I’ve read that hang gliders will not be usable outside of the new map. If so…then this addition makes the new stuff seem very superficial instead of expanding on the core gameplay. It would be nice to be able to visit old vistas and just hang glide your way down. I really hope all the other mastery skills that supposedly help you travel faster will apply to places outside of the new maps.
Adding flight to an area that was not designed with it in mind would open up a lot of exploits so it’s unlikely, no reason something like a speed boost couldn’t be universal though.
I have played other MMOs where everything is a giant map. Not fun waiting for every little thing to load. Plus, they would have to rework practically everything in the existing maps and somehow make the challenge equal to gliders and vanilla players alike.
The idea of the Mastery is that we currently master the Jungle
It’s a great addition as they can include it in all new regions
Example: When we go north to fight Jormag we will need the mastery to learn to deal with cold weather, walk and move on frozen lakes, avalanches etc.
it will unlikely be implemented in the currently existing zen because tbh it’s a waste of resources and it’s pointless. Mastery was designed for level 80 progression and it should stay that way.
I don’t think we will be able to hang glide anywhere other than the Jungle – maybe new regions later on will provide different modes of transport but hang gliding in the far shiverpeaks makes no scence.

Ever played Far Cry 4? I can assure you hang gliding in the mountains makes a lot of sense. And it’s “cool” as hell.
Sorry I thought we were talking about GW2
It was stated in one of the interviews that many of the masteries will be usable in existing maps, but hang gliders will definitely be restricted to the jungle maps, because of how they could be used to break out of existing maps.

According to Colin (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CIiqCW4WrFo) some of the mastery will be usable in current maps
It would depend a lot on what the specific Masteries are. I could see scope for some Masteries that tie in to older maps to be introduced at the same time. For example:
Risen Reaper: Obtained by completing the Risen Slayer achievement (kill 1000 Risen), completion of the Arah dungeon mastery, and unlock all the Orrian weapon skins. Grants a permanent +5% damage against Risen and -5% damage taken from Risen.

In his Gamebreaker interview, he stated that certain masteries would be used exclusively in the expansion content, but others will be usable throughout the world, and there WILL be eventual masteries geared towards specific existing content.

So, because this is GW2, hang gliding between mountain tops makes no scence, but hang gliding between trees do?

I doubt this would be the way to unlock a mastery, as achievements are skin unlocks are account-wide, which masteries are more likely character based. It’s possible that masteries could be account-based, but that doesn’t really play into the idea of character progression in my mind.
I’m sure they have QA testing all existing maps with hang-gliders to see how may of the maps break. If its a low number of them; fixes may be implemented to make more maps glide-able, or not. Who knows
