So basically monks aren't a profession...

because ANet only realized their ridiculous views against healing were stupid a few years later?
Surprise!! =P…..

Healing have existed in the game since release. Why do people keep talking like healing is something that was just revealed with Druid?

Not a very pleasant surprise. :p

True, but the premier support class from GW1 was never included in GW2 because ANet were years too slow to realize their folly, and that really bothers me.

Or maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t included because it was directly tied to the Human Gods and thus wouldn’t make all that much sense for any other race?

Yes, this is obviously why there were dwarf and char monks. Last time I checked, all magic came from the bloodstones, not the human gods. Monk “prayers” are no exception.

Because the meta people did a fantastic job deterring its acceptance. Hilarious IMHO, all their effort in pushing their ideals has had a reverse effect and has quite literally blown up in their own face as the outcry to make it stronger has slowly but consistently gotten even louder as the zerker meta grasped tighter on PvE.
Things could have been different but no one wants to listen to reason, all these meta people needed to do was be more progressive with build acceptance.

almost every species in the game had a healer archetype that used monk prayers.

IllegalChocolate, but that means going slower, not skipping mobs, and (GASP!) a run taking longer than absolute max speed with full meta zerkers and no screw ups! We can’t have THAT now can we?!
You do realise don’t you that the goals of whatever new meta arises will be exactly the same as the current meta: sacrifice only as much damage potential as is needed to give the fastest clear time.
Right now that means things like slotting reflects or condi clears instead of more dps boosters since nulling attacks lets you spend more time attacking and less time defending. In raids the method might be different but the result will be the same. Getting as much dps as possible is always going to be the goal.

Actually no, the goal isn’t getting as much dps as possible the goal is reducing the overall TTK or TTCO as much as possible which dps like many other variables is a part of, this is why you slot a utility skill like shield of avenger to nulify projectiles so you can maximise a DPS window without needing to do anything defensively or using various speed boosting movements in dungeon running to byspass entire groups of mobs in a dungeon speed clear which has nothing to do with effective DPS but has significant weight in overall TTCO. DPS is a tool used in the overall equation, the problem being the actual stats of power, precision, ferocity having too much of a weighted variable in the overall equation. The preference is that the act of using other archetypes like a full clerics BP guardian provides a competitive multiplicative in overall TTCO or TTK like for example amplifying combat window time overall for other actual dps in a group setting.
The preference in balance is that more and different variables can be interchanged and still maintain a strong and competitive result in overall TTCO or TTK.
EDIT: for definitions
TTK = time to kill
TTCO = time to complete objective (in the case of dungeons, time to complete the overall dungeon)
EDIT 2: obviously a nomads necromancer shouldn’t be out dpsing a zerker ele, but a nomads necromancer should be providing other variables that can act as a multiplier for other players in the group that is overall competitive in a maximized environment.

Anet gave rangers a dedicated healer as an elite spec and that is fine. People got the whole “there isn’t a holy trinity” idea wrong. Anet said you can play like you want, so they meant you are able to fill all roles (healer, tank, supporter, damage deaer….) with all professions in this game. The first elite specs will make some of the professions better at doing some of these roles, but everyone is still able to do so.
It isn’t like in gw1, where a monk HAS to heal and a warrior MUST tank. Just do what you like to do. Future elite specs will give another profession strong healing and maybe ranger is getting more damage or tank potential… we will see.

the warrior tanking and monk healing were actually optional variants in GW1. Many hard mode missions preferred hybrid comps in high speed clears, generally because in some areas of the game, the preferred strategy had various players either splitting off solo or in pairs to maximize objective completion efficiency. Yes some of this “hybrid” meta comps just consisted of 6 assassins and a couple monks just in case someone screwed up but just to be clear, tanks and healing monks weren’t backbone mandatory in gw1 either.
EDIT: in some cases smite hybrid monks were preferred for some of the farms.

This is such a confusing sentiment that you lot keep parroting.
If we can do it a certain speed, why would we decide to run weaker gear and do it at a slower speed.
????
Why would we do that

There is a misconception in overall statistical capability of many options in this game in contrast to what some players want out of the game.
There are some who actually believe that the content is quite literally “impossible” unless everyone is running zerker meta builds who also don’t care for going for a sub 30 and actually think the idea of playing a healer is completely pointless despite the fact that sub 30 trios with a healer has been known to be possible in fotm 50
There are some who actually literally cling to the zerker meta elitism despite the fact that they don’t even know how to control mai trin properly and then complain when they go down over and over again screaming at other people
The preference is that we work as one to explain every single option available to everyone for what they want to achieve so that they can themselves come up with their own decisions for what is right for them as a person with no bias no elitism and no discrimination.
I have been trying to tell all of you this for the past 2 years, none of you listened and now you lose the thing you value the most.
Look at the forums now, people think the healer was born when the druid was introduced. Not even close. The healer has been around for a very long time now and the act of using one had an almost negligible effect on overall TTCO, no more than 10%ish at most while also reducing relative risk by well over 90% especially if you just carelessly yoloed everything which no offense, based on what I’ve seen, alot of you zerker meta activists could use in your life from what I’ve seen.
The fact that people are making more “omg trinity is born 1337kapparainbow DansGame” posts as we discuss only proves my point further.
Healers actually only needed a small push to make it more competitive but its getting buffed overboard yolo complete with a specialization around the whole concept of healing (not complaining) while you lose your precious ice bow. I personally could care less though I’m not the one in heat over the entire subject.

“The meta” is not a single thing… Meta players aren’t going to think healing has destroyed the meta – if healing is required in raids healing will be added to the meta, THATS WHAT META MEANS. Its an evolving system that seeks out optimal setups – the reason it is purely damage with avoidance support is because that is currently optimal.

I remember that, when gw1 first came out a healer was “required” but after a while it kind of wasn’t as much. I always used to enjoy using some ritualist group protection build or have necro/monk partials was fun. Or before the mm nerf you’d do a full group of necros to see how many minions you could get. =) good times.
