I will focus on BO as he was the first to release when I did the first post.
I got 9 point out of his video, so I’m gonna try to respond to all of them.

These deals are amazing for new players
Yes they are: all of them.
The issue is that they are horrible for existing player
The standard is a rippoff.
The deluxe only come with digital goodie and the famous slot.
The ultimate wins hands down thank to one thing: the 4000 gems.
So for existing player the better deal is the costly one.

Anet don’t want to have to deal with playerbase with either HoT or Core GW2, so no too two license instance
I do think he have a valid point here.
But how every other MMO deals with people not having an expansion and Anet can’t ?
I’m genuinely interested there.

We haven’t seen all the content of HoT (PVE more exactly)
I agree on that too. So let’s wait & take a decision after.
We are not forced to pre purchase right now & we can still vote with our wallet later on.

What’s the reward for playing the game as an existing player
To me, this is a non issue.
Current existing player decided to play the game & enjoyed it.
Newcomers didn’t, it’s their choice. Thus for me it’s off-topic regarding the current situation.

WOW example
I really like this example because everyone is milked the same way.
Mind you as Oct 2014 Blizzard offered all previous expansions to owner of the base game & put the new expansion at 50$ (correct me if I’m wrong).
For all players that owned all the expansions they got rewarded with reduction on the store from Blizzard as loyal customer.
To me this is good customer relation (& I loathe blizzard normally).
Anet adopted the opposite direction; they gifted newcomer & say no no to existing player.
To me this is really bad customer relation.

cashshop revenue
I don’t recall exactly but seems like the average revenue on the cashshop is 4$ per player per year.
Here a link; https://www.superdataresearch.com/blog/mmo-arpu/
I’m not completely sure of the source so take it with a grain of salt.
He is totally right to point toward whales.
But here that’s what’s my personnal experience:

I’m a whale as I spend up to 50$ on cashshop per month.
Right now, I’m in utter disgust of how Anet treated existing player and I’m seriously thinking about leaving.
I have no proof of that but I would think that most whales are really dedicated player more than newcomer at least.
I don’t think that I’m the only whale that this issue has seriously upset.

This issue could be a major whale drawback for Anet.

Character slot precedent
Really good point considering Anet past on the matter.
Add to that: players begged for the character slot in this topic :
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/hot/Character-Slot-for-Heart-of-Thorns-Merged
Yet it only get introduced in the last two versions which only the last one is interesting for existing player.

ANET ninja edit of FAQ
I don’t think that Anet ninja edit of the FAQ right before the annoucement is good commercial practice by any mean.
They should have clearly stated a plan about this during the announcement in order to come out clean.
This just amplify the flash sell at 10 $ & makes what’s follow worst.
Add to that the current official answer that even if you bought the game 2 months ago at 40$;
– You have to pay HoT at 50$ without any compensation
or
– Ask for a reimboursement, update & loose all your progress.

Physical collector
No physical collector: yes that sucks.

TDLR
Now what I think Anet have always been very bad at handling communication.
It happened countless time to have player wishes totally misinterpreted.
The last one that upset me was the NPE as I have been playing the game since launch.
But there were plenty over mild instance that I can’t recall right now.

Where it’s start to really hurt is :
– The FAQ edit & flash sells
– The ultimate being the only decent deal for veteran while newcomers get an heck of a deal.
– The slot denied behind the ultimate version or 10$ possible suplementary bucks.
– The recent existing player not allowed to keep their progression or forced to buy the expansion full price.
All of these make a lot of stomach at once, thus the outcry.

This is by far Anet biggest blunder to date.
That’s just my 2 cents on the issue. Feel free to post.

I do agree that the argument should be around the cost vs. value issue, not the “what do we get” that so many people latch on to (on both sides, both the people complaining and the people throwing “entitlement” around like mud in a political debate).

Disagree with him using WoW’s expansion pricing as an example of what’s standard though, a lot of people have made the claim that $50 is normal pricing for an MMO’s expansion, but as far as I can tell that’s only true for WoW. It’s certainly not true for FF14 or SW:TOR, at the very least.

cashshop revenue
I don’t recall exactly but seems like the average revenue on the cashshop is 4$ per player.

I’m curious where that number comes from, we do have access to the NCSoft’s reports on sales and profits that each game generates (minus royalties), but without solid numbers on active accounts it’s hard to accept its validity. If it’s true then I can understand (and accept) the price, but until then it’s hard to accept an expansion that offers less than traditional expansions (not a speculation, this is what I distinctly remember Colin saying in a post HoT announcement interview) but charges as much as a full game.

Overall I like his video, it’s fair for the most part and I respect his attempt to stay neutral.

Good video, I agree with his point at around 4:00 in which this (probably) was an attempt to streamline all clients with the base game and expansion. It was poorly done and blows my mind that noone at Anet/NCSoft thought about selling JUST the expansion to original game owners.

