"Special" Announcement is here!
I don’t want to be mean or rude, but… I’ll just hold my tongue. These changes look undesirable.
I also sincerely hope this is not the special announcement.
Here’s the “special” announcement:
https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/upgrading-world-vs-world-upgrades/In summary:
removed a bunch of WvW abilities
Simplified WvW so you no longer need to really participate or organize, everything is now automatic.
For a majority of the Zerg blog they won’t notice the difference, outside of maybe the max supply being less. For the defenders and the people that have spend tons of gold and time upgrading, it’ll be a wonderful QoL save. Not to mention having it stop being a gold sink for the same players (outside of the cost of siege). So I like the idea of things auto upgrading. It also helps to “fix” the problem of someone starting an upgrade while under attack, wasting valuable supply, but at the same time makes it harder for attackers to drain a keeps supply by taking the camps/killing the yaks. Plus the sentry changes will give roamers/defenders more to worry about and for us to get used to for the new borderland.
A little sad about the loss of Applied Fortitude and Applied Strength, and angry about the changes to Supply Capacity just because I just hit ~830 and was finally able to dump the 300 points to get my +5. At least I’ll get to put the points into other lines.

Well it’s either the WvW changes, or the announcement could refer to the new “Ready Up” version of “PvP 101”

You’ll still need to really participate and organize, they’re simply shifting the focus on supply usage not to be mandatory upgrade-wise, and allow for actual player strategy siege-wise. This also solves the problem of spies from other servers spending supplies on purpose to mess up upgrading objectives, while they still can steal from objectives it shouldn’t have such an effect it currently has.
By improving caravans/sentries mechanics it makes up for more interesting and undoubtedly REWARDING gameplay for those who enjoy escorting and defending small objectives (i.e. the dolyaks). When the game first launched people used to run dolyaks and it felt rewarding as it helped maintaining objectives resources, now you don’t feel equally useful for running them because blobs traverse the map and effectively scare away anyone trying to run gank them, specially thieves. On the other hand, thieves and other gankers will have a hard time because it was said that escorting dolyaks will increase its resistance, therefore opening up more interesting mechanics for those who like to defend.
As long as blobs no longer become the only way to effectively win matches, I’m looking forward for all changes related to WvW to give it a fresh air and more focus on holding objectives. Holding a point should really mean “I’ve claimed this ground and you will have to work strategically to beat us down!”.
Wow….what a way to be pessimistic.
- They didn’t remove “a bunch” of abilities. They only actually removed applied fortitude and applied strength
- Yes, upgrades are now automatic; however we still need to coordinate to defend and hold those objectives. It also now cost ZERO gold to do those upgrades, so maybe WvW players wont feel like their game mode is bleeding them dry anymore.
- With the automatic upgrades, supporting supply lines becomes more desirable as dolyaks speed the upgrades along.
I admit the announcement was mildly underwhelming for me, but I think the changes are good overall.

This changes seems to simplify WvW, ANet is really worried about new players so they changed PvP a while ago to simply it (no rune combination, no amulet combination, among other things), then they simplified the PvE with the NPE stuff, obviously WvW wouldn’t escape from that.
Also, I’m almost sure that is the special announcement.
EDIT: I’m not sure if the WvW will be better or worse, it just seems simplified imo.
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
How I see it is that they are discouraging play styles where blobs capture the point and move on without defending it or upgrading it. It also means those poor dolyaks wont be so ignored either.

There are a few good things, like the no gold cost, but it takes away important strategy and cooperation. It is also the final nail in the coffin of smaller servers. Any server who can’t fill all 4 maps overnight will be completely destroyed. They will now wake up to fully upgraded maxed out enemy defenses, with no hope of ever recapturing them.

I share your worry. What do you think about having objectives deplete upgrades over time, but at a more sinoidal rate? To go away with “why” we could suppose the walls are “deteriorating”.
O…waw. If you asked me yesterday about what they plan on improving in wvw i would have never come up with anything from that list. I like everything i see.
good job Anet…..GOOD JOB! there…you got a compliment from me. DON’T LET IT SPOIL YOU!
I feel this is positive:
1. I never liked spending gold to upgrade. I did it, but I didn’t like it.
2. We had a guy in our keep once who was angry because he was “left to die” by the zerg, started spending all the supply in the keep to build rams. Nothing we could do to stop him. Now, he can’t ruin our day like he did before.
3. I always felt Applied Strength and Fortitude were just too good; I’m glad to see it go.
4. There was often a conflict between people trying to upgrade and people taking supplies to fuel their sieges. This relieves that problem as well.
Gone will be the days where idiots derail a Keep upgrade by draining supply. Good riddance.

