That looks to me like a Rifle.

Ok to settle this once and for all, look at those 2 pictures, if you still see a rifle, a spear or wathever else than a staff, you’re blind and I feel sorry for you.
Or you’re just a troll.
And the preview show the staff in game.

The specialisation may be rifle, staff or something else, Anet knows we datamine and they me be trolling us (cf sword skills for ele, and now they removed and a war horn appears taht looks like the ele spec), but one thing is sure, in this picture, it’s a staff, nothing else.

And I guess people may not like some weapons because of their nature, LB guard, Rifle thief, they’re ranged, and people who play PvE are aware they won’t use them. Because there is no chance the LB offers more damage than any melee wepon the guardian has, and the rifle can’t gives more utility than SB. Same for Warhorn for ele, if it happens, the meta won’t change for the weapons at least, because now for ele, staff is by far on top, and sword would’ve been able to offer more, war horn won’t, because you will still have scepter or dagger main hand.
A Melee weapon, whatever it might be, let a chance to be good, a ranged one gives no place to hope.

Maybe it’s a Javelin ?

Yeah I don’t get how people can possibly see a rifle in what is quite obviously just a stick.

There is no stock, barrel, muzzle, trigger or any sort of mechanism on that entire stick. How could it possibly be a rifle.

It’s clearly a rifle. It’s just a magic rifle that doesn’t need a stock, muzzle, trigger or bullets.

In the image the rifle clearly has all of those; stock, barrel, trigger and muzzle. Its even got a strap.

The Barrel is obvious. The muzzle is partially off the image. The stock and trigger are hard to see just due to the blurring effect in the lower left of the image.

I’ve included an annotated image for those who don’t see it.

I really don’t see it sorry. The muzzle is just some ornamentation on the staff. The strap is just a painting effect, this painting is filled with similair swirls and lines.
That being said, I would still be happy if thief got a rifle after all. But if that thing in the painting is a rifle then I’m the president of the united states.

EDIT: Besides, the skin is already in the game files anyway. You can preview it, and it’s a staff. It’s the EXACT same skin, look at the ornamentations, rings and markings on it. It also has the metal caps at the end which you think are muzzles. It even has some small ribbons hanging from it which could be the strap you are seeing.

The reason it’s not a druid is because the colouring scheme is identical to the current five Thief specialization backdrops you can see in the game. That’s why on seeing it, everyone is assuming that it’s the Thief elite specialization, and it shows that the Staff will be its weapon.

The Dragonhunter and Chronomancer specialization backdrops were also included in the client download and have been seen as well. Sure enough, they match up in colouring with the normal Guardian and Mesmer specialization backdrops.

What class the character in the picture is, is completely irrelevant (assuming you are talking about the screenshot). The skin in that picture is still the same as the skin in that painting. And the character in that painting is a thief.

Ergo thief gets staff.

It’s clear to me that it’s a bo-staff in that picture. And it would suit the thief, because if their specialisation is an Assassin (assassins in GW1 had staves) or Ninja (ninja’s use bo-staves a lot) or KungFu Fighter (following the Dragonhunter name), it would make even more sense.

I could see thieves using skills like this guy:

Would be awesome to see thieves using a bo-staff, especially with all those possible spinning moves.

After January HoT reveal conference devs told us we can look for hints put into trailer with other specs weapons so that’s why ele sword and thief rifle ideas came up.

And right after they said the art team took some liberties and that we shouldn’t read to much into it.

Telling people to look for clues, whether there really are clues or not sounds like just a marketing hype thing. To get people to dissect and discuss each piece of information in great depth. To keep people fixated on the HoT expansion.

can people stop arguing and THINK

look at picture

is that a thief?
is theif the ONLY ONE who gets that armor?

no.
what medium armor user do we know who is getting a staff.

ranger. duh

if they gave thief staff, that would mean 7 classes have staff. but only 2 have rifle.

so its easier to assume that picture is for the RANGER. not thief.

turning a thief into an assassin = believable. they similar enough as is
turning a thief into a ninja? look at japanese history, ninjas used rifles during the time of Oda Nobunaga. hell one SHOT oda twice.

the Ninjas of this time didn’t use staffs, as bludgeoning weapons are ineffective for stealth.

thief to monk? its to much of a stretch, so no. i doubt thief is gettign staff. as a blugeoning weapon for a stealth class makes absolutely no sense(repeatedly hitting target till they die as they scream….real stealthy….bah)

also, druids defend their forests, aka they can get pretty dark with their hatred of beings who destroy the forest.
and whats going on in gw2 forests? a dragon. corruption.
so why can’t that picture be a druid striking from the dark of the forest?

why do people assume its a thief?

do we know what color this druid will be? green cause ranger?

answer these
1. why would a stealth class use a blugeoning weapon instead of a single hit weapon.
2. why would they give ranger and theif the same weapon when so many classes have staff? and only 2 have rifle
3. why would they give thief a staff when dagger is already the pinnacle of dmg dealing. what would be the appeal of staff over dagger for a STEALTH class.

