Q:
Specializations: In PvE only?
It hasn’t been said explicitly, however heavily implied that this is a feature of the classes, not of a particular game mode. I cannot see them making this PvE only, why would they? If they did, there would be riots and mass rage.
i bet money that specializations will be in sPvP.

For the sake of balance and if they do it right they must.

If they add it to pvp its like forcing you to either buy it or give up on pvp

Why? I assume everything is going to be balanced even beyond release? All specializations do is add some depth to a class, they do not overpower that class. Sure there will be pains in the early days while people learn to counter the new specs and class, but it will even out.
It is no different then facing a tanking warrior rather than a support warrior. You just play against him differently.

Then different queues for them,if they are implemented right aka with a specific kitten nal there will be a soft balance that is not at normal profession level. Their balance patches are not frequent enough and are usually unsatisfying and the number of variation doesn’t help.
It’s good business move for them competitive players will want to buy it for balance without losing their preferred playstyle, just 1 for now but 5 would take them far and beyond. Sure it’s like leaving the others professions out but I expect balance patches to still happen.

I believe a recent interview confirmed the new masteries are PvE only but I haven’t read anything saying specializations would be PvE only. My guess is that they would be allowed in WvW, but not in structured PvP where you can’t assume every player has bought the expansion.

my guess is that you can totally play against a specialization, but not as one until you buy the expansion.
Evolve is doing something similar with its monsters/hunters DLCs.
seriously, the mere notion that PvP would be permanently stagnated because you can’t add anything that isn’t in the core release to it is preposterous. are revenants going to be banned from sPvP as well because you can’t tell if everyone bought the expansion?

Again, my guess would be that the revenant would also be excluded from sPvP. competitive PvP in GW2 has continued to be groomed as an esport. How can you justify one team having a competitive advantage over another on the basis of a purchased expansion?
Why do people constantly assume that what the specializations- even the Revanant- will bring anything so incredibly more powerful to the table that it’s obviously unfair?
GW2 is HORIZONTAL progression. I’m betting 2/3 of the new specializations will not even be used by most people except the novelty of testing out the new weapon for their class.

lolno.
if they decide that everything tied to expansions and future releases is removed from PvP, then that’s when PvP will die for good.
but since you need something more concrete than “they’re not stupid”, in GW1 you could totally play against assassins and ritualists without having purchased guild wars factions, the expansion that unlocked those professions.
plus, if they’re doing their job right, having a revenant will not be a competitive advantage, because things will be balanced
If the Revenant (and specialisations) are going to be restricted only to players who have purchased HoT, then ANet will need to balance stuff very carefully. Back in GW1, it was more or less essential for top PvP players to own all 3 campaigns + the expansion, for the simple fact that some restricted skills, which were considered crucial to top-tier builds, were only available in some campaigns. If we’re not careful, things like restricted skills and power creep might mean that players who only have the base GW2 game will be at a disadvantage compared to players that have all the expansions.

Not sure why they would do this either however! That being said, It would be an excellent option because that would mean that after the expansion launched those of us in PVE land wouldn’t have to worry about skill nerfs or complete trait disappearances because of PVP “balance” patches.
Snip
^This. It’d be ridiculous to not have the specializations available in every game mode. If they were only usable in PvE, my hype train would crash and burn.
Well, I definitely see them allowing Revenant into sPvP…Would be no reason not to. The question I was hoping to get answered by a dev on whether the specializations will be in there. Yes there will be balance still with them (6 months after release?) but it will be chaotic. They release small balance changes and sometimes make something super OP or way under powered. They then have to fix that.
You are talking about 8 new specializations + Revenant + Rev specialization. Each of these has a whole entire new set of traits and skills. Pretty close to full blown classes. In that aspect they will be adding 10! new complete sets of traits & skills. To think it will be even close to balanced on launch is laughable. Balance is not the issue, we know it will be jacked and take a while to fix. Everyone is going to have to get used to a MEGA TON of new skills and animations to counter.
I think it will be fun and fresh for PvP. I am just wondering if it will be allowed in there too, and would be awesome IMO.
I am buying the expansion no matter what. I just think if they want to help PvP out, they will add more than just a new game mode and specializations will do just that.
People seem to be missing one more point. Anet officially have mentioned that specializations and other systems in the expansion aren’t only new but also to be considered fundamental for further developement.
Which means that classes will eventually get more specializations and the expansion content will surely gets its’ own package of updates. What does this mean? Well, that people with no expansion may actually miss out, not only on the expansion itself, but most of the future updates as they will surely be centered around the new content for further developement of their systems. Not saying that all updates will go to the expansion however if what Cloin and Make is true and they are going to build on these fundamental features, there is a big chance people with no expansion will not get these updates as they don’t have the features in the first place.
What does this mean? Well, that people with no expansion may actually miss out,
or, that the specialization system will be added to the core and will be available also to those that didn’t purchase expansion. We already know that some things from HoT will be like that.
I mean, any changes considered to be fundamental simply cannot be restricted that way, because they would require running different mechanics for the same thing for expansion and core only players. Which is dumb.
Remember, remember, 15th of November

or, you know, they can be sensible, and lock this particular set of specializations/masteries/new professions/whatever to people who buy HoT, and people who get whatever LS chapter or expansion that releases new specializations/masteries/new professions/whatever will have access to those, but not the HoT set.
