For the record, I don’t personally care if it takes dollars, gems or three goats and a chicken, I will be among the first in line to buy the new expansion. I was just curious to know how gems worked based on what I had read in the past.
You guys rock.
Wow, that is a tempting offer. Can you toss in bulk bag of cherries and a couple of sprigs of lemongrass to sweeten the deal?
Cherries are account bound, as I had to notice after buying a stack too many. Now my inventory is full of pies.
IMO even adding an area like the silver wastes would be too little for an Expansion pack priced at $30-50. If the price is close to the original game it should have close to the same amount of content.
Well, even though I can’t cite this as official information, there will most definitely be more than a single map in the expansion. Because if they could cram even just everything we have seen of the Maguuma area upto now into a single map then they have seriously worked around the limitations that their maps had in the base game. To the point that I find it very unlikely to be the case.
Also, their trend towards map wide meta events with Dry Top and Silverwastes does also suggests multiple maps quite strongly.
For the record, the price of the original game is very relative, but 25$-40$ is still a “standard” expansion pack price range. I find a 50$ price tag to be unlikely even 40$ seems bit steep but possible, anything between 25-35$ though is fair game. Physical copy of the base game at release cost around 55$, if memory serves.
For the record, buy LW S2 right now and it costs 200 gems an episode that is 1600 gems ie. 20$. Just some food for thought.
they said no paid expansion…but i think they will announce 50 euros :/
They did state this, back when they where promoting GW2 before it’s release they stated that you only pay once for content, and that is when you buy the game. You can youtube and scour though all the hype video and I am sure someone will find it. I just remember them stating this in one those video. I also remember thinking to myself, wow that is a bold statement to make considering there are no MMO beside STO that practice no $$$$ expansions.

Okay that just made me LOL for realsies.
I think I’d go up to $40 for an expansion. If it were more than that, there would have to be something extra special revealed in the forthcoming “deep dive” info-dumps to persuade me to buy. Otherwise I’d probably just have to wait until the price dropped.
But hey, that trailer does look good. :-)

IMO the only way it would be $50-60 is if it came with the original game as well. If the new region is the the size of the two largest regions in the original game plus one new profession, that sounds more like a $25-30 package.

i image it will be 40$ but i dont mind paying 50$
I seriously doubt they could justify charging the same price as the base game for this expansion. Don’t get me wrong, it looks great but for the content and the fact that it doesn’t include the base game, I’d expect it to be around $30 tops.

I would hope that it would come with at least one character slot, since they are introducing a new profession, the revenant. If a character slot is not included, that would dramatically sour the experience for me.
That said, I’m willing to bet that they’ll include one. Our ANet Overlords don’t seem that cruel. :-P

With as much as they make from gems, I would hope ANet doesn’t get too greedy with the price.
edit – Eve online doesn’t charge for expansions either (at least they didnt the eight years I played).

$40-50 for a basic version of the expansion sounds reasonable to me. I pay way more for much less in other games. Look forward to pre-ordering / prepurchasing. You folks deserve it.

I think it should be free. If not then it shouldn’t be expensive, about $10, or $20. Plus on top of that people would be buying gems so I think it should be free or just $10. Just as long as its $40 or less Thanks for the expansion, ArenaNet!!

one has to remember that Anet’s business model relies on microtransactions, and this requires keeping people playing, so they can’t price it too high, or large numbers of players simply won’t buy it and their recurring income will plummet.
the other big thing is WOW is a lot like apple – their brand is so strong they can charge prices well in excess of industry standard and their fan(boi)-base will pay it anyway.
the real competitor to GW2 IMO are all the other F2P games out there that make GW2 already look rather expensive, eg: LOL, TF2 etc continue to provide completely free content years after release.

you guys are insane if you think its going to be over $30 . The major features we are getting are way too small. small details/fixes as well…..
$50 for an expansion? please. it kind of makes me feel stupid to even think it.
The Original Price for Guild Wars Factions was $40 and that was a standalone campaign with loads of new content, lore, 2 new professions and pvp modes!
$10 would be a reasonable price. Not joking at all.