4. look at existign thief weapons, all share something, weapons that in real life would be used to quickly kill their target.
one of these things is not like the other. what is it? staff.
but rifle fits in

pistols are ranged yes, but they MOBILE range. constant dmg
rifle is new, stationary ranged alpha dmg

staff? stationary melee? for a thief? thats death
mobile melee? we have sword and dagger already. so a waste

To be fair the character on picture is hardly a druid.

you need to go look up some non D&D druids. look up a druid when their home is destroyed(like for example, when an airship fires on a forest)
they get dark as they pull your body apart and shower your blood over the plants you killed.
oh and heres a pretty picture

Jungle, not forest

And changes are made from class to spec (of the same class) with exception of rytlock but his change is backed up lorewise.

So with this analogy it’s Eir or Autie Rox that will become druid (because they are rangers).

not rangers
sylvari.
aka those who are most affected by this dragon

specially those not allied with the pale tree that stands AGAINST the dragon.

the nightmare court stands opposite the pale tree, they are most vulnerable to the corruption of the dragon.
i expect to see faolain do a pretty big change when the dragon’s corruption offers her power(like jormag did to norn)

and this is the first time anet has posted a picture of something that wont come for ages?
pretty sure they do previews of stuff way into the future often(most never come true)

and besides, that picture has never really matched faolain.

Yes it does. Ninja’s used bo staffs (among other weapons). And they practically invented stealth.

the bo staff was a weapon of training, not really used much by successful ninjas in the field.
mostly throwing knifes(and other throwing weapons), katanas, and daggers(multiple names for them).
rifles became popular for their ability to eliminate the target from a distance, saving much risk in that distance needed to cover (as its easier to stealth to a view of the target rather than up close, and it was easier to run….which ironically is the reason Oda lived, both shots hit his armor and failed to kill)

as i said, blugeoning weapons like the bo staff don’t mix well with stealth. smaller, easier to conceal weapons work better. (or in the case of the katana, something that 80% of japan carried around. it was still a weapon that could kill in a single hit though, unlike bo staff)

the rifle was the exception as it had range.

There are martial artists who can disable or even kill you with their bare hands in many different ways. I’m sure a ninja can do quite some damage with a long stick. A true martial artist can turn everything into a deadly weapon, wether it’s a razor sharp sword or a paper clip.

true
but most of those aren’t ideal for assassinations or sabotage. as they take time and position. not ideal when there are alot of guards around
or in the case of japan, an army.

when you use a blugeoning weapon, you are giving up stealth
when you use barehands, you are relying on being alone with the target.
-both vastly impact your survivability as you need to be there and gone

both reasons that blades and eventually rifles would become more popular very fast.

a bo staff is for fights when your opponent can strike back at you, in which case the bo staff counters the blows. but you lose stealth as your target is aware of you.

you need to go look up some non D&D druids. look up a druid when their home is destroyed(like for example, when an airship fires on a forest)
they get dark as they pull your body apart and shower your blood over the plants you killed.
oh and heres a pretty picture

You’re really grasping at straws here man. Why don’t you answering me this. Why would any character designer choose to use an armor set called sneakthief to represent a druid class? The whole point of design it to represent something to be readable by your audience usually using available tropes and stereotypes. Now if you can honestly say that you would make the design choice to use a ninja looking outfit to represent a manipulator of nature then good thing we don’t have you on the design team. Also to your point about a stealth class using a bludgeoning weapon I see no problem with it. Staff is a traditional martial arts weapon ninja’s are martial artists. There is more sense in that then putting a druid in tights and a shredder mask.

Class colors are used in the background are reminiscent of theifs current trait lines backgrounds

and yet a blugeoning weapon matches a stealth class?

do we know what color this druid will be? green cause ranger?

answer these
1. why would a stealth class use a blugeoning weapon instead of a single hit weapon.
2. why would they give ranger and theif the same weapon when so many classes have staff? and only 2 have rifle
3. why would they give thief a staff when dagger is already the pinnacle of dmg dealing. what would be the appeal of staff over dagger for a STEALTH class.

4. look at existign thief weapons, all share something, weapons that in real life would be used to quickly kill their target.
one of these things is not like the other. what is it? staff.
but rifle fits in

pistols are ranged yes, but they MOBILE range. constant dmg
rifle is new, stationary ranged alpha dmg

staff? stationary melee? for a thief? thats death
mobile melee? we have sword and dagger already. so a waste

I think he imagined his perfect GW2 druid and he wants his wish to come true. Nothing wrong with it, however I’m pretty sure he’s going to be disappointed.

go by that logic if u want, but then why put staff in at all.
what does theif gain from it?
a mobile melee? nope. dagger
a stationary melee with knockdowns? rip for thief

i’d sooner believe its a dart gun than a staff(at least dart gun is a stealth weapon)

can u give evidence of any ninja using a staff during actual combat (aka not training)

i don’t play ranger, nor do i plan to.

i play thief/necro.

This thread continues to deliver top keks. That’s not a historical ninja holding a staff, that’s a GW2 thief using a staff.
