Revenant is boring to play...
Note that they only released about 25% of Revenant. It’s way too early to make such quick judgement.
Also, in my opinion, I find those utilities very powerful.
Some of them even too OP. I’d make another thread about some of the OP skills though.
This sounds just like personal opinion, I’ve heard the exact opposite from others

I disagree, I think it can work, just, not the way it does now.

how can you tell someone that it’s too early to give an opinion about rev being boring then give an opinion about rev being overpowered?

I loved the Revenant
Well i didnt play the beta but to me the rev looks like 2 moba chars piggybacking and sharing the same life bar and weapons rather then an mmorpg class. Forces 2 skillsets onto you with no way to customise em…cept to arrange them in an order. So far it looks to me like the outfit version of the classes…surpising that the class even got traits you can change..
I feel like you need to treat the legends like elementalists attunements, in part.
For instance, camping in one attunement is not always optimal. Sure, sometimes you might just want to stay in something like fire since it can turn out more damage (at least for staff), but you’ll be missing out on a lot of options if you just stay in it all the time.
With the revenant, swapping to a different legend will automatically reset your energy to 50. This means it’s a good way to regenerate your energy levels back up if you’ve exhausted them using other things (i.e. elite skill, drained it all from hammer spin). Sitting in Jalis form while all your utilities are unusable due to your low energy doesn’t sound like a very effective way to play the profession.
Also, the utilities have seperate cooldowns. So just like elementalist attunements, you can cycle through them to use abilities, even if you’re just sort of using them and not comboing them.
This also applies to the heal skill. If you’re just sitting in Jalis form waiting for your heal skill to recharge while you need some healing, you might consider swapping to Mallyx form so that you can use that heal skill. Otherwise, you’re literally letting your healing skill go to waste. I’m fairly certain that people who got downed fighting the wyvern didn’t bother swapping legends, and just sat there waiting until their heal skill was off cooldown until it was too late.
The Mallyx form also has some unique options that Jalis doesn’t. For instance, the one utility gives resistance to allies and sucks away their conditions. This can be very important support to provide to your allies, especially if they have poor self-cleansing. The elite skill also gives you a stat boost, making it a much better option for doing damage than the Jalis form elite skill.
Lastly, there are also certain traits that work on legend swap. For instance, with 6 into the retribution line (I think that’s what it was called, the third one), you can get a trait that causes legend swapping to be instantaneous, and also causes it to break stuns. This can be extremely valuable as you effectively have a low cooldown stun break.
However, the stress test today only featured PvE. I think a lot of these options are lost in PvE, because condition cleansing, ally support, and stun breaking are only needed in certain measures. I think they would need to let people play smaller scale PvE or some PvP in order for people to really get a sense of how legend swapping can be utilized to it’s fullest extent.
As far as the legends themselves go, I’m not sure that the Jalis and Mallyx legends have the best synergy. The latter definitely favours condition damage oriented builds, although it’s still useful for non-condition builds due to the way it can manage, negate, and benefit from conditions. The Jails form seems to be a bit more “neutral” to me, although I imagine it would function a bit better with a power focused build since the spinning hammers deal direct damage. However, the class is only partially implemented in the beta build, so there’s not a ton of point in having an in depth discussion about these things until we see more legends, traits, and weapons.
I’m more concerned with how the weapons will synergize with each legend. I felt the mace/axe set was a better choice overall in this regard because I felt it benefited much more from each legend, whereas the hammer didn’t benefit from the Mallyx form as much. Of course, everything was restricted to celestial stats, and again it’s not completely implemented, so it’s impossible to really make builds at the moment.
I think it’ll definitely be some time until we get a good sense of how the revenant truly fits into the whole mix.

