Creating this topic because, its a topic I’ve been grappling with for a while and, with the announcement of specializations, its got me thinking.

Would there be a benefit to creating two characters of the same class, especially now that we have specializations coming in? To explain – I currently have 8 level 80 characters, but I have been getting more and more tomes of knowledge that I just feel like saving up on the off-chance that I may want to create a new level 80 character (or even more) On top of that, and while I’m happy with, say, my current male norn ele and male human mesmer design, I have grappled with wanting to make a female sylvari mesmer, or a human female thief (and the game, in a way, supports 128 individual glass/gender/race combinations, which will increase with the revenant class). And I think having a reason to make another character of the same class, as opposed to deleting them because I get tired of their current design, would make sense.

So I am wondering: will specializations benefit players who make more than one character of a similar class? I can see the benefit of it: a ‘druid’ ranger can be more like a scholar type profession, especially with the staff. Alternatively, I can have a similar ranger that has a specializations in a more refined ranged weapon, like rifle.

But, and after discussion with some fellow players, I came across an opinion that stated that making such specializations character-specific might end up relying too many characters and/or be too costly. And one of the benefits of having easily switchable traits (and, for them, specializations) would be the ability to switch any role required of the profession if need be.

So, I would like some discussion on this topic. If specializations were to mean a more specialized character in a specific manner, would it be more beneficial to create more characters of the same class? And, would it be too costly? Because, I feel that having more than 8 characters in the games current state is redundant, but, I don’t know if it would be worth having 16 characters, where two of them are a specialization of one specific class.

You mean Specializations. Masteries is a different mechanic that isn’t class-specific, Specializations is the one that lets you turn your Ranger into a Druid.
