My problem with focusing on one attunement is, how would this playstyle be different? Zephyrite wouldn’t be a bad idea because then the class could focus more on mobility and positioning. I guess one element could instead focus on bursting, but a zerker ele is already very squishy, especially in pve alone.

Other than water and arcane,other trait lines lack sustain due to the fact that we had 4 elements to fall back on,reason why ele is a celestial class. With only 1 element we should find better sustain through the new traits and utilities. I’m really hoping they lock all previous skills and traits so it can balanced please do so. The balance here is shaking because we can’t control what each spec has.

I suppose you’re right Sagat, those are heavily relied upon traits, and they could use some mixing up. I guess I can get behind a single attunement specialization.

I’m definitely more interested in what the specializations will address for each class. Necros are so weak in PVE, that I’m sure the greatsword will bring PVE viability. Druids having staff is what, perhaps AOE? I’m more interested in what weaknesses they may address.

Necros? Weak in pve? what the game are you playing? the only thing necros are lacking is true melee cleave, dagger is nice. and it’s somewhat lacking on the immobilizes and cripple.

I’m thinking both pve and pvp but I share the same need that they should fill weaknessess at least the first ones, that’s why I don’t believe in LB support guard. Druid is either AoE condi+CC or AoE boons+CC or both.

Also I don’t think I’ve actually mentioned this in forums yet. Warrior specialization: Mossman, it has everything warriors are lacking: blink, teleport, summon wolves, but not transformation, that mossman was specifically a norn I guess.
As for engi, and on a serious note, I get the feeling that the hammer engi won’t so much specialize in technology. That or you’re right.

I’d like to see elementalist get dual pistols and maybe dual swords I’d like engineers to get an alchemist spec and have a lot better on the alchemy side of things. I mean I personally like the academical side of the engineer always thought they should have put more kits in for them. Or at least upgrade the bombs and grenade in some way with alchemy maybe they will add a different weapon to the game as well. who knows spears for warriors or guardian would be cool. I can see guardians as paragons. Rangers as druids sounds cool. could also see sniper going to them. thief gaining rifle and better traps maybe. mesmer chronomancer or maybe bard of some sort. necromancer demon tamer could be fun. but those are just a few ideas

I’m hoping it’ll improve the ranger’s active support, I love playing support, but the more I play my Zerker Ele the more I feel like Healer’s Celerity/Mercy resbot isn’t the most successfully active support I can be. AoE condi has axe/torch and traps, AoE boons? Ranger has a lot of passive support, but not so much that can provide the “saved you” feeling I crave. (Brown Bear, F2 heal trait maybe, resbot, search and rescue if I wasn’t terrified of using it and Longbow’s CC.

Hopefully the mechanic changes solve the pet screwing you over by deciding to stand in AoE (the “leash” range on avoid combat and F3 is FAR too long). I doubt they’ll completely remove animal companions as that defines the ranger as a profession and I certainly don’t want them to, but pet controls are sometimes very iffy. Assuming direct control with F1 and F2 being pet active attacks and F3 repositioning, at the cost of pet auto-attacks seems like it may have promise.

I haven’t the faintest idea what Anet will call the specializations or what their associated weapon will be, other than the ones already hinted at, but here are some ideas:

Ranger = Druid – Staff
Engineer = Machinist – Hammer
Necromancer = Reaper – Greatsword
Mesmer = Chronomancer – Pistol (main hand) + Shield
Elementalist = Sonic Mage (didn’t know what else to call it) – Mace + Warhorn
Guardian = Avenger- Longbow
Warrior = Sentinal – Staff (as a melee weapon)
Thief = Enforcer – Rifle
Revenant = Ritualist – ???

Simplicity is complex.

Good feedback is key to getting the developers to listen to you.

