Dearest Anet,
As a fervent player of your game, I’m really excited about what the expansion has to offer and all your announcements.
Still, I’m fearing that like in other MMOs, raiding might leave a large portion of the community behind.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m honestly glad hardcore content is coming for players who want to experience this kind of stuff ; I myself loved raiding back in the days. It’s totally fine if those players get their hands on great stuff (especially since in Gw2 it’s mostly aesthetics, achievements and titles).
But what I fear is that a whole portion of the storyline will be locked behind raids. I don’t want to get into the Maguuma jungle and really get involved into the story, if the most important bits of it are only unlocked by doing 10 man instances. Who hasn’t already played a MMO, doing all the side quests of an area, getting really involved into the story, only to discover that to enjoy its conclusion, you had to go through a time-consuming horribly-repetitive raid content ?
In the core game, you managed to get around this problem by providing a personal storyline and a story mode for dungeons, which allowed more casual oriented players to actually enjoy the story without having to get through difficult and time consuming content.
Since I think it’s quite obvious there can’t be a “story mode raid”, I hope all the important events will be happening in the living world. Especially the potential fight against Mordremoth. Please leave all the story elements in the living world.
He’s part of the main story, why would they do that? Especially considering the player base they know they have.
he will most likly end in an solo/living Story dungeon like Zhaitan/the shadow of the dragon

The story of the raids is completely separated from the main story. It will take place after the story of Hot. Raids are completely optional.
I would like it more if it was a raid, like I said in another thread, they should remake Zhaitan as a raid boss, everyone hated the fight because it was a huge let down (like seriously you just spam 1 non stop to kill a 400ft Elder Dragon with cannons wtf), and if Mordremoth is a living story instance, it will be just as bad as the Zhaitan fight…
Edit: They could also make a portion of the fight instanced (most likely the important one) like they did with Scarlet, and some kind of stuff to skip the Raid (you could skip the fight on the ship with the spinal blade backpack), for casual players.

Agreed. You would think this one would be a no brainer, but now I’m not so sure. . .
Considering all the hate they got when they made the final story mission a 5 man dungeon which has now been changed, I doubt they will make the final story instance a raid.
Absolutely nothing to worry about, the shift went on the other direction: zaitan is part of the personal story ending, which was in turn tired to a dungeon, so they changed it so it could be soloed.

Because they locked the final mission of the personal story behind a dungeon for almost 3 years? His concern is legit, even if it doesn’t happen.

Very legit. It didn’t even occur to me that could be a possibility, but now I wonder.

Maybe the reason they said we won’t fight Mordremoth at release is because they are making a raid for it.
I’d love to have 2 version of Mordremoth, one in a story instance and one in a raid, because let’s face it the Zhaitan fight was an epic failure because it was worse than a dungeon fight. If they recreate the Zhaitan fight in a raid it would be way more appropriate for a fight with an Elder Dragon.
So maybe having both would be better. One just for the story of it, and another to actually feel like fighting an Elder Dragon
wait…where was it said we won’t fight Mordremoth at release? I don’t remember that being confirmed

It’s pretty likely. If we were going to get an imminent Dragon fight, you can bet Anet would be using it in their teasers. So far we’ve seen a lot of minions and lore bombs incoming but nothing to suggest a massive fight at the end of this.
It’s also worth noting that, for whatever reason, they dropped the ball in a heroic fashion with the Zaihtan showdown. They should be allowed to take all the time they need to get Mordremoth correct.
It will make up for the flop of Big Z and also show that, yes, it might take a decade to get through all the dragons, but they can deliver when they have the room to do so.

Lol, suddenly your place on the hype train does not look so comfy anymore?^^
Even the stuff yesterday has not brought me away from the idea that Anet had basically nothing beside maybe the first episodes of ls3 when they started with HoT and were doggy paddling mid air for all the time with being forced to sit everyone and his dog on HoT instead of giving smaller content like they planned to do with ls3.
The didn’t show Zhaitan at all before GW2 release. They did use him in a trailer for the game, but that trailer didn’t release until about a month after the game.
I’m pretty confident Mordremoth dies in this expansions story. There is no way the story of Mordremoth lasts 2 living world seasons + expansion + more living world seasons.
I’m pretty sure Mordremoth dies, and then we’ll see another elder dragon attack Tyria somewhere leaving an awesome cliffhanger, and then living world will start setting up the next elder dragon to fight in the next expansion

There’s an art of a huge 3 headed dragon attacking Lion’s Arch by causing a massive tidal wave, that’s probably the Deap Sea Elder Dragon.
It is hard to think how they’ll go about the Modremoth showdown. I hated how we killed Zhaitan, and I can’t see them making us dispatch Modremoth solo like we do in Living Story missions. A raid honestly feels like the only outlet that would do the character justice since you obviously can’t make it an open world event that will run forever. It’d be mean to future players to make it a limited time only thing too. I want Modremoth’s battle to be huge, epic, and difficult. Something memorable to make up for Zhaitan.

“buffed: Sind Raids verpflichtend, um die Haupt-Story abzuschließen?
Arenanet: Nein, Raids sind durch und durch optional. Raids verfügen über eine seperate Story, die einsetzt, nachdem die Hauptgeschichte in Heart of Thorns abgeschlossen ist."
Buffed: Are raids mandatory to complete the main story?
Arenanet: No, raids are completely optional. Raids have a separate story that starts after the main story of Heart of Thorns ends.

Now this is good news. Thanks for providing the info
