I have a 80 Thief, Guardian and Necro that I am trying to run through the story with. I could really use some help on what builds would work best for PVE storyline as I am just diing left and right even on regular world mobs and always if I get 2 or more with my Thief and Guardian. I never had these issues in the previous areas or dungeons.
My Necro on the other hand is practically walking through every fight unharmed.
Thief build is DD/SB with
Deadly: 223
Acro: 311
Trick: 112
Guardian Build is GW/SS with
Honor: 223
Valor: 121
Zeal: 322
Necro Build is S/DW
Blood: 313
Death: 333
Soul: 321

Well I only play thief so I can guide you on that only.
Fisr don’t use zerker gear, I use combination of knight and carrion, pure zerker will get their face melted. Staff short bow is the best sets in my opinion great aoe clear and dodges.

All I can say is if you were happy with the difficulty level in the original zones then you are going to hate HoT, as far as I’m concerned they skill capped me out of the game; I got a refund.
Don’t let the bad players discourage you. The game finally made me think about my builds and tweaking them in order to suit particular battles. The game isn’t hard if you put the tiniest amount of effort into learning new things beyond pushing 1 and afking for shatterer.
I’ve always been running minion toughness / condition damage and it’s finally paying off for me as a necro. I can solo most events and have done many of the champion challenges with 2-6 people.
Bottom line is ‘Get good’ you’ll have to learn how the monsters attack, which attacks they favor and adjust your tactics accordingly.
I have around 24k health with some 1400 toughness,

Never stop moving, running a burn DRAGONHUNTER works great(you only need LB 4 + tortch. Take the basic burn guard traits. Profit

Thanks, I talked to some folks in game and it looks like I may be under geared as well. I am in the sets from the Order of Whispers, Priory and Vigil along with those yellow weapons and some karma accessories.
I simply just played the story and stopped, I didn’t do any of the Scarlet or Living World stuff, so it looks like things will be difficult for a bit until I get geared.
I guess I need to buy gems turn into gold then buy the gear off the trading post…not interested in that.

Try to get Toughness in your gear. Knight and Soldier are good armor pieces to get Toughness while still getting Power.
My Mesmer is fine so far, but I’ve been stacking Toughness on her to help mitigate damage. Along with judicious use of healing abilities and condi removers, she can survive a good bit. She’s a Greatsword and Scepter-Gun user.
Understand that, except for your Guardian, your preferred classes are relatively short on armor but long on damage. That means you want to be able to burn most foes quickly since your Necro (light armor) or your Thief (medium armor) won’t usually have the defenses to withstand a long battle.
Depending on your fighting style, you either go for burst physical damage (therefore stacking up on POW in your gear), or abuse Conditions. Remember that Poisons not only DOT, but also provide effects like slower skill regen. Vulnerability is always a nice thing to put on your enemies. For mobile targets, Torment is just plain evil (most of the deaths from facing the Horror in the Mad King’s Labyrinth is from Torment. The ‘kitten forces us to move.). You can choose to either “burst” DOT (going for increased Condi damage) or, like what I’m experimenting on, making the condis last longer.
Remember, too, that, at level 80, you can purchase Ascended Trinkets from the Laurel merchants. My Ranger is fairly competitive in WvW (meaning I’m confident to battle people there; she’s killed her share, yes she does) and quite the little damager in PvE because I took the hit on my laurels (and Globs of Ecto) to give her that edge. She’s a Axe-Torch and Longbow user.
If Gold is low, go for Karma. If you don’t have Exotic armors yet, Orr is a good place to get them for “cheap”, going the Karma route. A full set usually costs around 150k+ Karma or so, at least pre-HOTs.

If you like certain condition builds, using Sinister stats seems to work really well in HoT.
Gold
- They recently nerfed gold from dungeons: it’s gone completely.
- Silverwastes is now the place to be if you need access to a reliable gold intake.
- Some Heart of Thorns plants can be gathered and sold for pretty high prices right now too.
Classes to Play
- Guardian is best lately in either a strong DPS/Toughtness role or Healer/Cleric
- Thief seems to work just fine as the old zerker meta, but Scholars runes have been dropped in favor of vampirism. You’re still going to get one-shot on a thief sometimes no matter what so travel with a friend.
- Necros are doing quite well now it seems like. Especially so if you are really focusing on condition damage as Mordrim in general are pretty week to condition damage.
Masteries to Focus On:
- Mobility, Mobility, Mobility.
- Get everything to do with anything that grants you access to more places. Glider II, Itzel up to Poison, other Frogs II, Exalted access or whatever lets you use their devices…
- Fractal Masteries is probably something good to work on as well
- I didn’t think I would like this, but the auto loot feature is super useful to get eventually as Heart of Thorns is constantly giving you junk loot
It’s Top Down
- HoT is top down. If you’re trying to grind your way up the ladder HoT is way less fun than if you’ve gone about getting a boat load of masteries and then grind down the experience blockage between you and the content you want to play. Otherwise you’re constantly climbing a ladder to nowhere.
Experience is Not Really There
- If you’re having a hard time finding experience it’s not just you. I’ve seen whole groups stop doing events entirely so they can grind some limited few, fast spawning creatures because frankly there’s not enough experience to level a termite. Don’t beat your head against a wall trying to level quickly. It just won’t happen. Accept it and find some way to distract yourself from too much intimate acknowledgement of that reality.
