Speculation on elementalists new weapon
its a sword, they already datamined the skills
The data mined skills say chop and slash. Bets on axe or sword.

This is definitely a melee weapon. Data mined placeholder skill names fit axe or sword. I think it will be sword. Axe is too “barbaric” for eles imo.

Melee longbow. Oh wait, ranger already has that.
ANet may give it to you.
Elementalists are getting sword. And I for one am not happy about it. To me, elementalists should blast their enemies from afar, not be up-close in combat. To me, that’s more like guardian or warrior sort of playstyle.
I would have liked to have seen greatsword or longbow for ele, but that’s not going to happen, so I just won’t use the ele specialisation, that’s all.

Argghh! Man I hate people who say this crap! Elite specs so far change the core profession and take it on a slight diff path then they stereotyped to be. Swords are fine. Battle wizard style would be really cool!

Gandalf inc.
Also still the skills say chop so may still be an axe instead of sword.
They could have used placeholder skills just to see how they react with tempest profession mechanics. So they could, for instance, borrow some monster skills just to test, but in reality those slashes/chops could not even translate into what tempest skills will be.

I really hope it is a sword, I am waiting to have a sword mage ever since the start of the game, and I even started to make the bolt already.
So please, for the god sake – Let elementalist get MH sword —
Inb4 ele gets underwater weapon as specialization weapon.

I know it is probably swords, but i would love to see a pistol ele or one with mantras of some sort. I don’t know a spell slingers sounds neat.

Eek! Eles are light armor and are glass cannons. There is a good reason everyone keeps them far from the battle when they can. It is also why myself and a friend cover our elementals in anything that will give a speed boost.
Make them at least a medium armor and I would think about a melee weapon. If not …
People seem to think sword.
The “datamined” skills were mostly skills from already existing weaponsets for Ele, namely Daggers.
If we follow the theory that every specializations adds a new weapon that is not available to the profession, but also not new to another specialization, we’re left with the following:
(Longbow already goes to Guardian, Engineer gets Hammer, Mesmer gets Shield, Necro gets Greatsword. Staff, Dagger, Focus, Scepter already available to Elementalist.)
-Rifle (more likely to go to Thief to fill their lack of 900+ range options)
-Axe
-Sword
-Shortbow
-Pistol
-Mace
-Torch
-Warhorn
I’d put my money on Sword as well. But nothing is certain yet, the few datamined skills could also be for some NPC who do get unique skills sometimes. So don’t get all upset when you got your heart set on Sword and you end up getting a Warhorn.

You do realize d/d cele is melee and is currently the most overpowered build in the entire game, right?

You have staff, scepter and focus already. Would you prefer sniper rifle to be further away?
Besides we have no idea if sword will be all melee, or how it synergizes with off-hands.

I would need to look equip d/d to find out why I did not care for it but I preferred staff.

Me?
Melee longbow. Oh wait, ranger already has that.
mmmm…. salty.
More to the point. It’s probably going to be sword, as it goes pretty well with Ele and the theme of “Tempest” (which, to me, implies speed and precision)

Tempest – a violent windy storm
Ok, I can maybe see the speed….. but how does violent and windy imply precision? ‘Violent’ and ‘windy’ don’t exactly scream ‘accuracy’ to me.

A better example would be Elric of Melnibone.

Air magic = precision. Specifically, the lightning aspects of storms.

Actually, sword mages are pretty commom in fantasy, and one of the very strong archetype of mage warriors.

Oh the attribute tied to it…. not for much longer.
I couldn’t imagine elementalist a light armor user with such a low health, as a close range class, daggers I think is as close as it could get. So if it is indeed sword I just hope skills will have some range…

There is nothing wrong with being in melee with light armor and low health, that is what your 20 weapon skills and traits are for. If the Tempest has pure melee cleave as what it offers, so long as the burst/mobility is there, it won’t make a difference. Thieves have it the same, while not as bad, and do just fine because their burst is meaningful and have a plethora of escapes.

They give things what not fit in the actual stereotypes or change the playstyle. So i bet 2 silvers on axe

Aaaand why not warhorn?
Maybe shaman-like, more tribal since we are, you know, in the middle of the forest. There is to be said that so far no elite specialization was bound to maguuma in any way yet, but that can be a case ( like druids and dragontards are, i think ).
i would like the 1h sword to be confirmed so i can finaly stick bolt on my ele swag and all.
Ele with fiery dragon sword? Yes please.

The armor isn’t what dictates whether a class can stand in melee or not. Generally, the light armored melee classes just have more tools to survive.
Mesmers are baseline only slightly more durable than elementalists, using the same armor and the medium health pool, but they survive in melee through blocks (If using a sword off hand), stealth (Torch/Decoy), crowd control, and evade/invulnerability uptime.
The reaper uses light armor, but will survive through death shroud turning into an actual second health bar with the ability to heal your first through it, and life force generation.
Elementalists already have a number of evades or invulnerability skills on their current weapons to keep themselves alive, as well as a ton of healing, regeneration uptime and, most importantly, close to perfect protection uptime. Presumably their melee weapon would provide them with even more survival tools.
Also, if you’re already using soldier stats and still feel that they’re glass cannons, there’s always the possibility of using a more survivable stat combination. Berserker fire/air elementalists are glass cannons, celestial water/arcane is nowhere near that.
Elementalists are getting sword. And I for one am not happy about it. To me, elementalists should blast their enemies from afar, not be up-close in combat. To me, that’s more like guardian or warrior sort of playstyle.
That’s kind of the point. The specialisations are adding new playstyles. There’s already the staff for the sit back and maintain maximum range style of play. The daggers are close range, but they’re not true melee weapons, with most attunements actually being quite mid range, and only the air attunement autoattack being actually melee like (i.e. 130 range, effective cleave).
The classes are supposed to have multiple different playstyles, not enforce you to a singular vision of how the class should work.