As a roamer, these changes just make me a bit concerned for my well-being and viability. On TC it’s already difficult enough roaming against JQ/BG all the time. Now roamers are going to have an even larger target over their head since dolyaks are about to become as sacred as a cow in India while being visited by a bunch of hungry American tourists.
gotta +1 the proposed changes.
That cost to upgrade was an irritating gold sink, and was a chore to remember to fire them off ( or waiting for supply to come in to do so).
It also increases the value of being a roamer because you have more purpose to roam a supply line and speed up those yaks.
Not to forget it could make it much more enjoyable for a small guild/group to decide to take up residence for an evening in an enemy tower/keep and see how long they could hold it.
All in all it seems like a very nice QoL change for WvW.

And here we have a great way of showing that people that complain about the lack of information actually only care about information that THEY are interested in.
This is big information, even if you personally don’t care about it.
In the OP it also seems rather clear that op don’t actually play WvW.

Similified WvW so it no longer requires what? You are delusional if you think WvW has ever required any semblance of organization.

Required is the wrong word.
I think something like " results can be/are vastly improved when there is organization" would be a better fit.

Translation: Doesn’t play WvW the way that all mighty LordKrall has declared it should be played
Either way I don’t see why this announcement displaced a specialization reveal. The WvW team clearly isn’t the same as the class mechanics team, so why didn’t we get a specialization reveal this week?
It didn’t displace a specialization reveal. The plan was always (or at least since the week of the Chronomancer reveal) to only have three weeks of Specialization in the first run with something else coming after that.

I wouldn’t take this out on the specialization team. Two reasons:
1) Revealing all the specs faster won’t actually make HoT come out any faster (not directly, at least. It could only be implied that HoT is further along if all the specs were finished, but let that segue into #2)
2) They said they weren’t ready to reveal the next one yet and that, as they become ready, they will announce them (presumably the next three before taking another break).
Either way I don’t see why this announcement displaced a specialization reveal. The WvW team clearly isn’t the same as the class mechanics team, so why didn’t we get a specialization reveal this week?
No, this didn’t “displace” a specialization. If you go back and read the blogs and articles from the chonomancer announcement, they specifically stated three reveals. Which implies they’d have a break for something else before doing more reveals, otherwise there would be no point in calling out that they were doing three.

The imaginary hype train keeps on rollin!

While it wasn’t on the forums, in any of Anet’s blog posts, or in any of the vids, I think it was Ten Ton Hammer’s post for the DH said that it was the “second of three planned specialization reveals.” Or something to that effect. So, people that saw it, and spread that info all kind of assumed that it was correct and we were only getting a group of three anyways.
As why they don’t do another spec, well they need to space them out.
1) They may not be in a place where they can be given a full show (remember the base engi still had a number of TBD traits ~1 month ago).
2) I think people would get bored after 8-9 weeks of just specialization reveals
3) They have other stuff that they want to reveal so it’s a good idea to break up one big topic with other ones to keep things feeling fresh.
Sure it sucks that we still don’t know the name/weapon/anything much about the remaining specs, but we’ll get that info at some point (and apparently be able to play with them in the coming betas). Everyone cares about different specs too. If the Tempest ends up using a sword, I couldn’t give a pack bull about it, really. And unless the warrior spec gets Taunt I don’t really care about it either.
Also, this may be something that can go into the game “now”. Which we desperately need. Considering the only updates we could assume that were coming before HoT were various “feature pack” stuff (trait changes in another 1-3 months, personal story reworks, ???) it’s nice that we’re getting something. Sure, it’s just WvW QoL stuff, but I’ll take what I can get.
This also make my hope that they will release the new WvW borderlands and Stronghold “when they are ready” instead of waiting for HoT closer to reality.

Sounds like they are implementing features in WvW, i.e. automatic upgrades after a Dolyak arrives, they have tested before in the silverwastes map.
2. We had a guy in our keep once who was angry because he was “left to die” by the zerg, started spending all the supply in the keep to build rams. Nothing we could do to stop him. Now, he can’t ruin our day like he did before.
At first I thought they were removing supply entirely, and I got confused as to why there would still be a Supply Master line. But they’re just taking away the need for supply to upgrade fortifications. So as I understand it the supply will still be needed to build siege. Thus someone could still waste it on building siege in ridiculously useless locations. Right?