Technically, GW2 is a B2P. That would put it on the same grounds as The Secret World (which is the same game type – mmo).
Don’t get me wrong, I know what you’re saying. Theoretically they should be making a bunch of money through their microtransactions alone – as that’s what F2P games do, and I know at least one of those that didn’t require players to pay a dime, has been going for 2 years with almost weekly content updates, and made a jump to both the most recent consoles – so I’m no all-knowing dude, but I’m pretty sure it’s safe to say with decent pricing on items the whole microtransactions thing can be very profitable. Some people justify the expansion because “They have to make money somehow” – which I feel is just the lamest excuse to ever exist – or because that’s how MMO’s do it, but I still feel like they should have just integrated all of this stuff into the already-existing release mechanics instead of making a “full blown expansion” that contains a lot of features the community has been back-and-forthing ANet with on the forums for the duration of the game’s run (like Guild Halls) and felt would be simple feature pack style updates.
That all being said, since delivery integration is highly unlikely to smoothly be transitioned in a state through the gemstore and normal LS style unlocking, it’s safe to say that we can all hope they wouldn’t go ballistic with their price setting and stick in the 20-30 USD range, as with what they have teased so far would fit roughly into that price range based on content they have previously delivered. Who really knows though – we can be as excited/disappointed as we want until they finally decide to give us the actual price, then we can all start lighting our torches or showering them in money. Or both.
Will the price be dependable on the country you live in?
I’m not much of a person that buys a lot of PC games so I’m not sure how does it work with most of them but I remember that when Diablo 3 RoS came out, it was possible to buy it for a much lower price in Polish Zloty currency than in Euro (I believe it’s mostly because people from Poland don’t spend that much money on games and 40€ would be simply too much for them).

So…no option to buy with with gems?
Personally I plan to buy with cash. It doesn’t hurt to show some support for the home team. Compared to the other games (you know all the names) I’ve taken a look at, Guild Wars 2 is still one heck of a value.

If the original game was 50 euros then expansion should be aroun 30-40 euros. That is reasonable price for me
IMO, $50 is insane to ask for an exp with only one zone. The main game doesn’t cost that much.
Personally, I think between $10-20 is fair for the amount of content being described. If it is true that there is only 1 new area added to the PvE side of things then $9.99 is fair.
I have to agree, unless the expansion comes with as much content as the original game it should not cost anywhere near the original games pricing point.

$10-$20 reasonable price

$20 dollars? For 2 1/2 years of hard work, this is a completely unreasonable price. I think you’re really ball-parking super low, at least it will be $30 dollars, at most $60 dollars (standard edition with original game included ). To credit this, the staple price for most brand new expansion packs are priced around $40 USD.

“No need to buy them, Gw2 will feature consistent free content updates and in-game events going forward. Our goal is to make it so you get more from Gw2 for free than you get from a game you pay a subscription for. On top of a large amount of free bonus content, we will be expanding on offerings in the Black Lion Trading Company going forward, as well as be doing large-scale expansion content down the road.”
“We do appreciate that you’d like to buy lots of new content, but we’d prefer to give a lot of it to you for free, cause that’s what we think a responsible MMO company does!”
while this doesnt say EVERYTHING is free, it appears to me that the vast majority, including an expansion should be free… at least cuz its the Responsible thing an MMO company does.

and No, brand new expansion packs can be priced from a range of $10- $40. Why should we settle for imaginative staple price if what we are getting doesn’t even give as much as (insert other AAA MMO here). Why do we compare? We compare so companies compete against each other for better quality , and quantity. Why was GW2 made? Id like to think that GW2 was made to reinvent MMORPGs , but now GW2 is slowly going back to the old grindy MMO way. Conservative community’s fault I believe.

Don’t forget to factor in all the money from constant gemstore purchases that help fund active content delivery, updates, and fixes that has been going on for it’s 2 year run. Also don’t forget to factor in that they have delivered 3 areas for free already (assuming you logged in – about 10 bucks if you didnt), as well as major mechanical “fixes” (I think most would argue against the NPE fixing anything when it comes to leveling a character) and skins. And story.
Yeah, they should get some cash for their work (and they do most likely daily due to people buying gems), but it is certainly not unreasonable for players to find an expansion that adds objectively less (from what was announced) to the game than an entire season of living story has only worth a 20 dollar price point. That’s why I still feel if they want to monetize it, they should just stick the new class in the gemstore and stick with their 2.50 an episode LS approach (although I admittedly don’t like paying for that either).

