgrades, character slots, utility boosters, toys and minis without using the gem store?

You claim it is optional, yet I can’t find out how to access this content without the gemstore. it seems to be required for the majority of the content.

My $15 other mmo sub includes all these items, so I know I am getting them.

Also it is funny how you only mention the most expensive MMO here, yet leave out the majority of the reasonably priced ones… See SWTOR, Wildstar, LOTRO, EvE., etc…

And of course you mention price only and don’t discuss content/price which would look really really bad for gw2…

Sorry but you do not have to pay monthly sub on EVE, if you can collect the amount to buy a PLEX with ingame currency.
Also EVE online core game price is 7.50£ = 12$ (Steam) +30days free

A new player on EVE can start buying PLEX after 4-5 months, by doing mining, lvl4 or lvl5 missions, PvP raids, PvE raids etc
A player on EVE needs to spend all lot of time to lvl his toon in order to be competitive.
GW2 compare to EVE, is like comparing a sheep to a wolf.

I was playing 5 years EVE, I stopped when GW2 released, not because of the monthly sub, I spend similar amount on gems but because is a different game, with a nice community.

Therefore you can not compare every game sub or no sub with GW2.

Talk about the generosity only to be loathed by so much ungratefulness.

I am sure ANet was anticipating the obvious outcry Blizzard had when they announced their plan.

Anyone who have read the forums could have seen this coming. It’s like all of ArenaNets updates. While they were all free, they weren’t all met with much gratefulness just because they were free. People demanded content to meet their standards.

Now with an added pricetag, people become even more critical than they have been before. Just imagine, that all of living story has been free and people complained LOADS about that. Now you have somewhat the same prospect, except they added a pricetag. Of course you get loads of complaints about that as well. Not to mention the great amount of complaints on this forum of there even BEING a paid expansion at all!

Then again, You’re a person who calls people who paid for their gems not very smart. They basically sustained the game and supported the game. It’s not very smart to just dismiss that. You can’t say the gemstore as a whole was optional for ArenaNet. They NEEDED to make money on that. Some people paid nothing, others paid thousands. It’s not just generosity, it’s also a business plan to cash in money from the gemstore sales.

That said, it does feel like the expansion price feels sorts of a long overdue subscription payment, rather than paying for content you actually get. Especially due to the nature of the expansion being “half free” because of updates to existing systems.

You’re basically supporting the future development of the game, rather than buying a big content update. So people react like: “I wasn’t really playing that much anymore and was basically waiting for a load more content to come out. This expansion is supposed to be that. But it’s mostly features instead. I think I’ll wait until they reveal and give alot more maps to play in rather than to re-do stuff again and again.”

Of course what many have said is that the price isn’t the problem, it’s the lack of consideration given to veteran players. Oh and btw, for anyone who has played the game for a while, the price tag for many will actually be $60 because they will buy a character slot to play the exp.

$60 is too much for an expansion whether there is a subscription or not. Anet didn’t go with a non-subscription pay model because they were trying to be kind, it’s because they didn’t think it could be sustained, so quit acting like it was some kind of gift to their fans.

Really?
Ask for a refund?

ANet already said they would help anyone out who just bought the core game and would like to make the change to a HoT pre-purchase.

So since price for GW2 base game dropped to $29.99, $10.00, and now $0 I should ask for my money back too?

Deal is a deal right?

They do not make refunds/upgrades.

Anyway I love how some guys are comparing their 3 years of gameplay to those who have purchased HoT just a few weeks ago.
