Question about Prepurchase
If the serial code you used to register the core game came from a retail vendor (rather than buy.guildwars2.com or in-game) and was applied to your account between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015, you’ll also be eligible for a free character slot if you apply a Heart of Thorns pre-purchase serial code before the expansion release.
I am reading that to mean if you bought & applied the core game between those dates.
See attached for more details. Essentually, all you need to do is pre-purchase the expansion where you get the serial code before the expansion goes live. This is meant to compensate players who purchased the core game after the expansion was announced but were not eligible for a refund as they did not purchase directly from Anet.

The prepurchase FAQ states that if I had bought the game from an outside retailer (which I did from Amazon) and “was applied to your account between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015,” I would be eligible for a free character slot. Is the item being applied referring to the core game serial code or the Heart of Thorns XPAC code? I am asking because I bought the game upon release meaning if it is referring to the core game, I would not be eligible.
- If you bought the game before january 23 (so thats your case as you bought it at release) AND prepurchase Hearts of Thorns you will get a free character slot.
- If you bought the game after january 23 from buy.guildwars2.com, you will NOT get a free character slot, but will be eligible for a refund of the core game cause it is included in the expansion.
- Cause it is nearly impossible to do the above for games bought between january 23 and june 16 (when the HoT-prepurchase started) from a third party, those people do not get a refund of the core game and so they get the free character slot instead.
As you bought the core game before January 23, you will get a free character slot.
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
Ok. Thanks for the clarification.
