We do not have the expansion and are considering getting it. I enjoy PVE a lot, and look forward to exploring new areas and seeing the new story. I don’t do dungeons, Fractals or PVP though.

Our current level 80 characters are: Warrior, Necro, Ranger, Guardian, Engineer. With only Orr as a comparison (where we do OK), will these characters be able to survive OK, PVE-wise, in HOT, or will we need to do some expensive upgrading? Most of these characters are in full exotic gear right now.

Thanks

You don’t need an upgrade but HoT maps are harder than Orr.

Those classes and exotic means that you can do fine. HoT is intended to be more difficult PvE content, even in open world. You may have to adjust the stats of your gear, traits, utility skills, and/or weapon types. This was intended design with HoT, that you would have to think before encounters, not just equip whatever and go through it. That being said, player skill can make a large difference in one’s experience of the content.

If you go into Verrant Brink with a standard zerk anything that you don’t really know how to play, but instead expect to beat to death anything that you come in contact with? You will probably die alot at first.

It’s probably best to start these maps with a class you’re both very familiar with and that has at least a fair amount of toughness and/or vitality.

As a test, down the cliff from the first VB waypoint (after you’ve done the first chapter of the story) is a swarm of Pocket Raptors. Ask anyone who’s fought Mordemoth, a swarm of Pocket Raptor are way worse. If you can survive that first chapter of the story and the first nest of ankle biters in VB, you shouldn’t need to tweak your build until you get close to the Auric Basin portal. At which point you should be at or close to your elite spec which will make setting the pocket raptor ablaze and dancing on their corpses much much more satisfying.
