Q:
Fikfain — Little Purple Sylvari Mesmer
Ascension [WAR] of Borlis Pass
Q:
With all of my characters leveled and lots of sPvP time under my belt, I’ve got a repository of dozens of Tomes of Knowledge and Skill Point scrolls. With the Revenant around the corner, this will be the first character I’ll have which will need leveling again.
Is there any information about whether tomes/scrolls will be allowed to be used on Revenants immediately after HoT releases or not? Sometimes it’s the journey, sometimes it’s the destination. I’m just curious if any thought has been given into whether this is going to be a mandatory journey or not.

Arenanet apparently stated in a recent interview they had no problem with using Tomes to level Revenants at release. You can find it in the “lightning round” summary near the end.
Knowing Anet, that’s a no. I’m sure they would like to take a couple screen caps of all the revenants running around on the new maps to throw on some gaming websites to hype the expansion up further. I would frankly do the same since I don’t care for pve content in this game anymore.
They won’t bar revenant from using tomes.
The only argument that makes sense to bar them from it is the level 80 revenant won’t know how to play because they have no experience with the class…
…But People insta 80 the original classes now and have no idea how to play them so it’s not a good argument.
There is no reason to expect standard game items to function differently because you happened to choose Revenant for your class.
I would personally really like to see a Dev weigh in on this, if for not other reason than to dispel a silly concern people seem to have.
I hate the Leveling experience in this game. its not fun. I have more fun as a max level, because I dont have restrictions on how I want to play.
Forcing us to go through this boring leveling again will be killer.

No one is forcing you to make a new character. Besides, you are free to use tomes or scrolls of experience or whatever.
This would be a swift kick to the Jalis for PVP oriented Revenants, too. There’s really no good reason to block it. If someone has played enough to save up 80+ tomes, they should be able to piece stuff together. They’re not going to be much better at it than leveling one having all of their abilities trickle in in a meaningless fashion anyways. You can’t even make a proper build until 80 anyways, so 1-80 doesn’t do much to help veteran players.
I kinda like the leveling in GW2, but after leveling 6 toons from 1 to 80 and my last 2 toons I leveled from 1 to 60 then used some tomes to get around lvl 70~75 and leveled the rest, I don’t want to level another toon to 80 again.
My plan is to level my rev to 80 instantly, put my asc gear and do map completions at least in the ones that the PS leads me to, besides my minimum of 120 PvP matches, like I did with all other classes.
The whole reason I haven’t thrown away tomes is from saying to myself, “Hey! If they release a new profession, I can level it up instantly to the new content!” If they remove the ability to do that, I’ll be ticked. What’d be the point of barring them from being used. Choices are a good thing. If one person wants to level their rev up the old fashioned way, sweet! They can just not use tomes. If another person wants to play only new content with their rev, the tomes give them the ability to do that. Not everyone wants to have to level again in the old game. There are a lot of us bored to tears of the old game.
if they block that ill just level it up with crafting… if they stop that ill go to eotm. itll just be needless leveling that i can skip and will skip so. what the poin tof blocking it
I have 18 Characters and 4 of them was under the NPE rules .. never again il will level a toon under the NPE it was horrible and frustrating .
I have 1 level 20 scroll , 60 tomes , 360 skill points and 46 gold exclusively reserved for my Revenant. Insta lvl 80 with all skill and traits. All future toons will receive the same treatment.

Are you waiting for the class to be revealed before crafting your gear? if so Im kind of curious what gear you’ll end up crafting for it?

Excellent question , i already have 3 heavy ascended sets that i use and swap around my characters : Soldier , Berzerker and Sinister( i have 4 Guards and 2 Warriors ). I can also use Dungeon tokens to buy different exotic armors to test other stats Combo.
For the Weapons , i have a couple of Legendaries ( selectable stats) that the Revenant can use so i can test weapon stats combo too … well this is my plan. But IMHO , Sinister stats was created for the Revenant.

You could always just build full celestial. You’ll at least deal decent damage and be able to survive everything anyway. Especially with the legend swapping changing your playstyle, it would give you a broader reach with your skills (changing from condition focuses to power focuses, for example, or maybe support when needed).

Good point , like i said i already 3 sets to play with but i guess we will have to wait and figure what will be the best by ourselves when it will be available because the build calculators will take ages to update. An exotic celestial sets sounds good to start with …

celestial set are rarely good. you don’t know anything about the class to be able to suggest building a set that takes up to 60 days to make.

I kept reading, and apparently, china has been getting updates before we do, and apparently they get HOT the same time we do..which doesn’t make any sense. We have had the game for 2yrs, almost 3. they barely had it for 1.

How does this:
For China, ArenaNet has strived for normal patches to come out at or near the same time in China. They will strive to do the same for HoT, but shipping a boxed expansion has a lot more to consider over normal patches.
mean the same as ‘china getting updates before we do’? You sound entitled.

Let’s assume what you are saying is true, IT ISN’T. Arenanet is going to do what is best for their company not us.

Thanks, Galespark, for the answer!
Thanks for letting us know. We really should have been told about the skill point change so that a bunch of us didn’t go farm these for nothing. I know I can still use the tomes, but not saying anything to us about the skill points was really poorly done.

celestial set are rarely good. you don’t know anything about the class to be able to suggest building a set that takes up to 60 days to make.
The celestial set is very good when you’re a class that benefits greatly by having an even distribution of stats. Elementalists and Engineers are excellent examples of how it can be a great set. I only bring up celestial because Revenants will fit a heavy armor jack-of-all-trades role, since each legend will benefit different stat and build types. If you’re legend switching mid combat, you will not be able to switch your armor, so at least with celestial you could maintain decent damage and support.
Also, celestial gear provides about 58% effectiveness in total, without any boons, of any particular gear set. The gear tends to have 30-40% more total stats than any other gear type too, so it’s not like using it will kitten you terribly, unless you’re a dungeon speed runner.
But since those instant 80s won’t have any extra Hero Points to actually unlock their trait lines and utility skill lines you may end up greatly benefiting from burning the tomes about 10 at a time, then doing a few skill challenges (renamed hero challenges) to access a few more lines before burning the next 10 tomes.
It makes going to 80 without wasting points more like 3 hours rather than 20 seconds.
An interesting trade off.
…But People insta 80 the original classes now and have no idea how to play them so it’s not a good argument.
to be fair, it’s kind of difficult to learn a class inside and out when you have next to nothing in terms of trait and utility options. at 80 you have access to everything (once you purchase all of your trait books and skills, of course…) and it becomes a LOT easier to experiment with builds and skills to find what you like best. much harder when you’ve got empty trait slots and not enough skill points to unlock a utility.
You can take Revy to the Mists and be leveled up, anyway.
I had considered using consumable XP but decided it will be more educational and interesting to level without shortcuts so I plan to start at L1 instead of 20 or 80.
Only thing to note is that skill points are changing up so not sure how exactly it will work for insta-80 characters.