Correct, but it shouldn’t be as harmful as it currently is.
tbh i’m really disappointed, really really. i don’t play wvw and i dont care about the stuff that they announced today either, i won’t say that they shouldn’t tell us, because there are people that enjoy WvW but all this is, is a “small text” about some cost changes and upgrade changes with tons of unnecessary phrases to get a big enough blog.
and there i was expecting revenant part 2, but hey it’s anet after all.
I understand the logic behind removing Applied Fortitude and Applied Strength but I’m not so sure that’s a good idea. One of the main reasons to clear out guards/sents and such was to get the stacks. Having that extra HP and Power was nice too, especially if you played the min/max game.
Why not just reduce the cost in getting them rather than removing them altogether?

Just like how you don’t care about this people that only play WvW don’t care about new maps or masteries or lore.
Not every piece of information will be for everyone.
It is not a small thing. The changes are very big for WvW.

This is a bad change for people that think ‘coordination and strategy’ is dualboxing so you can waste supply for another server.

They could have also added that buff on level 6 and each level after that adds one stack.
So people wouldn’t be forced to max it.
because a forced ability is still a forced ability, whatever level it’s at.
This is big for WvW and people who liked playing defense.
I think it still might unintentionally hurt smaller pop WvW servers, but we won’t know for sure until it goes live.
All in all though as a defender historically and a current roamer when i have time, this has some great potential.

Required is the wrong word.
I think something like " results can be/are vastly improved when there is organization" would be a better fit.
I wouldn’t say that at all. WvW’s ‘organization’ is stacking as many people as possible and staying that way. And even calling stacking organization is like saying cleaning your room by shoving everything in the closet and propping the door shut is a legitimate organizational plan. It doesn’t matter where any individual item is in the room, just that all of it is out of the way.
Similarly, it doesn’t actually matter where each, or even any player is in WvW, just that all of them are in as tight of grouping as possible to take advantage of the AoE limit, spread out any single targeting between as many clipping bodies as possible, allow for rapid fire revive spamming, and fit as many people in the constant stream of AoE support as possible. Pretty much every combat system in the game supports this one overly simple organizational strategy to the point no amount of strategy or alternative organization methods will ever have an advantage over it.
Seriously? This is the special announcement? Well . . . okay. . . .
Seriously? This is the special announcement? Well . . . okay. . . .
They never mentioned any special announcement.
They mentioned that there would be something extra cool. Which both the Lion’s Arch rebuild and the WvW changes could be seen as.
The only people that have mentioned special announcements are the ones that have hyped it up for themselves and others. ArenaNet on the other hand have never said it.

I for one don’t WvW much, but I definitely don’t belittle such changes. It’ll have a great effect on overall WvW experience.
Ah you guys… facepalm.
Its obvious that the special announcment ruby has hinted is the rebuild of Lions arch, and YES, it si kinda special.
If for you guys, bringing back the main city HUB to its former glory is not special, okay, but for a lot of people that actually play the game rather than whine on forums its a very cool information.
The information on changes at wxw upgrades are just a plus on the incoming expansion, not my taste, but I am happy that they used this week for it.
I will see… Don’t mind the wvw changes. It will make it a bit easier on the abilities and I’ll run 15-20 supplies now.
Been There, Done That & Will do it again…except maybe world completion.
because a forced ability is still a forced ability, whatever level it’s at.
Uhm what?
It’s not forced, you can spend points on whatever lines you want. You know beforehand how many points, and what each “tier” gives you. Your choice to spend it or not.
Where did they promise a special announcement? Not doubting it but I missed that. Was it on Points of Interest?
Don’t forget that with the new borderland map, they try to force pvp out of wvw and transform it in a farm map, like eotm and the mini maps from the ls. I remember that when the devs went into wvw for the event, all of them were total noobs that never played it and many didn’t even have a lvl 80 character. They try to apply their bad design of meta event everywhere, from the next dlc to the new wvw borderland to the new spvp map. One bad design to rule them all, all parts of the game will be the same.
Rubi stated they need the whole live-stream to reveal this ‘extra cool’ announcement. I don’t know if Lion’s Arch being updated would take a whole Ready-Up, so I guess it’s the WvW revamp. I guess that’s ‘extra cool’.

They didn’t.
People are just hyping up and putting words in ArenaNets mouth. As always.

I’m wondering if I see the time in this game when at last things will be done, explained and se in stone for actual gameplay instead of constant changing old content and reinventing the wheel all the time and instead we’ll get some substantial content to play.
And no, I don’t think we will get much to do with HoT maps. It will be more like LS + feature pack sold in a box.