To the dude that says gold – gems is not profit it is. The cash have already been generated its like having a investor give you money upfront to do something later. So if Anet use that money for something else its not anyones concern but Anet’s. I for one would like to see it in the gemstore. Unlike most folks im one of those poor gamers money is extremely tight. I do however agee that it would cause major gem price issues. So maby wait a month or 2 after release.
Assuming I am the dude…
Please explain how a player using Tyiran gold to purchase gems generates income. That is lost revenue that can only be recouped by players purchasing gems to exchange for gold. The gem exchange as a whole is only profitable if the number of gems bought with real money to convert into gold exceeds the number of gems purchased with gold that would have been purchased with real money instead (not everyone who used gold to buy gems would have used real money instead). Theoretically, the gem exchange as a whole could cost Arenanet revenue.
Investors expect to be repaid, the gem exchange is nothing like an investor.
I am not trying to tell Arenanet or other players how to behave, just trying to describe the realities involved.
Let me explain. Gems dont fall out the sky it have to come from somewhere so this is how it works. People buy gems with real life money meaning anet makes money that is how ammount of gems in the store is generated which other people buy with gold. The point is something was bought with real money now if you use the gems you buy with real money yourself or someone else uses it. The gems have been paid for meaning profit.
So what would happen if no one ever buys gems with real money the gem prices (with gold) will shoot through the roof.
Hope this explains it.
i have been playing game since beta, and really love it, but why did u lie back there? – You promised no monthly payment and no more buying stuff (patch, etc.), saying everything in future will be free, couse you dont want to be like another games (which was one of main reasons i bought the game).
Now, you are just like another games, where ok patch, fixes, events, updates are free (for example like in WoW), but expansion is paid. Its shame you ruin game philosophy (that you can be proud of + make propagation strategy on it) + you dont keep your promises

No, they have never said that everything would be free.
They have said that after the initial purchase of the base game it would be free to play “forever.”
They have stated that they would come out with future content that would be purchasable, waaaaay back at launch. And that after said purchase of future content, it too would be free to play forever. They also said it would be optional, you didn’t have to purchase it in order to keep playing [the base game].

Tell me how much did the last “50$ game” last you before u quit and forgot about it?
Not to mention u will most likely be able to get the expansion with ingame gems. Just like u can upgrade the normal GW2 client to digital deluxe and so on.

Actually it has been stated that it will be available for purchase in both digital and box editions. Its in the FAQ section I believe.
There are several links floating around here, let me see if I can find one.
Found it:
Q: Is the expansion “buy to play”?
A: Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is a paid expansion to Guild Wars 2, but once you buy it, there are no subscription fees. This means that you can continue playing and access future updates for Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns with no subscription fee.

It’s completely valid to compare prices because if anything else is we can take away is that prices are extremely accurate representations of how much to expect a expansion to be priced at. Also, this should have been in the game already? How can you be so self-entitled when they are a company that is providing YOU entertainment and 95% for free? Get off your high-horse man, you have insane expectations when they’ve already provided you with free content for the past 2 1/2 years without a sub fee.
How is Guild Wars 2 going back to their grindy way? Their philosophy was to never make require something to grind for that HAD to be BiL (Best in Slot) Its extremely easy to get a full set of exotic gear in this game and to attain money which anything more Ascended holds a little to None % gain and isn’t needed for anything but FOTM. If anything is grindy is cosmetic items. I’m going to quote someone else here because they explained it perfectly.
Vodcom.6924 explained it:
Some people clearly need a recall :
An MMO is considered “grindy” if one has to repeat a small set of simple and uninteresting tasks in order to reach the level cap and enjoy the “end-game content”
Having objects or rewards that require grind in a game does not make it “grindy”
In GW2 the end-game content can be summed up as : dry top + silverwastes ; megaboss ; living world ; dungeons and fractals. Of all these only fractals of level 10+ require ascended equipment. Thus one with exotic gear can access 100% of endgame content since you walk through the same fractals at level or 50 (only the difficulty changes).
And GW2 gives you tools to bypass the leveling process for your alts (exp tomes + skill scrolls + gold to buy traits).
With that in mind, one cannot possibly claim that GW2 is a grindy MMO. The ones who do either :
Want everything handeled to them immediately without breaking a sweat.
bash the game for the sake of bashing Anet/the game.
Edit : I’d also like to remind you all that ascended tier items were added because a vocal minority (not pointing fingers here) asked for something to grind for once they’ve finished the game.
Give me a MMO that doesn’t have a level of grind, you won’t find it.

