if by zones you are referring to their 3 biome per map thing then no they are not separate instances. my understanding was that they were layered on top of each other. i didnt play the first beta so i dont know if that was a different biome or not but it is the same map just a different part

From my understanding it was:

Vines
Floor
Roots

BW2 seems to take place on the Vines and Floor.

My understanding is the bwe only uses the floor. Neither the roots or canopy are open yet. That from a dev comment for BWE1 and i assume the same here

You can reach the top though and it’s nothing but sky. I was thinking the same thing (floor) but it doesn’t make sense when you factor in you can get to the very top of the map and it’s only sky – no vines, or huge canopies or anything.

We where closer to the canopy than the floor for both BWs. Roots I would say would be below where we could fall to, could be wrong but to me roots are underground unless they are all Epiphytic plants.

Taken from the link above:

For our second beta weekend test, you’ll be landing in a different part of the map than the one we showed in our first beta weekend, and you’ll be able to explore a new area: the jungle-floor biome.

hmm, ok so that is what the floor looks like. Although a group that calls pine hardwood isn’t really too picky about naming.

I imagine the biomes will be like the levels of the Grove. All part of one map, stacked on top of each other and with pathways between them.

Or a bit like Kaineng City in GW1 where you had paths going over and under each other. Only without so many issues when you’re in combat, because this game has a Z axis so the computer can tell what level you’re on in relation to enemies.

You can not reach to top of the map, you can only reach the top of the BWE2 area.

I was climbing to the top and I reached the upper border of the BWE2 area when I jumped (first picture) and on that picture is a platform on a tree above, above the BWE2 area, where a POI seems to be.

Yes, there is not very much so high above, yet, but I already see there floating trees/rocks, flying dragons and a flying air ship. When you are on a tree top there should be a lot of air/space around you.

I read that, which confused me as I thought we were at the jungle floor previously as well

And keep in mind, this is only the edge of the jungle, so the “canopy” level is relatively sparse on this map, but it may be considerably more dense on the next one.

Yes, I can confirm that what looks like top of the map is still just the jungle floor. I did some trick jump/gliding and got very high, but there was still a long way to go to some areas in the sky which were blocked by invsible wall. There are also artificial beta walls on the entrances to BWE1 area. What you see on the floor is also just artificial. I believe in full release, you will be able to descend down and you will see a world of roots and weird monsters

If we can still fall so far, how is it that we are on the ground level?

Imagine a pot with a potato plant. The flower on the top is the jungle canopy. The leaves in the middle are the jungle floor. The potato (with many holes) and soil is the jungle roots.

You didn’t see the ground yet… all the structures are build on big ancient plants.

Leaves in the middle isn’t a floor though lol

It’s possible that the lack of vines/canopy above is an artifact of us being in an instance. Things outside the instance might not show to us inside it. I’ve noticed when inside the Salma instance that even though I can see over the fence to “outside,” it’s only a fake surface. There are never any players, only NPCs walking back and forth in a set pattern. They might not have bothered to put in a canopy above, just sky.
