Q:
Possible reclass option?
I feel like the effort that would have to be put into this isn’t something they’d want to do… and even if they did, I don’t see how they’d be able to reclass to different armor classes and such.
But what do I know, I don’t develop for Anet. perhaps after they’ve finished the xpac they could introduce it.
You were not even able to change your primary class in GW1, so getting it here is doubtful. And that was for more than just technical reasons.
With the trait systems, personal storylines etc in place I don’t think this will ever be viable. I don’t have a reference but at some point I believe I read “there will not be race/class changes in game and they aren’t planning on adding them at this point”. Feel free to correct or add the reference if you find it.
Since they marketed the revenant as a class everyone old and new would be on equal footing when starting expansion ei lvl 1.
I dont see how that can be maintained and give old players the ability to transmog a lvl 80 can you?
Well, to counterbalance a bit:
“It wasn’t possible in GW1”
It also wasn’t possible to play Charr in GW1. This isn’t GW1.
“It cannot be done because of personal storylines”
Correct me if I’m wrong, but in which personal storyline does it ever rely on your class choice? You have your background, your sires, your drunken escapades, your lifelong dreams and asuran colleges, but class, as far as I remember, never factors into personal story.
“How could they reclass into different armor”
Easily, it wouldn’t be the first time the game would strip you down to your undies without your approval. Adjusting the armor set with it would be welcome and in my opinion not impossible, but not mandatory.
“Previous statements of ‘There will be nots’”
Let me kindly remind you one of said previous statements was “There will not be an expansion.”
But yes, I’m fully aware of this being semi-complicated to implement, and it may be selfish of me that I don’t want to sacrifice an existing character to create the very same from scratch with the very same name and appearance and having to replay their personal story all over again when it could be solved by a convenience item. Consider it a voice that expresses a wish rather than a question then.
Why not just us a name change on the first character then recreate the character with a new slot and use the previous name?
Rytlock did it.

The devs NEVER said there would not be an expansion, all they said was that content would be released in 2 week updates. I don’t think they should do this simply because the dev time to do this is better spent somewhere else. Sure they could make money on an item like that but the whiplash from the player base for an item like that isnt worth it. Again all in my opinion.
I’d like a reclass token myself but I’d also like a re-race token because at the end of the day we really are just playing a game here there should be an option to change these things without destroying all of the progress we’ve made thus far and having to start over.
Really? This game has the fastest leveling experience I’ve ever played. First charactor took me 4 days to 80, granted I played the crap out of it. Second charactor I completed I 1 sitting thanks to eotm karma train. Also we constantly get tomes of Knowledge and I’ve never seen one but there are Skip to level 20 tomes as well. I doubt if they put in these items they would put in a reclass token.
There is a re-class option, it’s called “Tome of Knowledge.”
This would be cool and really annoying at the same time for me. On one hand, I could save myself the Revenant grind. On the other, I would’ve wasted my time hoarding tomes of knowledge for my new Revenant.

Unless of course they gave you piles of tomes of knowledge from simply logging in… oh wait…
…I can already see a queue of people wanting to level their warriors and guardians to 80, only to switch them then to Mesmers.
(no, thank you)
Remember, remember, 15th of November
The only characters who have ever shown the ability to change their primary profession in GW1 and GW2 have been Rytlock, Keiran, and Razah.
Rytlock jumped into the Mists and it can be presumed went on some kind of grand adventure in the Mists to get his sword back. While he was there, he gained the ability to channel the Mists and once he returned to Tyria he has been using this ability.
Keiran started out as a Ranger and through his journey back to the Eye of the North interacted with other characters and gradually changed his primary profession over time and eventually became a Paragon.
Razah is a Mists entity and can change its profession at will.
For a player to change profession, they’d have to do a very personal adventure alone. Or be a Mists entity. And since the focus of Guild Wars 2 storytelling seems to not be upon personal exploration for the player character, this will not happen. The closest thing that players will get are specializations, which are essentially evolutions of their original profession but separate.
Along with the fact that changing primary profession completely just wouldn’t work with the game structure and introduces a number of problems technically.
Because leveling in this game is so hard.
also your progress is made account wide mostly, except for world completion, fractal level and few other things I probably don’t remember, so you don’t loose so much when creating new character…

true there world completion is a char bound but fractal level have been account awhile.
not sure it is much else then the soulbound exotics
Meh, this item request is just another “I’m super lazy” item. So many things in this game are already account bound, so creating a new character is hardly “starting fresh”.
I don’t know about you guys, but i’ve probably used almost 100 tomes of knowledge already and still have about 140. Leveling in this game is SUPER QUICK AND EASY.
Heck, ascended armor, weapons, and trinkets are even account bound now (lol).
The only thing you are really losing is waypoint unlocks, but that is quick and easy to get back too.
1) Make a new toon
2) Make it look exactly like your current toon
3) Insta level it to 80
4) Use a couple of your thousands of skill point scrolls to unlock remaining skills
5) Use old armor (if possible) and trinkets. (since you want to switch to revenant, you will be unable to use your armor either way if you aren’t heavy).
Tada! You just changed your class!
Anet in the past has said this isn’t possible. Due to technical reasons and issues with how your story lines up, it wasn’t possible. Could things have changed in the past year or two since they said that? Maybe, but not likely.
My plan is to get the Identity kit and change my current character first. Then recreate with the same name and looks a Revenant. I might use another hair though…
Then hit the stack of tomes.
If ANet can spare the man hours, I think they should add this option, along with race change. Charge real cash for it would be good too, although I suppose a case could be made for gems.
More money for ANet is always good.