I love the concept, hate the execution. Having the ability to swap utilities instead of weapons, it’s so mechanics based. Which, it shouldn’t be. Give the utilities some play style rather than strategy.
Plus the resource makes little sense and the only time I find it running low was spamming skills I find weak to begin with.
The way I would put it, imagine playing Guardian, but instead of having a second weapon set, you have a second utility set. Sounds interesting, looks interesting but playing it is so boring. Nothing changes how you play, rather, just more tools to counter and recover.

heh.. if i would have anything to say in the matter there would be an “empty” legend that you can put together yourself from a smaller pool of skills and just dont get any energy to start out when using it…not even the 50% you get usually. That way you would have atleast something to say in your char´s playstyle. 6\6 into 2 legends you pick\remaining 2 whevever is gonna be the one and only build for the class…i mean what else you gonna do? Cant pick your skills, only complete sets and only 1 weapon set…eh.. i stay at my engi.. there i have atleast a say in the matter what kits i want to use together and i can swap out my potions with gadgets if i wanna. Though im not gonna lie the class got an amazing visual appeal to me.. i kittening love the design and the idea…but if i wanna play a moba char i gonna play LOL or something like that and not an mmorpg.

Would you consider the possibility that you just find PvE boring in general? Perhaps it would have been more interesting in a PvP environment.
Also, what do you use to differentiate “play style” from “mechanics”? Is play style more the role and overall actions you take? If so, I’d again point out that the stress test only featured PvE, and the only thing to do there was to kill stuff and CC certain enemies at proper times.

Play style is just that, the way you play. How you connect skills to one another, how you counter act incoming attacks, how you initiate attacks, how you avoid attacks.
Mechanics is numbers, dealing damage, reducing damage, inflicting conditions, reducing conditions.
Mechanics balance play style, so that it doesn’t go into hack and slash to win. It also works vise versa, to much number crunching and you have a hack and slash.
The problem with the current utilities is you don’t use them for play style.
In dark form you can self inflict a bunch of conditions onto yourself and heal a lot more. But that’s mechanics, just number crunching for bigger numbers, it barely affects how you play.
In light form you can grant stability, slow and taunt, once again, number crunching. Even the hammer swirling didn’t add much other than little extra AoE damage.

Atm I’m worried about the whole set in stone skill thing. Pre-determined weapon skills is one thing. But pre-determined weapon, heal, utility AND elite skills? Doesn’t seem like a good idea.
I don’t think this is the case. When I was out of combat with my revenant I saw the little arrows pop up above the utility skills. You know, the arrows that allows you to switch your utility skills. Even above the elite and healing skill it popped up.
This can mean two things:
1) The revenant utility skills are fully predetermined and Anet simply has to clean up the utility UI for the revenant.
2) The revenant in the Beta is incomplete and when HoT launches the revenant will get more utility skills for each legendary and we’ll get to pick and choose between multiple heals, utility skills and elite skills for each legend.
Personally I think option 2 is more likely. The reason why I think this is because it would make sense.
Think about it: Most classes in this game have 5 types of utility skills. For example the guardian has shouts (1), meditations (2), consecrations (3), spirit weapons (4) and signets (5). Each type of skill gives us 4 skills to choose from. For example the guardian has 4 shouts: “Retreat!” (1), “Save Yourselves!” (2), “Stand Your Ground!” (3) and “Hold The Line!” (4).
We know for a fact that the revenant has 5 legendary stances to choose from. You could see each stance as one “type”. Where guardians have meditations, shouts, consecrations, spirit weapons and signets (5 utility types), the revenant will have Jalis, Mallyx, Glint, Ventari and Shiro (5 legendary stances).
Based on this comparison I think it’s safe to assume that the revenant will have at the very least 4 utility skills to choose from for each legendary stance, possibly even more if you consider the fact that the revenant can only use 1 weapon.
So don’t worry, you’ll be able to customize the utility skills on your revenant. Each legendary stance will give you a small pool of utility skills to choose from, I’m sure about that.

I enjoyed playing the rev and the gliding was fun. The mastery system was hard to figure out and needs to be clearer. I wasn’t sold on the content.

Ofcourse. But if you read the rest of my post that you left out in your quote you’d see I have more arguments to back up my statement than just having the arrows popping up out of combat.