Fighter → warrior → berserker/paladin → warlord/templar → deathknight/crusader

Hunter → archer → ranger/assassin → sharpshooter/darkstalker → hawkeye/windshadow

Spellcaster → mage → wizard/necromancer → archmage/demonologist → avatar/shadowlord

Guardian → Zealot/Avenger – Gets longbow

Thief → Assassin – Gets rifle

Ranger → Druid – gets staff (of course)

Engineer → Demolitionist -gets Hammer

Mesmer → Chronomancer – gets Shield

Necromancer → Executioner – gets Greatsword

And my personal favorite:

Revenant → Wraith – gets Dagger usage

Mesmer: Chronomancer, taught by Mist-Traveling Mursaat
Ranger: Druid, taught by… druids?
Necromancer: Reaper[or whatever], taught by Marjory?
Engineer: Rocketeer, scavenged flying bits of the crashed Pact Airships.
Thief: Guerrilla/Assassin, taught by frog people.
Elementalist: Zephyrite, taught by Zephyrites[specialize in air magic]
Guardian: Zealot? No good idea on this one, but might make sense to have a defensive/support class specialize into offense/control. Given the jungle setting, it might be a more fire-based gameplay.
Warrior: Again, no idea, no hints. Warrior’s extremely well rounded, but I discussed an idea that Adrenaline could instead turn into a strategic buff, such as different levels of quickness or speed or attack bonus when used, and it would drain slowly like Death Shroud. This would emphasize less on the warrior’s weapon prowess and more on their physical mastery.

silverlily, I watched all of bleach. I don’t think there’s something I regret more than that. So I hope you’re wrong. Also, I had believed that in the trailer, that in the pvp scene a light class was using a bow(I’ve now determined it was medium radiant armor), that that was an ele. However, in that same thread it was pointed out, the ice bow eles have really does cover all the elements the bow has.

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but with specializations I’m having a hard time thinking that the Mesmer (and possibly other specializations) will only get an off-hand. There’s two reasons for this.
For one, with the Engi special getting hammers and Druids getting staffs – that’s some classes getting 5 new weapon skills and another only getting 2. While I get that not everything has to be totally even handed, that’s a reasonably large disparity.
For two, as it stands the mesmer has two main hands, and FOUR off-hands. Increasing that to two main hands and FIVE off-hands feels like a big disparity as well.
(Yes yes this is all speculation, and I’m aware that with the very little we know, it’s entirely possible that specialization-mechanics might change things up quite a lot, but as one disparity on top of another, it feels a touch…off)

Hrrrmn. Necromancer greatsword does now make me think ‘executioner’ – explains why they don’t get the lighter 1-hand sword.

And, to be honest, Wox’s concern is one I share myself. Mesmers already have a problem that they have a lot of offhands but only two mainhand weapons, both of which are fairly specialised for a light armour class profession – which means all those offhands go to waste if you’re not planning to melee and the scepter doesn’t fit your build (which could be because it potentially overrides the third phantasm with a close through its attack chain, or because it’s a weapon focused on Torment and Confusion which generally aren’t the best things to focus on in PvE).

Necro greatsword does hint at a more eye-of-the-storm type necro, so I’d imagine maybe some mass-bleeds and perhaps a blood-is-power type risk/reward move (with increasing returns on number of enemies hit). Although the Mesmer greatsword did show that they can do less obvious things with weapons.

I would guess the Mesmer special might also get a main dagger (I don’t think there’s currently any class that can ONLY main a dagger), or a mace (basically cause it’d be interesting and it’s currently only used by 2 classes). But yeah drxynnic you do echo something fairly important.

Marjory’s been shown fighting in melee with the greatsword, so I suspect that’s the plan for the necromancer specialisation.

I don’t think Greatsword Necro will be ‘executioner’ since a Necro does the opposite of of executing things; a Necro raises the dead. Unless you guys think the theme of the specialisation takes the opposite approach? :P

Necromancers gain power from death in general, including taking life. It may not be a mechanical requirement in GW2, but thematically speaking something has to die before you can make undead or other necrominions – GW2 simply has an assumption that the necromancer always has something handy, whether it’s that there is something buried nearby or that the necromancer carries a certain amount of raw materials with them.