I couldn’t care less for new players getting base game in the package, i’m cool with that, got my money’s worth form core gw2 long ago.

What riles me up is that they’re not providing character slot for us vets for their payed new profession. Even kitten F2P games run by Nexon of all the publishers don’t go there and give players reasonable opportunities for free character slot when new class comes out.

So a vet has to get higher version of HoT (deluxe or ultimate) or make a sacrifice if his character slots are full – 800 gems, delete a character, or no revenant.
That and imho i’ve seen to little so far to justify the price.

Summing up: My beef is not with new players getting better deal – they could get ferraries with their version for all i care. My beef is with us old players are getting milked for cash in such a sleezy way, instead of common sense courtesy, that even the bottom of business ethic barrel publishers provide.

His Argument of what he thinks arena net wants is flawed. Big time.
If he was in touch with the community, isntead of the staff, he’d probably read many people saying they’ll just keep playing the base game, specially the ones that bought more recently are all saying they’ll keep with base and buy the expac when the price drops.
So basically you’ll always have people with just the core game with this, but instead of the newbies that still have to play the first part of the content to get to HoT, you have older players who already have played to be at HoT status, and might get frustrated and quit.
So yes, marketing faux pas, low consideration for older players, overall cash grab (towards the older players)
All that rolled into one big debacle.

On the contrary. They are the only ones with an intelligent opinion. The rest of this forum is a mindless rant fest at the moment. Normally, I hate the word “entitlement,” but that’s precisely what’s going on here.

The ONLY and I mean ONLY bad practice is the invalidation and misadvertisement of all of the recent Guild Wars 2 core game sales by wrapping the core game into the expansion. 1 year+ players are owed nothing – they’ve gotten the time from their game. The price can only be debated based on the content we actually receive, and that’s yet to be seen in either direction.

I agreed with some of what he said. Just wait. That’s what I’m doing. I’m not paying anything until I get more information. What they’ve released so far, for me, doesn’t justify the $50. And their shady / incompetent marketing hasn’t helped either.

They don’t say that stuff because they first THINK and make an opinion about the whole thing instead of ranting on the forums like the braindead toxic part of the community did. Then they evaluate and form their opinion. And they never ‘hate’ anything, they might disagree or be upset, but why would they -hate- the game they love.
They both said they will pay but for what was shown the price is steep. So yes, they agree with you. Did they blast the fora with toxic waste for 48h long ? No.

Is the pack overpriced in your honest opinion? Fine, don’t buy it. Give your feedback in the fora and why you think it is steep. Or better, don’t preorder and wait what it will give in the long run.

But don’t come ranting on the fora about something just so you can rant. Ranting =/= giving feedback.

I for one was expecting the price to be lower. I am going to wait if they offer 800gems/char slot and if not accept that I have been playing a great MMO for 3 years and I am willing to invest another 99 euro in it for years to come.

(The amount of crap would have been a lot less if they didn’t offer the free game, and it would be just about the price. But people keep twisting it around and around just to ba able to rant and rant.)

They’ve bundled it for free with the expansion. So what?

You don’t go out and buy a $60 game off of Steam on its release week and then complain that it is on sale for 75% off a couple years later. You don’t complain when said game is given for free to PSN/XBOX live players some years down the line.

It’s just part of the whole process. Games get devalued over time, and you are NOT entitled to a refund or bonus when that happens.

And don’t even claim that this is different because it’s an MMO. That’s a load of kitten. They charged us one time. Over that time, we’ve enjoyed hundreds, if not thousands of hours of gameplay. We’ve enjoyed exclusive living story content and rewards. By Balthazar’s balls, we’ve had shots at black lion sets before their price shot to the top of Mount Olympus – new players won’t be able to claim many of the game’s best skins for less than 200g (or much higher).

Playing a game is its own kitten reward – and they have continually rewarded us further by giving us FREE living world content (which, by the way, new players have to buy) and free updates, unlike some other companies that charge for expansions on top of a subscription and a cash shop.

How many sequels are released with the prequel bundled in? Quite a few. Bayonetta ringing a bell?

WoW bundles its previous expansions together for free. Its community doesn’t complain. EverQuest did the same.

There’s literally no difference. Its an incentive. You’re an existing customer for the cable company but they’re not going to give you the free incentives they give new customers and you’re an existing GW2 player, they’re not going to give you the free incentives they want to give new customers. Its the same thing, GASP!

Demanding a cheaper product in gw2 simply because “I’ve been here longer (while ignoring that fact that you’ve already gotten something out of your time, but hey that doesn’t help your point does it)” would be like you calling your cable company and demanding you pay less simply because you’ve been around longer. Not it’s not the same thing for one simple reason:
Your case: it’s an incentive on a product that you already contracted & the offer is for new customer.
You are already a client for that product. They are not, thus the incentitive.