^^ This is what I figured about it. Lets you customize where they go, but we’ll have a predetermined set for each hero.
Overall I just have to say I felt the profession was clunky and not really the fast paced fun that Ele/Engi are with their extended skill lists. I could not execute a skill and swiftly change my Hero and use another skill, it bugged me.
That said, it’s far from finished, I just hope it isn’t as slow as it seemed today when it’s all ready.
Well, you guys got to play with a ranged power weapon (in celestial??) with a condition manipulation legend (in pve) and a tank one, with most of the weapons disabled, 3 missing legends, of which, one being the dps legend, as well as the power trait line missing.
It shouldn’t be too hard to connect the dots here, clearly things aren’t ready yet… This is why random test hand outs are such a bad idea… Bad word of mouth from ignorance is not a good thing….

The synergy of the system wasn’t my issue with it, just the play style in general. There’s a lot to polish up. My main concern is the speed of swapping heroes, it’s just slow and clunky to me.

Agreed, in comparison to swapping attunements it’s night and day.

I agree.
In fact I took revenant first and after a quarter i delete the character and took elementalist. Reventant is not yet ready to be tested. Let’s wait.

Well, yes, that’s one of the points. The synergy between legends and weapons is pretty much non-existing. Especially since they seem to be based around different stat sets. And going celestial is not going to fix it, because Celestial in PvE is a really, really bad choice.
Remember, remember, 15th of November

where is the Problem with that?
Legends are made to switch for certain situations just as normal utility skills
(eg even the pure Power Hammer Revenant would use mallyx for AC Spider Boss for condition cleaning) you dont need Sinister-Stats just because you use mallyx as he’s more the “here take back your kitten conditions bro i dont want them”-type
There is a lot of promise with this class! At it’s current state, it’s not ready.

Revenant is boring to play…
Not surprised…they after keep it balanced because of there precious PvP.
All those new healing skills that they did were pretty much utter rubbish/useless/boring. Same with the new traits they have introduced over the past few years and that pass they did over the Sigils/Runes was a TOTAL JOKE and a utter waste of time for all the impact it had.
Let’s face facts Anet have lost the plot and can’t do any exciting skills/abilities. Certainly nothing that is ever going to be any kind of, ‘awesome’.
Well, let’s keep in mind that we only had a limited selection of traits and legends available during the stress test. In this situation, I agree that the class felt somewhat repetitive and boring, mainly because the whole skill-bar was completely set-in-stone with no room for diversity.
However, it might as well be that a broad range of (viable) legends is being worked on, these could be seen and handled in a way that other classes swap their utilities depending on the situation. This would largely negate the lack of a customizable skill-bar.
Personally, I would love to see some flexibility with the legends: Maybe have a range of 6 utility skills per legend available, from which a player then can make a selection (similar system for heal and elite). This would keep the uniqueness of the class but still maintain some level of build diversity.
I had a good amount of fun with the Revenant, especially after getting into how the two weapon sets we had access to functioned, what the Utility skills did between the two Legends, and also after I had a more in-depth look at the Traits available. I even changed it from the default, more tank-oriented build, to it being a bit more of a burst-oriented setup, which relied on switching between the Legends as often as possible. I liked how a bunch of these traits had a duality to them as well, either being damage oriented, or support oriented based on Energy levels. I often found myself in Mallyx’s stance when fighting groups of enemies. That displacement field with Torment is awesome, as it shifts them ever so slightly out of you reach, forcing movement and triggering the stronger Torment damage.
What does worry me however, is if they do not tone down how fast you regain Energy, and with how little recharge periods the profession has, it will be.. well.. overpowered. I hardly ever had issues managing my Energy. And I used skills, constantly. It didn’t help that switching between Legends would let you use two Healing skills, and using one did not affect the recharge of the other. That you also instantly get 50% Energy back and that it actually Stun Break when you swap a Legend felt a bit.. too powerful. It had an overabundance of Stability and I never once felt challenged as if I had even remotely the chance of dying, although that may just be the beta environment and enemies being scaled down to not really present too much of a challenge. Even when I fought the Wyvern alone at some point, I didn’t feel pressured.
There were also a few minor bugs I noticed. Mace #2 didn’t state it was a Combo Field: Fire, even though it was, which is a very minor bug, but I made a report on it regardless. The same field also had some issues with slopes, getting cut in half when traveling on such terrain, another issue I reported on. Otherwise it seemed to function fine.
My favorite weapon set in this test was the Mace/Axe by far. I absolutely loved the mobility it granted. The #4 teleport from the Axe is one thing, but combined with the Mallyx Utility #4 which teleports you to a spot with that shifting displacement mechanic, you can cover some serious distance, comparable to that of thieves currently. It was also extremely easy to maintain mobile Swiftness application with the Dwarf Utility #2 and Mace #3 Blast Finisher, which additionally leaps you forward as you do it, with little to no “pause” at the end of the animation. It was definitely, to me, a fun profession. But I worry about how universally useful it felt, with little to no caveats in its mechanics. Why should anyone play anything but Revenant, when they can near-practically do everything. Currently, this profession felt rather overpowered, at least in PvE. I’d love to get a try at it in Structured at some point, to see how it fares in PvP.
_
Revenant aside, I am very glad to see that even conditions stacks way above 50 did not seem to severely affect game performance. It seemed to run just fine. This is a good thing, because I have loathed the condition caps since launch. At last they may have resolved the issue with people running conditions oriented builds in PvE. That’s a great thing. Finally that will bring these builds up to par with the physical damage dealers, who suffers no such cap. Imagine if your every attack would whiff when more than 25 players were attacking the same target, because there were a physical damage cap. I can’t wait to see what they do with this forwards. While I mainly run physically oriented builds, it’d be nice to see some variety in our PvE Community.