Execution, followed by supping on the tasty tasty life force, fits the necromancer to a T. They may then choose to animate the remains (waste not, want not, after all!). These behaviours are complimentary rather than being in opposition.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

Has anything leaked regarding all classes getting 5 new weapon skills ( as in a MH and OH or 2 handed)? How about whether or not we have to use the new weapon with the specialization? How does that look with weapon swap.

It would be cool to have traits swap when weapons swap. Maybe make some more room for creativity in builds? Maybe that’s too much. What do you guys think?

Right now I’m setting the bar pretty low so as to avoid dissapointed. I’m fully expecting some classes to get new awesome 2 handed weapons (Necro with GS!) aand other classes to get really weak off handed weapons (offhand torch warrior)

I think a necro who channels evil spirits or demons and they protect him, get some reflects and re gen type skills. Maybe call it a ritualist or Demoner (think deviner antonym)

I think that’d be an entirely new system 100% unrelated to specialization and a lot of work just to let a few players be more powerful while confusing the heck out of the rest of the players. People already have enough trouble with slotting utilities for their underwater mode.

I quietly pray a little bit every night for Elementalist to get a Sword with Melee and Arcane based skills.

Spellblade, go!

I don’t think they’d get Greatsword, Shortbow, Axe or Hammer because they can already get them after a fashion with summon weapons.

And what could be made different about a Longbow from a Staff, in all honesty?

A sword still has a vastly different ‘melee’ playstyle to daggers, and even daggers with elementalists are not -really- ‘melee’.

It’s great that we’re getting a new weapon(s), but I’m not too fond of the name changes that seems to come with them or the overall need to “specialize” in the first place. Is the default names of the professions that bad? Bad enough to rename the profession by adding in a new weapon?

The name change indicates something more than just a new weapon. It’s also a change in mechanics that we don’t fully know about. There’ll be new skills, new traits. Not sure what else, but we’ll know more after the deep dive.

Or it would be if that were true, since the specialization will also have a new elite skill, new utility skills, possibly a new heal skill and oh yeah, a whole new set of traits.

New weapons are NOT the most important thing about the specializations. Not by a long shot.

Wanted to do a little theorycrafting to try to figure out what a class could get and what it’s name could become!

Ranger gets staff -> Druid

This is confirmed

Engineer gets hammer -> ???

I think a cool name would be called Juggernaut…maybe Berserker, or a blacksmithy type name since the attacks did have a fire animation.

Mesmer gets shield -> ???

When she casts the ability in the trailer, a clock pops up in the animation, Chronomancer maybe?

Necro gets greatsword -> ???

A spirit mage of some sorts. Can’t really think of a name.

Warrior gets ? -> ?

A Warrior doesn’t have: Shortbow, Focus, Torch, Pistol, Dagger, Staff, Scepter

Guardian gets ? -> ?

A Guardian doesn’t have: Longbow, Shortbow, Rifle, Pistol, Dagger, Warhorn, Axe

Elementalist gets ? -> ?

Elementalist does not have: Hammer, Sword, Rifle, Pistol, Warhorn, Greatsword, Mace, Shield, Axe, Longbow, Shortbow, Torch

It would be nice to get another melee option for the Elementalist, i feel like the conjure spells would make greatsword, bow, shield, and hammer not possible. Dual axes could be sweet! An Enchantress of sorts.

Thief gets ? -> ?

Thief does not have: Greatsword, Axe, Rifle, Warhorn, Mace, Scepter, Longbow, Shield, Hammer, Focus, Staff, Torch

There is a medium wearing character in the trailer holding a rifle, so maybe it was a Thief and it could be a Sniper/Marksman type specialization.

If I missed any weapons, my apologies, lmk and I will update the topic.

I think the better weapon for elementalist is dual pistol, dual Sword or Greatsword.