I am baffled at just how many forum posts I have seen where people are upset that there is an expansion coming…some think it should be free, and some even prefer living story. Free content, forever, isn’t very sustainable. They need something else to support their content. Some will point to gems, but a lot of people buy gems with in game gold, or just avoid gems completely. They need more to make money, and we need more content as players than what living story could provide.
Let’s assume for the moment that Anet did say they aren’t planning to ever release an expansion. That was not a promise. They didn’t lie to us. Things changed, and didn’t go how they thought it would. The vast majority of the community is not happy with living story. It has improved a LOT from the start, but it is not enough by itself. They had to change how they were doing things. And that’s just what they’ve done. And they’ve done it so smoothly and beautifully too.
Release base game > season 1 of LS (take care of serious bugs and other flaws in their LS releases, learn how to improve the LS releases) > season 2 of LS (introduce new elder dragon and story elements, setup for revenants, setup for venturing into jungle) > expansion pack that continues from and builds off of season 2.
From the sound of things (an interview I saw yesterday with Colin), this is going to be their new formula. 4:52 to 6:55 -
http://youtu.be/CIiqCW4WrFo?t=4m52s
Now THAT is unique. THAT provides a lot of content. In between expansions, we get living story. We are getting living story, AND expansions, and there is still discontent within the community? Both sides get everything they wanted and more and there are people who still aren’t happy? I really don’t understand this.

actually a better analogy would be , you bought a t-shirt and you love it, still wearing it 5 years later, then they make another t-shirt and decide to sell that too. instead of ,“here we made this too, have it for free”
Though really the t-shirt analogy is really a good one. The people who amde the tshirt didnt add anything to it, they didnt create anything new for there to be a reason you’d need to pay another extra 10 dollars
Anyhow, they never said that everything added would be free. They stated there would be free updates (which we got with living story, feature patches etc) and the possibility that in the future there could be an expansion, but they never said the expansion would be free.

WHAT. They don’t ask you to pay to continue to play the current game. You pay if you want the new content they gonna add. You see the world work this way
A company (Anet) hire ppl, pay a place to work, pay for licenses, pay for administration, pay for legal services, etc.
Will all that stuff they create content.
Then they sell that content to their player base.
If they did a good job, they usually got more money than they spent on the content so they can reinvent that money on new content and cycle continue. If they did a bad job, ppl don’t buy enough of that content, the company receive less money than their invested and they shut down the game before they become bankrupt.
There is nothing free in the world no matter what you ’’expect’’.

If u played it since beta u practically payed 50$ for a game that has lasted u for 3 years. Is it that much to pay 30-40$ more when the expansion comes out IF it’s payed?
Tell me how much did the last “50$ game” last you before u quit and forgot about it?
.
If u love your T-shirt and still wearing it 5 years, you also go to china and pay the kid who made it extra 10 dolars?
Sorry, but for me its not extra, its what i except, and the reason why i bought it.
But i understand your (different) attitude
Besides, there is plenty ways to support developers another way (and more voluntarily, for those who really want to)
Btw, please dont see someone who dont want to “extra pay” as a bad guy or something.
U made like literally the dumbest comparison humanly possible. When you try to compare something u compare it with something else from the same “field” in this case games.
Good thing u didn’t compare it with ebola. And even so…if the kid from China comes out with an improved t-shirt what do u want me to do…send my current t-shirt back to china so he can modify it for free? If i liked the old one i would buy the improved one. Your comparison is wrong on so many levels it’s actually impressive.

I am more than happy to pay for the expansion in one go. As long as there are no subscription fee, I do not mind paying for it. C’mon, they worked on it for probably 2 years now. They need to get paid for this work! It’s not on a small scale like Living Story. It’s looking HUGE!
If you can’t afford it, go play P2W MMOs or return to subscription MMO like WoW, in which you will pay MUCH MORE than you ever will on GW2…
“and there are people who still aren’t happy”
i am happy
“ppl crying about the fact that they have to pay”
i bought it once, dont see a reason to be forced to buy it again.
For financing purpose u have new buyers.
For aditional financing, u have (optional) microtranstactions (not influencing gameplay). Just do your job corectly and people will apreciate it (pay or recommand to friends).
Thats my opinion.
If they were not updating game, the game will eventualy die. Updates (if good) is the key what keeps game popular and selling.