The reason why I am bringing it up now is I am hoping it’s not the direction the class is going.
- Ironically, it had some of the most interesting traits I’ve seen so far. Puts every other class to shame, granted, there wasn’t nearly as much traits as other classes but it’s clear they put the fun ones in.
_
- In contrast, it had some of the most boring utilities so far and when your class is utility swapping focused, that’s not good. The issue was the utilities was that they behaved like utilities, the demon stance swap is the biggest culprit.
I want to feel like a powerful demon while inflicting denial, instead it was, “oh? You got boons? Swap stances, remove, swap back.” Dwarf stance, the first two utilities felt right, the swirling hammers felt out of place. You got ally support, ally support and… tickle AoE damage?
I get it, swirling hammers and dwarfs but where is the ally supporting focus?
Demon stance is purely situational, making it a rarely used and very boring stance.

@Absconditus.6804
I tried using the mace and mallyx stance, I still found the utilities too situational. I could use Unyielding Anguish, or I could move and fight like I always do :\
Not that Unyielding Anguish is bad mechanically wise, but it doesn’t add to how I play, it just adds damage.

Do you even show up at beta?
Sounds like you’re just guessing random stuff and trash talk for fun.
I tried various combo of Rev, and with just a 25% completed class, I find it powerful and engaging, requires alot of multi-task and active playing to make it effective. I think it’s more busy to control revenant than controlling an ele. Some traits such as summon hammer is quite interesting and useful too.
Guess you’re either just trash talking for fun, or either HoT is not for you.

lol, maybe it’s a L2P issue.
Demon stance is very strong and has lots of uses. Cleanse, free boom removal + confusion, and the 9th skill can easily CONTROL a whole group of enemies and cause mess CC bar depletion during burn phase on boss fight.

I disagree, I found the stance incredibly weak and little reason to stay in it.
Numberwise, it’s really good, boon denial, AoE torment spamming, condition drawing and condition copying.
Playing wise… It’s boring as hell. Banish Enchantment was situational, Unyielding Anguish was more condition spam, Pain Absorption was too situational and the elite, too situational.
I guess it’s because of the area it felt limiting and boring? I know there are going to be more stances and utilities, but this should get looked at. Don’t dedicate an entire skillbar for situational use.
Also, demon stance doesn’t have any condition cleansing. Did you not play the beta?

