Q:
Still nerfed if I don't buy HoT?
They can’t really have two different trait/skill systems existing at the same time. So yes, even if you don’t buy HoT you will still get the new trait/skill system.
In fact, we will get the new system BEFORE HoT is released.

Yes, like Lordkrall said,
They said that last night they would be pushing the new trait system before HoT which works out great, as if the classes I play the most are completely destroyed, I wil not be buying HoT and I will move onto a new game, it looks really restrictive and set up in such a way that if a build becomes to powerful the can hammer it instantly.
But I will wait until the traits update ingame before deciding my future in Guild Wars 2.
Sadly I know several people whom have already stated they are done now and have quit the game, and with some newer MMO’s etc coming out this year, its make or break time for Anet.
I was STUNNED you have to run YET again threw old content to get mastery points ( old skill challenges ) 2 1/2 years and they still want us to recycle old content, this is not the same team whom made GW1.

Except that you don’t.
If you have already done them before the system goes live they will be given retroactively. So if you have done 65 skill challenges (and are lvl 80) before the update you will have enough HPs to unlock everything of the core specializations.

For a main yes, but it sux for peeps like me who have a ton of other chars sat at under 10% map completion who are used heavily but only in wvw and pvp (not that the latter is affected). It’s kinda bs force feeding us 2 year old content before we can do what we enjoy… But hey ho it’s a few hours I can endure that but having to put up with necro and it’s useless traits still around and the only good ones now in the same spots? No ty

But do you actually NEED every single trait/skill in the whole game? Most people having one or two builds, not four or five.
The HPs you get for simply being lvl 80 will be enough for multiple different builds.

Buildcrafting is my favourite part of the game, I have 3 sets of armour on most chars so yes, I need most of the traits. But yea I’m hoping lvl 80 gives a decent amount of unlocks.
At least we will be able to experience what I believe to be horrible changes (or lack thereof) to necros before laying down a dime. If the shaft given to necros is as bad as I think, at least I didn’t spend money to experience it.
Ah well. GW2 was fun while it lasted.

It that account wide, then? I have 14 level 80s. 2 of them have done world completion. What about the other 12?

Why would it be account wide? The current system is not.
Do those other 12 actually use every single trait available in the game right now?

They were all 80 before the trait system redesign. Thus, they have all traits except maybe for a few of the newer XIII ones.
Edit: except for my NPE elementalist, that is. That one has enough traits unlocked to run a few builds, but nowhere near all of them.

You’re not accounting for the linear skill and trait unlock process, though. If the skills you want are high on the reward track (where the most useful/exciting ones are likely to be placed), you will have to advance the tracks through the skills you don’t want to use to get to them.
reminder: a level 80 character will have 400 hero points. to unlock ALL (core) traits will cost 300 points (60 points x 5 core specialization (trait) lines). to unlock all skills will cost 165 points.
i don’t know about you, but when i level a character to 80, i complete at least 1 or 2 full zones for at least 20 skill points, and i tend to grab more skill points as i’m running through zones just to get to Arah. i think people are blowing this a little out of proportion, considering how many skill points you complete in a normal level up process.
and yes, i am also considering the fact that many people auto level their toons with Tomes of Knowledge from PvP reward tracks. those same people also probably have plenty of skill point scrolls laying around, too, since you earn at least twice as many skill point scrolls per track than tomes of knowledge.
Its good we get to see the trait changes before we have to choose wether to buy HoT or not.
Before those trait changes / specialization information was announced I was 100% buying HoT, now I am not sure.
If those changes mean my 8×80th lvl have to all re-run old content to max out there traits once again, ie…repeat what I have done, then its time to get off the GW2 train. Especially, if it looks like the end result is going to be less choice, less diversity, less builds and forced to take traits you don’t even want.
7 out of 8 of those characters were levelled in WvW, so have little to no map completion.
I don’t want to continue to play GW2 or buy HoT if it means I will only have 1 complete character with everything unlocked.
I have no problem at all with playing NEW content to unlock NEW skills/abilities like masteries/specializations but I not swallowing any B*LLS*IT that forces me to repeat/recycle old content just to get back where I was before. Prefer to walk away, then that.