A case can always be made for gems when it comes to in-game features. So far they’ve been quite reliable about that too, and it has given us many additional goals to keep us playing.
I hope GW2 will have class change when out of combat just like switching second classes in GW1 and for free of course. Or even just limit it to change within the armor classes.
FFIV has this.
ff14 you can have all classes on same character cant you and since gw2 dident go that route why should they add this now? reloging to a dif character dont take forever and dont kick you out of parties.
Edit
Why is C.h.a.r kittened?
(edited by Linken.6345)
Okay, most of you completely miss several points here.
Yes, you can make another character. Yes, it’s not a problem. But some of us are into roleplays and continuity. We don’t want just a character who looks the same, we want them to BE the same. To keep on ticking when you go for that old /age tag in chat.
“Why should this be available when you can just…” Why should you be able to change your appearance and gender? Just make another character! And intalevel it! Ohwait, we have the Black Lion appearance change tools.
I can say this has nothing to do with laziness for me. I already have multiple characters, I enjoy levelling in the game, my roster has a blank slate so I can from time to time start a “gaming” toon, just for fun to level it up again and delete it, I don’t need it to instalevel anything (by the way, that sort of cuts off one of the previous arguments “we wan’t everyone to start the same – level 1” when you yourself admit that old players can use a cheaty scroll to get to 80 in two minutes).
The reason I asked is simple – the revenant class was INTRODUCED in a class change, not by a new character. And I know, I know, being NPC special snowflake and having priviledges… but still.
And once more – class has nothing to do with storyline, it doesn’t interfere with it. Yes, race cannot be changed, origin cannot be changed, order cannot be changed (changes anyway due to bugs, tee hee), but class plays absolutely no role in personal story, just like your appearance or gender, it’s merely technical. So I ask again, why not? (besides the rather oxymoron-ish “don’t be lazy, use a cheatyscroll to instalevel”)
We are talking about Anet here, they want you to pay for another character slot. These are the same guys that charge 1800 gems for a transfer but only gives you the option to buy 1600 & 800 (or a larger amount of course) they are a business, they want the money grab.

Have tried the button that let you type in exatly what you want eh?
@OP: I don’t think I’ve ever seen any MMORPG introduce a re-class option unless it was in the game or planned to be in the game from the get-go. The technical reason is really the only reason needed and you already acknowledge that yourself.
I understand your wish though, I do think it would be cool to be able to have a character switch classes, but only through some long or hard journey. But again I think the game needs to be designed before launch with this in mind, just like FF11 and FF14 to name a few MMORPGs that do have this option.

Your Cute, I’m talking about purchasing Gems with real money, not trading for your pixel gold.
Do try and keep up.

Well you could do that or the gold way I said or chase 10k ap and buy the char slot with the free gems
i would like to see a re-class gem store item, i have a warrior that has been sitting around doing nothing, it would be a nice dream but i doubt it would happen. If the devs wanted they could do it, but it seems like it would be very difficult. i do agree that leveling another character isn’t very hard its just time consuming and no one wants to deal with the NPE the way it is.
Guild Wars 2: waiting for content simulator.
Awe man… I wish. I’d switch my Ranger for the shiny new rev.
Back in WoW, with the advent of Death Knights as a “Hero Class” I thought it would be cool if you HAD to sacrifice another character in order to make one, complete with your new DK retaining some modified skills of your former class, but as others have pointed out…you’d really have to design a game from the ground up with that in mind, and it would probably be a horrible idea for them to introduce profession switching now (especially with their tendency to half-kitten several of their ideas).
So no, hate this suggestion. Create a new character. Some of us are already stock piling Tomes of Knowledge for the occasion.
Isn’t part of leveling learning your class?
Insta revs would be a terrible idea. In the same way insta90’s was for WoW.
As is already said, use a slot, learn the class by leveling. Then you might not be that pain the kitten that doesn’t know their class in a raid.
Levelling as learning your class and fun? It very much used to be. Now, with nonsensical level locking and the horrible thing the trait system has become (not talking about the division by 5 of the points, just the way it unlocks via extortion, pretty much = “do this horribly boring thing a sixth time over OR dish out gold, your choice, player”) it not only teaches you next to nothing, it punishes you for being anything under at least level 60, but ideally 80.
After levelling my newest charr (and using, for the first time in six characters, several dozens tomes of knowledge just to get it over with the painful thing, which is a bit jarring, after previously complaining about tomes being useless since levelling was fun), first after the implementation of NPE level system, I can sincerely say that unless the reclass is available, I’m not interested in getting a revenant.
Disclaimer: Take note I’m under no circumstance saying everybody feels it like that, or that my word carries more weight than yours. I’m merely adding my own 0.02$ of experience.

NPE=NGE
A.net should make haste and get rid of it FAST !
preferably before HoT launches.
I do not know who in their right mind thought NPE was a good idea and I can’t fathom for the life of me how it got past any sort of proper testing.
Was the question is it fun ? even answered while developing the NPE at all !
(rhetorical, it was clearly NOT)
