Guild Wars 2

I already have the base game of GW2. I want to know for any of the packages am I purchasing an extra Guild Wars 2 key and the Heart of Thrones expansion key? Or will it just be the Heart of Thrones key but it’s still $49.99?

I just want the expansion not another Guild Wars 2.

If you purchased the core game before January 23, 2015 and apply the pre-purchase upgrade key to your account you get the expansion plus a loyalty character slot. The core game is offered for free to new customers that buy HoT.

If you purchased the core game after the date above and then purchased HoT you might be eligible for a refund or a character slot depending on where you bought the game.

There is no version of HoT available for less than $50. There is no upgrade version that does not come bundled with the Core game.

If you already own the Core game, you do not get an extra one when you pre-purchase HoT. If you do not own the Core game, you get it for free with HoT pre-purchase.

The $49.99 gets you the expansion to upgrade your account to HoT. That is the price for the expansion. If you didn’t already have the core game, you wouldn’t have to buy it again because it would be included to make it easier for you to join the game. Everyone who wants to play HoT will pay $49.99 whether or not they have the game already. Some of those people will get an extra character slot as JustTrogdor described.

It is not an extra key.

You get 1 serial key for the HoT expansion. The key can be applied to an existing account to upgrade it or use it to create a new account. If you use it to create a new account you should have immediate access to the core game and will gain access to HoT when it officially releases.

$49.99 is the price of the expansion. The core game is included for free. So there is no cheaper version that doesn’t come with the core game. You’d pay the same price either way.
