There have been multiple interviews in which Colin stated that no new weapons are coming.
Spears have been in the game since launch. EXISTING weapons are being brought to different professions.

So, my entire argument about spears and polearms seems to be faulty. It has been based on a misconception, or something, of an item linked in chat labeled with the weapon type polearm. I assumed that somewhere along the line they changed the type because why not. But now that I actively go through everything, I can’t for the life of me find it, or evidence of a polearm type. So really have no idea what this was, or where it falls into the grand scheme of things.
You still have no evidence to support your claim, because no, random art is not evidence. It is entirely circumstantial, and it doesn’t matter how much circumstance you pile on, it doesn’t become legitimate evidence because there’s more of it. But, since my one point tying polearms and spears together has evaporated, I can no longer argue that they’re not playing a fast one.
You can only accept the letter of what Devs say. You can’t interpret or assume. They give you Fey level truth, meaning only specifically what they said is definitely true. As such, failing to specifically note Spears, which are actually weapons in the game, means that they could be available, though it does not mean they will.
this thread is just sad. so, so sad.
moldur’s heart will be broken, and i feel for him.

OH. Also some very important information, before the wardrobe system, there had been, in the database, an order of whispers spear, that was labeled polearm, and it’s weapon type was also polearm. I don’t think we’re getting land spears yet.

That was probably it, then. Changes were made, as they often are.
There should seriously be halberds and spears (On land fighting) in this game. Many nations in real life use them in real battle and they werent only used for fishing. i would love to wield a poleaxe rather than a greatsword

You don’t saturate a cutscene that much with a weapon that you can’t actually use in that context unless your artists really just think they look best in that situation. In which case, maybe you should think about adding them as their own full type. ;P
Colin actually addressed that point in one of the interviews. Artists were specifically told not to do that, but they still managed to get wild with polearm-looking non polearm weapons designs. Perhaps artists thought they should have been added as well, or just thought it would look cool, but as far as we were informed all the polearms in the trailer are actually just previously known weapon types with unusual skins.

At the very least, give me a land spear-looking sword then, Anet (seeing as you have scythe-looking staffs)
Until you introduce land spears as new weapon type…

Right, and notice how the only word used in the interview is “polearm”, not spear. There are other things that are polearms, spears are polearms, staves are polearms, hammers are polearms, greataxes are polearms, etc. In game though, the thing we use underwater is specifically called a spear and is never (ingame) referred to as a polearm. It’s unclear language to call the thing specifically named “spear” by the the word “polearm”.
Also take note of the fact that this was an off the cuffs interview at an after party, and notice that the interview didn’t give us a full transcript, just some quotes given context only by the writer.
We’ve gotten misinformation from “interviews” of this nature in the past, and while I am personally putting my bets on land-spear not happening, it has yet to be written in stone that they will not.

coincidentally, land spears are already in the database. They’re identified as polearm.
