So, I was just wondering if Anet was thinking about people that are gonna change their main to Revenant. If they are gonna go through the lvl 1-80 like with other chracters or try to make it like in WoW with Death knight – having some lvls at start with some cool backstory why they have the levels (like being swallowed by the Mists and then boom, got back as a Revenant).
I by myself dont have problem with lvling (also, got tons of those lvl boosters from birthday gifts and some tomes), I was just wondering, cause if people are gonna change their class, before they are gonna be 80, they might “miss” the new stuff and discovering in Maguuma.
So, what do you guys think?

You don’t miss new stuff as it will be there forever. I think there are plenty off options for players nowadays to skip the levelling progress. I know I got enough level up scrolls and I’ve only been doing dailies for getting them (exchanging xp writs for the level up scrolls).

I have one of every class at 80 and have only leveled through the actual game 2×.

You also might need map completion for legendary in which case you can just level normally as you need to do all the events anyway.

Please skill/trait split and give control to the PvP team. Karl is fucking killing us

Thanks for replises, I know about all you have written in here and I mentioned it also in my first post.
And I know the content won’t dissapear but still I think that when you play the new content with all the people it is gonna be different than if you play i later after you lvl up the new character.

I have been trying to play a revenant. Last beta, I took my Rev into fractal but that was before Shiro. This beta I have been trying to do HoT areas with Shiro + Mallax, duel wielding sword and sword + axe. Later I switched to Shiro + Stonehammer, so duel wielding sword plus hammer.

For what its worth, these were all ascended weapons because I had raided my characters and put a selection of ascended weapons in my bank just before the beta start. So that they were copied when my bank was. I also gave my Rev ascended rings and amulets since I had a bunch lying around in my bank.

Anyway, I like the concept behind the revenant but I strongly feel that I personally probably would benefit from the levelling journey with him. This is something that is easy to forget when rolling a new class. Just being dropped at 80 isn’t the ideal situation. Sure, I can pull a build off metabuild and just blindly follow it. But I wouldn’t really understand the Rev if that’s all I did. This would prove problematic in the long run and potentially detrimental to my enjoyment of the class. That’s not to say that I am going to go all the way from 1-80 in the slow build. But I might use tomes in batches or as I feel ready.

I guess what I am saying is that while there are plenty of ways for players to skip the 1-80 journey or start of in the mist with the revenant already at 80 and get a back story, like the death knight, for long term enjoyment and understanding of the class – some “traditional” leveling might be beneficial. At least, that’s what I think!

My brain is shagging under the weight of changes… having six characters was not a good idea!

A few weeks ago I had mentioned to my kids that the Rev wasn’t just a new twist of the Rit from GW1 but a combination of the Rit and WoW’s Death Knight. Which is okay by me as I had a DK in WoW. The next issue for me was – are they (ANet) going to have players go through full leveling or start the Rev at an advanced level.

As my Rev is going to be a continuation of my Rit, I answered that question for myself. With the Tomes of Knowledge I shall take him to lvl20, which is the cap in GW1, and then play level him from there. He has been called back from the Mists to aide in the battle with the Elder Dragons. Hokie… maybe. Effective for me… I can live with it simply fine, considering my charr is the descendant of my GW human ranger and my Mes has never died (has something to do with bloodlines and a particular lich). So, the Mes called back an old friend from the Mists to help out. His solution to the dwindled manpower.

I believe it is up to each player to decide how he or she will address the leveling issue for their Revenant. Guild Wars is a game that allows the players creative license, within the given parameters.

So, Get Creative Folks!

Since my thief has become more or less useless after playing it since release (thx Anet for great thief balancing), I’ve decided to check out rev as a possible new main. Eventhough I’d have more then enough tombes to lvl instantly, I wouldn’t want to miss out on lvling form 1 to 80 and geht to know rev from the very beginning.

Thanks all for replies!
I started to gather some tomes and got the 3rd Birthday gift so I am gonna do this and we will see =).
I agree with the fact, that insta 80 is nice, but you dont have time to learn the class itself, so thats why I am gona keep some lvls to learn – or play the story to finish the lvls.

What exactly do you think you’ll learn by stopping a few levels shy of 80 that you wouldn’t be able to learn by playing at 80? How exactly does gameplay change at all while leveling?

You have complete control over how quickly your abilities are unlocked and it’s completely independent of leveling. You could easily instant level to 80 and only unlock some abilities (if you are concerned about being overwhelmed) and still be perfectly fine. The whole “insta leveling doesn’t teach you the class” thing is a false dichotomy because levels are largely beside the point in GW2.

Add in the fact you’ve been playing long enough to get a lvl 30 scroll and you should have a good handle how the game’s systems work and they don’t really switch up too much when switching classes. Stopping leveling at 60 or 70 or heck even lvl 78 doesn’t really accomplish anything special. You can easily level to 80 and then if you feel like you aren’t comfortable enough to do the new content do things in the old world.

Truthfully, I’m not so sure that leveling the old way in the vanilla pve maps will teach you that much about how to fight in the new areas. (A sad state of affairs, imo). Most fighting in the old maps doesn’t take more that autoattack to win. The other skills often are useless (I’m looking at you, boonstripper skills) or needed so infrequently they can be forgotten most of the time or of such short term effect with long cooldowns that I, personally, don’t even bother to use them.

I don’t think that whether you tome your Rev to 80 or traditional level will make that much difference overall. The only difference is traditional leveling will give you some muscle memory and a better recall of your skills than make an immediate 80 and then go to play in the Maguuma.

I am going to level, but use my level 30 booster and start from there. I want to do my personal story and slowly learn every legend and weapon, learn my traits, utilities inside and out. I also will be skill point hunting so I can get everything possible for traits and utilities.

I am casual but also a veteran player so I usually get 5-6 levels a day with some crafting thrown in time to time..

I’ll try the content first, try to make my Guardian (main) a Dragonhunter (hope it is easy/fast) and then I’ll create a Revenant.

I have 3x Birthday Boosters and some Festive Boosters (I think this is the name?) and of course the tomes/experience scrolls, but I guess I’ll stick to the old leveling with events/hearts with a birthday booster on.

One of the reasons I’ll do that is because if I just create him and make him lv80 with tomes I will be lv80 with like 5% of the map,and I hate being high level in low level areas just to get waypoints etc,it is such a chore…I hate it. I prefer to get waypoints while leveling.

I was actually considering that as well but I decided to boost my Rev to 80 and then do the personal story because then at least all the XP I earn from doing that will go towards getting my the Legendary Crafting and Pact Commander Masteries.

That’s actually an extremely good point. Leveling to 80 takes a lot of exp, none of will be going towards advancing your Mastery lines. For example, maxing one of the Maguuma lines takes over 16 million exp. When you consider that traditional leveling is taking both time and exp from end game account progression, the traditional leveler will take quite an exp hit.

I’ve only leveled twice out of my 4 characters, the second time I just crafted to 80 on my necro before crafting exp was needed.

Rev though I’m going to use an exp scroll and just level him up normally. The options he has along with the fact he’s a new class will take me some getting used to, as well as swapping legends and not just my weapons. And normally, I hate leveling as I prefer experimenting with different builds and such, but revenant I’m going to make an exception.

Yeah, I had originally planned to level mostly normally, just using tomes to supplement the process. But then I realized I was wasting a ton of potential exp towards masteries and I think I’m going to do just do the straight to 80 boost.
