I wouldn’t count on any renown hearts being in HoT. There aren’t any in Orr, nor in Dry Top and the Silverwastes. Originally the game wasn’t supposed to have renown hearts at all, only events. However many players were lost without them, so for new players they added them. However in high level areas they are not needed because by then players are used to events.

Yeah, I would also add that when maps go up in level and difficulty, they become more and more reliant on large-scale meta-events over renown hearts—as can be seen with the complete lack of renown hearts in Orr, Dry Top, and Silverwastes, as well as the increasing prevalence of meta events as you progress through Orr (with Temples), and the complete reliance of Dry Top and Silverwastes on large scale meta-events.

My guess is that general PvE in the new zones will be more meta-event dependent than Orr, but less so than Silverwastes.

It’s a bit sad to be honest. Without hearts, zones feel a bit soulless. Sure, there are events happening, but you get a better idea of the story through hearts than you do most events.

It really depends on the map. For example, the Cursed Shore meta-event chain does a really good job of conveying the difficulty of the Pact’s efforts to establish a foothold and push in to Arah, but nobody really cares about the SilverWaste meta-event story, that i know of.

Not that I’ve heard of. HoT is adding a new zone which will contain the outpost system instead of hearts.

There isn’t really much in the way of zone stories anyway, hearts or not. Some of the larger event-chains do a better job at presenting story-lite but most zones don’t have a event chain taking them from one side of the map to another presenting a consistent narrative throughout.

bah! story? who needs that when you have champion bags and an endless cycle of events that you’ll grind again and again and again for masteries? ammirite?

story in an mmo zone… that’s old news… events only now! zones must become boxes in which we run events… cause that’s a “living” world

(exaggerated for dramatic effect but you get the point, well, at least some of you do )

There is a story to every event and every zone has a larger, general story, as does some areas within a zone. ArenaNet loves exploration, so if you want to actually know what’s going on, you’ll really need to go out of you way if you want to see everything.

As you may know, an event usually continues on after it’s complete. NPCs rarely vanish like they do in other MMOs, so continue to follow them. They’ll usually continue a dialogue and allow you to interact with them. After a certain amount of time, the event may enter a reset period where the NPCs do something else. When ready, the NPCs may do something else again, at which point the event starts. You basically have to watch an event from its ending to its beginning to its ending again while also interacting with everything. Not everything is marked for you either. What makes it even worse is that sometimes the event splits, where for example you’re tasked to follow an NPC, meanwhile, the NPCs that remained begin a dialogue. Also, don’t forget failing, which sometimes tells another side of the story.

Keep in mind however that the goal was to create a living world and as such, the story is basically always related to daily life.

Hearts are basically the opposite and were designed solely for questers that couldn’t adapt to the game. Like usual, you get your chunk of story upfront and at the end.

HoT is going to have adventures, which will be, hopefully, a better version of hearts.

Most event stories are small and isolated and exist primarily to explain why we are doing activity X, Y, Z. As a whole these stories do a good job of giving a feel to the zones, but it doesn’t present particularly complex narrative for example: “centaurs are attacking, help!” which leads to killing centaurs for the next few minutes. Well this tells me centaur aren’t very nice, but in terms of the overarching lore it hardly tells me about the history of the centaur and the humans and there wars. Maybe a NPC will have a few lines of dialog, but those tend to be very short and to the point: centaurs are bad, and we’ve been at war for a long time. This has always been an area that I thought could be expanded with some sort of in-game lore journal, but that’s a different topic.

But as far as zone not stories goes I’d say zones have themes and not really stories. For example what is the main storyline of Lorna’s Pass? Or Gendarran Fields? In the case of Gendarran Fields you could say, well the stories about fighting centaurs, but that’s really more a theme than a story. The same theme appears Kessex Hills, Harathi Hinterlands, and to a lesser extent in other zones.

As far as I’ve seen, there won’t be any renowned hearts. The closest thing I think will be the Adventures, which unlike renowned hearts, are repeatable.

There isn’t going to be any. They prefer events instead, and so do i.

I can understand why people like them though. It gives them tasks and objectives without the feeling of being rushed. Some events are almost always on timers and heart tasks are a much more static and relaxing way of accomplishing something. That’s how i see it anyway.
