I am super excited about what we read in the deep dive today mechanically, but I was a little disappointed to find there was absolutely no story or lore about the how and the why of revenants.

We know that Rytlock is the first revenant, and we know that he either discovers or develops these powers in the Mists and retains some sort of constant connection to it.

But when Rytlock returns to Tyria, is he still fully Rytlock, or has the Mists fundamentally changed who and what he is? Can he teach these skills to others, or must all aspiring revenants experience the same things Rytlock has to become one? When a revenant taps into that connection to the Mists and becomes an avatar of Mallyx, are they still in control of that mind-space, or is the influence of the demon also competing for control?

Inquiring minds want to know! Since we are starting at level 1 I am deeply curious what the backstory of our revenant characters will be.

you might want to read into the ritualist, as rits are essentially revenants, conceptually speaking. revenants are just more… hands-on with their approach to summoning spirits.

Some of that may be tied to story elements they don’t want to spoil. Still it would be nice to get some snippets so we can start mulling over RP backgrounds. None of the stuff in the blog gives me any ideas for race/story for my revenant.

Indeed! Though it certainly never hurts to ask; there might be things that could be described more generically that won’t be much of a spoiler.

though it’s worth pointing that the dervish avatar connection is purely mechanical, as dervish avatars drew power from the gods themselves.

Of course, I should have made that clearer.

There is also a chance that Anet will only mention the story connection outside of the game while the calss will function like any other inside of the game. While it would be fancy, I doubt we will see a seperate personal story or even any story connection in-game. I personally await the Revenant to just be another class story-wise. Different mechanics, yeah, but story-wise, you will just go through what all the other classes went through.

And also, how do Sylvari Revenants exist, when Rytlock, the very first Revenant, is a virulent anti Sylvari racist?

Yeah, I imagine there will be some awkward timey-wimey-ness to personal story stuff, given that I doubt they’re going to redo the whole thing even though the first revenant only existed three years after the events of Zhaitan. I could always be pleasantly surprised, though!

Frankly though, I’m less interested in what they choose to do with your leveling experience – personally, I ignore personal story anyway, since the fifteen characters I have can’t ALL be commander of the Pact and best buddies with Destiny’s Edge.

I’m more curious about what the actual lore of the class itself is. How does one become a revenant and connected into the Mists? A lot of other classes are pretty self-explanatory as to the basics of how and why they exist, but revenants are a different animal, so to speak.

Ritualist use urns and ashes to reanimate and rituals to summon spirits.
Dervishes use a sort of channel to manifest the powers of gods.

Revenant channels the “Legends” to obtain their specific traits.

So Revenant is much closer to Dervish than Ritualist.

Appart from the spirit theme Revenant and Ritualist couldn’t be further appart.
Necromancer is much closer to ritualist.
