Why not open a new thread and ask for levels to be removed completely? Because kitten grind…
Given the number of us planning to pop a level 20 scroll and 60 level up tomes in the first 90 seconds after our first Revenant gets out of the tutorial, I don’t think we need a thread for that — it’s already the case .
No thanks.
We already have character-bound-hunting with traits. And character bound skills too. I have absolutely no interest in yet another character-bound system that would just mean I have to replay X amount of content to get back to where I started.
This. Having to endlessly regrind old content for each character does not constitute ‘replyability’. If the content is good gameplay and makes you want to do it again for the fun of it….that’s replayability. I think worming these pve masteries like wvw masteries will be great.
Yup.

I’m glad most people are in favor of account bound masteries

And then you use another 80 or so level up tomes and the masteries are finished, too. So where’s the problem?

You think that everyone has enough scrolls/tomes to instantly max out masteries on more than 8 characters? If tomes even level masteries that is.

You’re assuming that tomes will level up masteries. They probably will not, the same way that they don’t give PVP Ranks or World Experience at the moment, they’re separate systems.
Saying that the experience bar will change to a mastery training bar once you hit level 80 doesn’t mean that masteries will behave the same way that experience does now.

You think masteries should be instantly maxed out when HoT is released?
Seeing as masteries are ANet’s way of raising the level cap without invalidating our current gear or making us overpowered on the old maps, it makes only sense that you require about as much exp to level in HoT, as you did to level in the normal game.

Nope, and never did I claim it should. I doubt tomes would level masteries at all.

I think they will. Even if it’s not intended, it will be a bug that can be used during the first 3 hours after patch. They might even not fix it at all and call it an uninteded feature. We know ANet by now.

We will see how it goes.
I have 18 character slots, with more than half of them occupied by 80s.
Arenanet can either choose to reward and encourage a player who has dropped a not inconsiderable amount of money on them for character slots or they can discourage that behavior by making ‘re-mastering’ every character individually a massive drudgery festival that ensures I’d never buy another slot again.
It might not serve others well, but their plan serves me well, and I’m the type of player handing them real cashy money.

My suspicion, based on how WXP works and some comments by the Devs is that the new leveling bar will build mastery points (and tomes will do this too) BUT we will have to undertake certain tasks to unlock tracks to spend those points in. So you might blow a pile of tome to amass 600 points on day one, but you’ll still need to go out and find the tasks that give you the ability to spend those points.
I’m as curious to see how it works as anyone, but I can easily imagine a system of locks and tasks that creates appeal for many while not being an instantaneous blowout for a few.

Since they said that there will be no more skill points gained by leveling after reaching level 80 and since exp is tied to skill points, it’s possible that level 80s will no longer gain exp from doing content and that the mastery bar will only be progressed by doing content that gives mastery points (sort of like achievement points).
The tomes may only work below level 80 then since they give exp and a skill point for a level gained.

No, definitely not.

The last few posts prove that most people posting here didn’t even read the information that ANet released on masteries. I can as well talk to a wall. A discussion is only possible if everyone has read the information that is being discussed.

Through Masteries, players who’ve reached level 80 will have the opportunity to continue their journey by acquiring powerful new abilities for their entire account.
Masteries award account-wide abilities and bonuses.
Every Mastery you invest in will bring new benefits to all of the characters on your account.
Masteries have the flexibility to both take us to new places and revisit our old favorites, and since the Mastery system provides account-based progression, new characters are always welcome.

I think he was more refering to this part of the blog post.
How Do I Get Masteries?
The ability to train Masteries is unlocked at level 80 for all players that own Heart of Thorns. When this ability is unlocked, your character’s experience bar will change to become a Mastery training bar while in PvE zones. This bar will track your progress on training the Mastery track you currently have selected, showing both the abilities you are training toward and those already earned from the track. To see all your Mastery tracks, spend Mastery points, and change which Mastery you are currently training.
Training as in exping moving it forward in pve zones

The first quotes still don’t clarify wether leveling masteries would be account bound (bringing benefits, etc could still refer to unlocks), but the last quote pretty much leaves no room for speculations. Everything about masteries will be account-bound.
Guess I didn’t read that part carefully enough because it seemed to be only important for following expansions. You actually disprooved my statement from a few posts ago, so congratulations. You won the argument.