Our current problem:
The product isn’t GW2; it’s the expansion HoT.
Neither existing player of GW2 or new player are player of the expansion yet

One group get an incentitive : the core game (that’s fine by me).
Other group get no incentitive & are supposed to fork more money to have a good deal. (that’s not fine).

Demanding a cheaper product in gw2 simply because “I’ve been here longer (while ignoring that fact that you’ve already gotten something out of your time, but hey that doesn’t help your point does it)” would be like you calling your cable company and demanding you pay less simply because you’ve been around longer. You’re an entitled brat in both cases.

Uninformed people love to parrot the word “entitled”.

You are comparing a subscription service only one of the two imaginary customers pays for, to a single purchase product both customers will buy. And the funny thing is that cell phone providers, who too offer a subscription service, tend to reward their loyal customers.

How about actually watching the video and deciding if he’s impartial based on what he says instead? As a person who has been complaining about the $50 price tag, I find what he says to be mostly reasonable.

I thought it was a rational video. He even pointed out right at the start that there would be people who didn’t believe a word he said because of his sponsoring from ANet even though they have no control over his comments and said that if you believed him a corporate shill you should likely just stop watching the video.

Yes, he may well have some bias in their favor just because he likes the game enough to spend his time playing and promoting it, and because he has met many ANet people in person and had a chance to see that they aren’t faceless demons out to savage us all. That doesn’t mean he’s going to sing praises he doesn’t believe.

But hey, apparently having a good opinion of anything ANet does makes those of us who enjoy what they do shills, white knights, and fanboys/girls without volition of our own.

Note: I do think the price is ten dollars higher than it should be. I do think it would have been a classy move to add another character slot to all versions. I do think they absolutely should give not refunds (which would mean closing the account) but discounts to those who bought the game to prepare for HoT based on the FAQ as it was written. But I also think the amount of vitriol over all this is a mind boggling example of how lynch mobs form and how they develop mental shields impervious to rationality.

BogOtter said he’s not one to go into rages, he likes to see all sides. Anyone looking for a frothing demagog to confirm their own bias against ANet had fair warning their views would not be catered to. ANet made some mistakes, BogOtter pointed them out, and he did it constructively. He’s a good example, not a sell out.

Can’t watch it even if the video were to agree with my point of view. He is supported by Arena Net and talking specifically about their game, I find that ethically wrong.

Actually, you have a pretty basic misunderstanding here. The players asking for a character slot are asking to NOT be discriminated against, to not be treated more poorly than the new players. The new player gets the whole game as a “gift” which they can most certainly use. The existing player gets no “gift”.

Behaving as if the existing players are being so unreasonable to ask for something as a small gift they can actually use, when all new players get a great gift they can use, isn’t entitlement, it’s asking to be treated with the same amount of respect.

So here’s a question… that “beta” character slot I/we get for pre-purchasing… we get to keep that, right?

Did the first beta test and it gave me the beta slot. Didn’t get into second beta test and the beta slot was gone. So no you won’t get to keep that slot.

Frankly I don’t think the argument “other MMO’s are doing it” is a good reason to defend poor customer treatment, and an overpriced product.

Thats because it is a logical fallacy that only a fanboy would attempt.

Actually this one backfired on him.
Because when WoW did it (not exactly the same than with GW2).
They offered freebies to existing players that owns all add ons.

You also have to pay a monthly fee for wow so the freebies you got you actually were paying for.

LMAO, he starts off with saying Anet fly him over to his offices to test out new stuff, as well as support him. So why should we listen to what he says now? Everything he says will of course be to please his masters.

Anet never flew me out anywhere, doesn’t support me yet I agree with his video. Maybe its because of the way he goes about it and see’s it from different angles instead of demanding something or raging like a little kid that tries to hold his breath till he gets what he wants.

Keep holding your breath guys. Worst thing that will happen is you pass out.

A corporate shill. I’ll wait for Angry Joe or TotalBiscuit’s views instead, if they even make a video. They are less biased towards GW2.

Hahahahaaaaa… less biased is a nice way of putting, ‘not on the radar’. Angry Joe and TotalBiscuit only look GW2’s way when they’re lured in to free, press events. AJ hardly could pronounce the title of the expansion when he went to ANet for the press preview of HoT… the way they operate with quick “cash grab” reviews and move on when they can’t milk more out of it means I’ve absolutely no respect for their reviews.

A freebie to loyal customer is a freebie .
The fact that it was delivered for a subcription free game, a free game, a buy 2 play game doesn’t make it less of a freebie and doesn’t detract from the fact that regular customer feel rewarded for their loyalty and not discriminated against.
