Revenant: Melee power option?
I think you are right, you’re jumping the gun. They will almost surely have MH sword which will likely be a melee power type of weapon (maybe a mix of power and condi).
As for a TH weapon, I agree with a lot of people and hope they do NOT give greatsword. However, I completely believe they will give a staff as a melee weapon. In the original trailer, they showed it. Many thought it a spear (but Anet said this wasn’t so) and then people thought it was hammer, but they just showed the hammer and it is a 1,200 range weapon with no animation that matches the trailer. At this point it is hard to say it isn’t a staff.
I for one, am very psyched about this!

I have to say I’m overly skeptical about them implementing a melee staff. That opens the door to having to implement a completely new set of animations to go along with that…martial arts type animations to go along with staff attacks. That would be a ton of work on top of them already having to rework a ton of other things…after they have already put so much effort into turning hammer into a ranged weapon. I’m not very excited about the prospect of melee attacking with what amounts to a stick either. I’m not saying its impossible though. I’d also note they haven’t introduced a fully ranged condi weapon either. That leaves scepter, long/short bow, or staff. I doubt they’ll clone mesmer GS for this as I assume that mesmer GS is supposed to be a special snowflake.

You make some good points, but I hold to my theory due to a few things:
- Staff can be a very deadly melee weapon. There is an old Chinese story of the greatest swordsman of his time who won every duel and battle he ever fought, save for one. When he fought a vagabond wielding a simple staff.
- If it wasn’t a hammer in the trailer, what was it? The animations are there already
- They made a point in the last POI of saying multiple times that the Revenant uses weapons like no other profession. This applies to the unorthodox hammer use and I think continues to apply to the staff (they did use the plural of weapons)
- They seem to be trying to make the Revenant very unique. How better to do this then to give them unique ways of using old weapons, and not having them rely on the most overused weapon in the game, the greatsword?
I’m just going to assume I am jumping the gun like so many others, but I’m noticing the distinct lack of both a zerk type legend and a melee power weapon.
Ah, so you think the Revenant should have a legend that is superior to all the others in PvE, leading people to using it and nothing else?
Yay -_-
I hope we get:
- Shiro legend: focused on critical damage and mobility, used mostly with dual one handed swords. The attributes of the Shiro related trait line would be Precision and Ferocity.
- Glint legend: focused on support, used mostly with the staff. The attributes of the Glint related trait line would be Healing Power and Boon Duration.
Power would be linked to Invocation, the profession related trait line.

I can see them possibly doing that with a staff..would be interesting at least to see them make that work.
Probably pure power staff, hybrid(utility)sword/dagger. If a weapon combo is directly related to a legend what for the recovery legend? Will staff compete with MH sword? Those speculations are going wild.

So I’m re-reading what I wrote and somehow I fail to see where I said I think that the Revenant should have anything superior to anything in any mode. Strangely enough, I’m also failing to see where I said anything about PvE or what anyone chooses to use in any game mode. Maybe its just me…but that whole comment came off a little kitten? Not quite sure why you apparently think that only bunker and condi should get a legend and not zerk.

I think he means zerk is optional in pve for now so in pve they show other playstyles, conditions may become useful if they keep up with progress from Silverwastes. A major shake may happen based on the changes they will make and new stuff. I believe it’s all for the better so far. Don’t think zerker think raw damage a healing one is missing as well.

I just can’t buy a melee staff; only because it would seem exceptionally lazy on their part. There are a lot of staff skins that make no sense for melee combat; however they have an entire catalog of spear skins in the game that would make much more sense for a polearm (spears would become amphibious weapons). In either case they would have to make new animations for both; so why not use the weapon models built for that kind of thing besides the fact making spears both water and land weapons would give people what they want: effectively a new weapon type.
The weapon we saw Rytlock use was probably a NPC only weapon; like whips, rapiers, and shoulder cannons. NPCs don’t adhere to our rules when it comes to weapons. Rytlock could literally be swinging around an Asura and it would mean just as much.
Personally, I want Greatsword; the reason why Greatsword is so popular is because they have possibly the most visceral skills in the game, and that’s really fun. I’m sure the new tech they have will make a lot of their weapons feel very visceral; just 1-handed sword would be good enough for me, especially if it’s a decent melee direct damage option.
Revenants will more than likely have a direct damage legend and weapons to go along with it. They really showcased the 2 legends and 2 weapon sets that really go together from my point of view.

Power would be linked to Invocation, the profession related trait line.
During the PoI, Invocation, the line that deals with stance switching for the revenant, was revealed to grant bonuses to ferocity. Only ferocity was displayed on the trait line and since the devs themselves said Invocation is the class trait line, it would mean the unlisted bonus would be something to do with the class mechanic(s) of stance switching, or energy regen, or even energy management.
As for a Shiro stance, I sure hope there is one, but I don’t think it would grant bonuses to precision and ferocity. Some of the stats left are power, condition duration, boon duration, and vitality.

Zerk = superior to all other stats in PvE.

Indeed.

So, you don’t think Revenant should have a direct damage option… or in other words, be underpowered in PvE.
I may be an optimist about this, but I think applying the current PvE meta to HoT meta is flawed thinking.
I may be an optimist about this, but I think applying the current PvE meta to HoT meta is flawed thinking.
Let’s assume that the encounters in HoT are so different that the current PvE meta doesn’t apply there.
We would still be left with everything today, everything in the current GW2, being left with a meta strongly focused on zerker and zerker only.
And if you really think ArenaNet is going to rework ALL of PvE, well, that’s not just “optimistic”.
I’m sure the Revenant will have a legend more focused on direct damage. I only hope it isn’t imbalanced, so it’s more effective in PvE than the other legends, just like zerker is current more effective than anything else.