Demon stance is purely situational, making it a rarely used and very boring stance.-
@Absconditus.6804
I tried using the mace and mallyx stance, I still found the utilities too situational. I could use Unyielding Anguish, or I could move and fight like I always do :\
Not that Unyielding Anguish is bad mechanically wise, but it doesn’t add to how I play, it just adds damage.lol, maybe it’s a L2P issue.
Demon stance is very strong and has lots of uses. Cleanse, free boom removal + confusion, and the 9th skill can easily CONTROL a whole group of enemies and cause mess CC bar depletion during burn phase on boss fight.I disagree, I found the stance incredibly weak and little reason to stay in it.
Also, demon stance doesn’t have any condition cleansing. Did you not play the beta?
In ways, he/she is not wrong. You, can cleanse your allies and grant yourself immunity through Resistance, often enough to have the conditions do nearly nothing to you while they time out. It’s an active cleanse of sorts.
Seafarer’s Rest
There is a lot of promise with this class! At it’s current state, it’s not ready.
Really? In the first beta test? It’s not ready? Shocking.

Also, demon stance doesn’t have any condition cleansing. Did you not play the beta?
Yes, I do present in the Beta, and spent a good 3 hours testing all the Revenant skills in events and Wyvern. (I purposely avoid zergy map so I can actually try out kittens)
I did Wyvern 6 times, and spend a great deal of time try to solo mini bosses and 1 v 6 foes and fight Wyvern with 5 people several times and etc. Mallyx is capable of mess controlling a whole group of enemies, and mace-axe is a very good weapon set.
Also you’re not suppose to “camp” into one stance, you suppose to switch around according to situation. If you’re in dire danger, you should switch back to jalis and pop a defensive skill or something, and then summon hammer to quickly drain Jalis’s bar so you don’t waste your energy when you switch back to Mallyx.
Edit: I also heard people can abuse the 8th skill to stack up to 99 stack of confusion on an enemies. (5 stack of confusion per cast, and no CD) I can imagine how much chaos Revenant is capable of in PVP.

How hard is it to have mobs and bosses that focus on condition damage, enough to make condition hate a thing in pve. It’s always minimal…

That is EXACTLY the problem.
“Switch around according to situation.”
The reason why I love playing the Elementalist in PvE and PvP, is that you always want to switch, it rewards you for being active.
I also love playing the engineer in PvP, but find it the most boring class in PvE. The reward comes from your active enemy, not you.

Just because you have the tools, doesn’t mean you have the fun :P

I though gameplay was clunky and I wondered why I was hitting like a wet noodle, then I saw that I was in celestial gear, and had an awful trait setup.
I though gameplay was clunky and I wondered why I was hitting like a wet noodle, then I saw that I was in celestial gear, and had an awful trait setup.
That’s just it. No real matching components were in the stress test to make a valid opinion on…
There was a condition weapon and condition stance, but no pvp or high condition incoming.
There was a ranged power weapon but celestial gear and no power stance or trait line.
Celestial is meh across the board and is mostly useful in pvp with the right set ups.
Nothing of a natural set and circumstance even aligned to get any real feel for the class and it’s uses…
It’s like having the power tree (spite) and blood magic tree and being surprised when having only access to scepter, focus and staff, your celestial Scepter/Focus builds feel awful in pve. There’s no grounds for judgement, really. This was a stress test, NOT a “check out the Revenant!” Test.

It does show the direction that the Revenant is going.
I’ve stated this before, it’s a good base, just build it in a different direction. Which I’m sure they’ll do, there are going to be lots of changes between now and release.

I just hope it’s enough changes. Otherwise we’re going to have Revenant joining the Necromancer and Engineer ranks of boring PvE classes.
From what was available, Maxe/Axe was more fun to use for me than the Hammer. Also I was staying in Mallyx stance for most of the time because it’s abilities felt more responsive and fun compared to Jallis’.
While I can understand some of your points, I think you are forgetting your personal opinion have a subjective value, not an objective one, Nova Strike.
You can’t expect for what you find boring to be “objectively” boring to everyone. An example: FOR ME, the engineer is the most fun and interesting class to play in PvE.
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”
