Rytlock wielding a spear?
sorry to burst your bubble but that clearly looked like a staff to me, the way Rytlock is wielding his weapon is reminiscent of the Bo staff style of combat. if they were adding completely new weapons I would think they would have talked about them during the announcement.
his hit animation is quite slow for a Bo, i think its onland-spears
Well TECHNICALLY, a spear isn’t really a new weapon. Its a previously underwater-only weapon, but they do exist in the game.
So maybe if they did make spears wieldable only land, they wouldn’t really count it as a new weapon.
It may be a spear, and if it is then it may be specific to the revenant class. That will all be learned once more information is released about the expansion.
looks bladed on the end on one side like a destroyer skin. awful funny look for a staff…
hmm good point, however it could be the camera angle hiding it I didn’t see a spear head.
dangit guys you are making me watch the trailer again to pause at every frame! mock rage
There are multiple examples of spears/lances in that trailer. It’s pretty safe to bet its a new weapon.
Bare in mind, there are also new class/weapon combinations in that trailer not directly addressed in the presentation. They seem to be keeping some secrets
I think if they include new weapons it would be part of the presentation.
Ozgar, you made me wonder if maybe this is the Revenant “channeling” melee fighting with a staff?
I thought it was more conclusive than I thought. I watched it several more times & I don’t have a ‘definite’ feel anymore. I do think it looks a lot like a spear though.
Dat quality pic..
Personally, to me, it looks too short to be a staff and it appears to have a point and spikes at the end. If it is a staff, it’ll be really silly looking to use those animations with some of the staff skins we have.
Can you imagine those swinging animations with a staff skin like this: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/8/8d/Super_Staff_Skin.jpg
Or this:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/f/f5/Hymenoptera.jpg
Or, imagine Bi-frost being swung around like that; a completely blunt staff with this almost slashing type animation.
I’m just saying, that if that’s a staff, this seems extremely lazy and shoehorned. However, if it’s a spear it would be much tidier.
For example; look at these spear skins:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/d/da/Legionnaire_Spear.jpg
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/a/ad/Quetzal_Harpoon.jpg
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/images/b/be/Royal_Ascalonian_Harpoon.jpg
Don’t these skins look more similar to the kind of weapon Rytlock is swinging? Not to mention more conducive to the animations being displayed.
I can’t really be bothered to look it up, but i’m fairly sure some interview out there states that that isnt a spear, but a staff.
So dont get your hopes up.

I was just trying to find that same interview but couldn’t find it.
Colin says something like “We thought this would be an issue and we warned the art team that it could be taken the wrong way but they went ahead with it anyway, but no, no land spear weapons”
It might be a hammer with spear skin cause he definitely using is as a blunt weapon.

Well if they doing that, then I want more hammer and great swords with Great Axe skins.

Like I said, I was trying to find it but didn’t have any luck. I’m still looking but I’m half asleep so it’s quite likely I overlooked it 10 web pages ago…

Sadly no, i dont tend to store links for “future reference” so you can choose to believe it or not i dont really care , maybe Psizone will have some luck finding it.

Think I found it, was a reddit post from someone that was apparently at the afterparty and had a little Q and A with Colin.

Well like I said. If true, I want the art team to start making Hammers and Great Swords using Great Axe skins as well since they making staffs with spear skins ….
Why do people keep spreading so much misinformation. The only thing Colin has said about this is from this https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/2tsiox/pax_afterparty_lessons_learned/, ‘Colin said “We warned the art team what the community would think when they saw the trailer, but they chose to make things the way they did.” It looks like a polearm.’ Polearms have been confirmed as not being added, but there has been no clarification on spears seeing terrestrial use.
We talked polearms. No polearms in this expansion. Colin said “We warned the art team what the community would think when they saw the trailer, but they chose to make things the way they did.”
It looks like a polearm but it is not. No word if they ever will be.
From the Reddit link provided by psizone.

Ninja’d it in ahead of your post, letting you know in case you don’t check the post since there won’t be a new message icon.
Polearms have been confirmed as not being added, but there has been no clarification on spears seeing terrestrial use.
Because terrestrial spears ARE polearms.
Polearms include melee spears, halberds, glaives and more long sticks with stabby-slicey bits.
Obviously, the art team loves polearms… They’re all over the art cinematic at the end of the last Living Story, and they’re even in the trailer for HoT too. Too bad the devs don’t have the same mindset.

Could just be a staff, there are polearm looking staff skins already in game.

I dont believe its a staff.. If its one then gratz to art team for the most stupid animations ever.
Maybe we’re thinking too hard about it. It’s entirely possible that Rytlock has a polearm and players just won’t. Colin says it was the doing of the art team, so the art team might have elected to give Rytlock a polearm despite there being no mechanics in place for the players. Kinda like Rytlock using an off-hand pistol as a warrior, or the nightmare court using whips.

Technically yes, but also technically they all lead to different enough fighting styles. A halberd for example relies on heavier blows and more horizontal space. Also note that Anet held them to be different enough to be developed separately to spears they just didn’t make it to the final stages. The fact that he didn’t clarify further and because we don’t know the Revenant or all the specialisation armaments it’s still more than possible.
It might be a hammer with spear skin cause he definitely using is as a blunt weapon.
who the hell stabs with a hammer?
fun fact: these animations are new, and this it the first two-handed stab animation in the whole game.
honestly, this whole thing confuses the hell out of me. we have (unofficial) sources that say devs confirmed there are no spears or polearms of any sort being added to the game. then we have rytlock stabbing mordrem to death with what is clearly a spear.
the problem with it being a staff skin like many assume is that GW2 staves look visibly not made for martial combat. basing an entire profession’s usage of staves on “oh, i just hope they adopt the spear skin” is so odd. not to mention it looks far too short to be a staff skin. most staves are taller than the user, at most the same height.

I dont see any stab/thrust here..
i’m not putting my hopes up but using spears and polearms is always my preferred choice in games that have them, just my personal usage i guess Would differently be nice to see it, also maybe they have some kind of weapon channel move like elementalists can conjure weapons, maybe revenant can channel a weapon in there hand i don’t know. just a wild guess
personally i see it as a polearm and not a staff-staff.
which is wierd considering we’re missing a 2-hand axe. :/ (we get the third heavy but no greataxe?)
Looks very obviously like a staff. Besides Spears on land/polearms are already confirmed not happening.

This.
To further drive home the point, there are already quite a few Staves that look like Spears/Polearms/melee weapons:
- Aureate Staff
- Beaded Warstaff
- Dredge Pillar
- Final Rest (obviously)
- Guild Pillar
- Kodan Staff
- Krait Crook
There are more, but I think that’s enough.
Hyperbole is the absolute worst thing in the universe.
The problem with the idea that it could be a staff, is the number of staves in the game that would be absolutely ridiculous to use as a melee weapon. Many of them are either very ornate(in delicate looking ways) or too ridiculously shaped to be a viable “ima hit you wit dis” weapon.
It’s akin to using stabbing animations as the most common animation for a hammer’s abilities just because “well look, some of the hammer skins have a pokey bit at the end”.
It just doesn’t make sense, you can’t base a weapon around a few select skins that happen to be viably usable in that way.
Even some of the skins linked by BladeRain. Could you really see someone swinging Final Rest, the supposedly obvious choice of a scythe, in the way Rytlock was wielding the weapon in question? We’re working with a very limited amount of footage here, but I couldn’t see it being used that way.
